I don't know... I still think a page rate would be better. As a flat rate, you're basically being paid $X amount for 24 pages, and any more than that (up to 36) are free. Would you really do a third of your story free of charge? :/ The sad thing is I think a lot of people trying to break into the field WOULD do that, because it's a chance to get noticed... so it just seems like they're taking advantage of that desire a little.

Though I as still confused, when submitting a pilot can one do a 3 book series submission or can it only be 1 book? I mean if the pilot is good to go why not allow the 3 book thing?
This I can definitely answer: you let them know what the intended full story length would be (I've talked to them about what would be 2 volume and 3 volume series). So I assume 1-3 volume proposals are fine. Hopefully this new pilot program will keep series from being stopped prematurely, like a number of works were (Divalicious, Sea Princess Azuri).

In that case, the 1-3 book thing still makes sense though it would be good if they clearly stated that in the FAQ.

I guess it would depend on the flat rate? After all, 24 pages is about the average chapter and these pilots are getting paid for something that may or may not see print, there for no money back.

granted, I charge about 45$ per page on my own (for personal commissions only, not commercial), so it would be base on all personal situations and how fast you can do pages?

Default One person's opinion about the TokyoPop Pilot Program contract

Long time lurker, first time poster here. My cartoonist friend just forwarded me a blog link where the TokyoPop Pilot Program contract is broken down and explained. It's an interesting read if you're considering signing on thru the Pilot Program so I thought I'd share it here.

Default About that Pilot program...

Please read this, if you're considering sending TP some of your material. I think you may be interested in this.
I mean, seriously. I respected TP back years ago, you put out some great stuff, but you've seriously gone downhill and landed in a pile of **** since then.

Oh well, if someone wants to submit or not, it's up to them. No article is going to persuade me otherwise, especially from THAT website.

I don't know what the contract is, but don't most publishers of manga or regular novels kinda have a flat fee for first timers on their first published work? The sales of that first book would determine what kind of contract you get for a second one, no? I would think it is out of the norm for a first time author to get some fantastic deal.

They don't normally make you surrender your moral rights.

And I dunno about over there, but in thsi country it's usually a flat fee, but then it gets turned into royalties ocne said fee's paid off. At least with books.
