The Pillows are amazing, known for the Fooly Cooly themes.
Also, FLOW is amazing. They did one of the Naruto openings, and the opening to Eureka Seven.

Agreed. I've only heard D-techno life (Bleach) and Colors of the Heart (Blood+), but those songs are really good.
You can also try Orange Range if you like J-Rock or Do As Infinity, Ayumi Hamasaki (either like or hate), dream, and day after tomorrow if you like J-Pop and such.

The Pillows are one I remember (end theme for FLCL) and Le`arc En Ciel (I think that's how you spell it) (they did the opening theme for FMA)
I'm American so I might not have that much of an opinion for japanese music.....
But whatever ;P

the pillows use a lower case 'p' (no really it's true) but whatever they pillows did every song in FLCL and even wrote 2 new ones just fro the show. and what opening did Le`arc En Ciel do? please tell me it wasn't 'ready steady go!'

It's L' Arc-en-Ciel and yes, it was ready steady go. They also did the opening for GTO, Driver's High.

If you want to be really technical it's L'arc~en~Ciel. Their name confused me so much when I fisrt started listening to them, but they're pretty good. I know it took me a little getting used to Hyde's voice.
You might also like HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR (it still confuses me which words to capitalize), or Asian Kung-foo Generation (they did some songs for Naruto).

I also recommend Tamaki Nami (I don't know exactly what she's done for anime, I didn't get into her from anime), as well as T.M.Revolution!! :D I know that he has done stuff for Gundam, I don't know which one though... I don't watch Gundam -_-
Anyhoo. I highly recommend them =)

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, but the "A" in "Arc" is actually capitalized too :O
So, it would be: L'Arc~en~Ciel.

All these bands that have done one or two songs for an anime and so everyone is fapping over them are totally ****ing lame.

An Cafe, and Youna. Youna did Houki Boshi. Also Miyavi, Dir en Grey, are some good groups.

Namie Amuro!!!
Then again, she has drifted out of the "J-Pop" direction....
Ummm... Otsuka Ai? (I'm not a fan of hers, but I do love her latest song "CHU-LIP".. The music video is pretty freaky too! LOL!)
But your musical tastes are kinda vague, kid! What kind of music are you into?(please don't say everything, because if you do, I'll be compelled to post my iTunes Library!)
If you're into J-Urban, I can give you a crapload of recommendations!!! ;)

If you're looking for something a little heavier than pop, you might like X Japan, MUCC, or Dir en Grey. You might also like Malice Mizer (What genre of music would they be classified as anyways?) And recently Girugamesh (I can't do the spiffy little accent thing with this keyboard) I recently started to listen to, and they're alright. Kagrra has some cool music too, as well as Pierrot (which I personally like, especially most of the songs from the Dictators Circus album).
If you're looking for something more techno-y I personally think m.o.v.e. is awesome (they did some music for Initial D). Some other artists that you might consider checking out are Tommy February 6 (also known as Tommy Heavenly 6, though they're separate "characters"), and Anna Tsuchiya.

I hear a lot of good things about The Pillows. I might have to check 'em out.
If you already like Hikaru Utada then I recommend:
-Crystal Kay
-Mika Nakashima
-Hyde (I've noticed I like him when he's solo. Not so much when he's in L'Arc En Ciel.)
-Chemistry
-Flow
-Namie Amuro
Check out this one song and video by Chihiro Onitsuka called "Infection." It gives me the shivers.
I heard bands like Rip Slyme are good too. Haven't really heard them myself though.
But whatever you do...don't fall into the Gackt or Ayumi Hamasaki mindless obsession. I'm not dogging all of their songs...some are actually ok. I'm just warning you. Thread softly.

someone needs to chill.. some, actually alot of these bands were big before they did any songs for animes, that's why they were asked to do a song in the first place so yeah.
Malice Mizer is like techno metal visual Kei, I'm not sure my self but I was reading shojo beat and they had an article on them and bands like xjapan, Dir en grey and the one with god awful long/complicated name

I guess so. I've heard and seen people use the term Baroque a lot, but I don't know if it's technically correct.
And which long, complicated-named band? There's lot's of them. Heh. L'Arc~en~Ciel? I've seen longer band names. It's even less complicated for those who know French.

Yeah, and that's why it's lame as hell when someone claims them as their favorite band because "^.^ dey did the OP for FMA!!! ^_^;"
MM had various genres; first was gothic classic rock/romance inspired, then pop, then goth metal and back to classical/romantic. Baroque would be a pretty good coverall description.
Ayu gets Nagase's dick all up in her so she must be doing something right.

I think that's a matter of opinion...remember, Ayumi is one of those "you either like her or hate her" artists. By all objective accounts, her voice is rather...unrefined, but I happen to like her voice, for whatever reason I can't exactly pinpoint, and so do many others.
To the starter of this thread, I recommend listening to a few of her songs. Her first album or two aren't as highly recommended, but most everything after that is pretty good.
Also, based on your tastes I would also recommend Every Little Thing, Do as Infinity, dream, and The Brilliant Green (Tommy
Heavenly/February's old band, which in my opinion is a lot better than her solo act).

I guess this would be the right time to say, "To each his own."
But I can't stand Hamasaki's vocals. They're a little too unrefined for me. I'd get more pleasure listening to sharp, rusty nails on a chalk board.
I guess I can understand where you're coming from though. There are other artists' vocals I like that aren't the norm either.

The reason I didn't say my tastes is because they're really varied... i just want to know what other people recommend and find out for myself if they're good.... Basically.. I don't want to be tied down by specific genres. Thanks to everyone that's posted :) I've found loads of great artists and I'm quite well stocked.

Dir en grey (i would start out with their older stuff) They are really weird, and their songs are usually heavy.
antic cafe-a lot of people like them when starting out to listen to japanese music, as the beats are catchy and their look lis adorable (a litle diff since bou left) . Their music is light and happy (lol nyappy describes it best) while they also have some darker songs with screaming vocals (candyholic, kirirkiri 3p...)
the vocalist miku has a strange but great voice, and the lyrics sometimes make no sense xDD
Lárc en ceil is good. I like their music alot.
