Why are titles being converted from matte to glossy? Glossy does cost more but seems way way cheaper. The manga corners tend to curl and fray after constant and repeated reading.
Matte seems more luxiorious and feels really neat to the touch. Also the manga last longer.
Why do you choose to put out titles in glossy other than matte?

It's just based on what we feel will look better. Though if a series switches in the middle, that's usually a mistake...

In my opinion the matte looks WAY better than the glossy. Just because most of your readers would rather read manga than an novel doesn't mean they can be distracted by something shiney...
Also the fact that my matte manga don't have the curling corners makes them look better...

Um... where did you hear that matte was cheaper than uv (glossy?) In a lot of cases, that's not right.

Heh.... are they all glossy? I could have sworn some of my Kare Kano weren't?
Mmm well Neck and Neck vol. 1&2 are matte with glossy for the title and character that's on the cover. But 3&4 are all gloss. It happened with Snow Drop too... from vol. 1-8 it was matte but then it went glossy for the rest.
So is matte more expensive?

It varies. Plus, there are all kinds of coatings. Certain kinds are prone to curling in humid climes, while more expensive ones will stay flat, no matter what the humidity or temperature. Some kinds of matte are prone to scratching, especially if it's a darker cover.
Personally, I prefer a semi-matte because it makes it easier to see the cover in the store, generally doesn't pick up fingerprints, and feels nice to the touch, but gloss tends to make colors appear brighter and is actually easier to keep clean.
They type of cover stock (paper) can also effect the coating used as well.

*raises hand* Actually, I'm easily distracted by shiny things.
But that's not the point.
I really love matte covers too. They just feel so...well, yummy doesn't fit, but that's as close as I can think of right now. They're so lovely to the touch. Am I the only one who pets them when they get a new matte-covered manga? ^_^;;

Matte is generally more expensive than a full gloss cover. A spot gloss (where only parts of the cover are glossed) on matte, is even more expensive. Generally things with art that are cute or bright, look better on glossy stock, where as some other styles of art, as well as darker colors, tend to look better on a matte finish.
There are also many other types of finshes and treatments, but those are generally more intricate, and pricey.

That's my all time favorite. I think I bought Angelic Layer in a comic book shop just because it had the Matte Cover with spotgloss. I was looking for cool samples of book design to show off to people and was really impressed by the look and feel of it. I still keep it by my desk to show off to friends and co-workers :D
Generally I think Matte covers are way nicer looking than glossy, but I'm kind of a mild snob when it comes book production. But I don't think anyone would not buy a book because of the cover stock if they story/art was something they wanted to read.
Interior paperstock on the other hand... ;)

You have glossy paper in much different ways.. I prefer glossy/coated like DNAngel etc..why? coz the colors look more intense then using matte paper sometimes..also glossy paper doesnt have to be more expensive then matte that depends on grams wieght, special treatment etc also..
