How did it make you, the past winners of RSoM, feel when you heard about the plagiarism in the present contest?

I'm not a previous winner, but I honestly think that it's hillarious. Whoever that Hendra person is ended their carreer before it even had the chance to begin.

LOL Yeah sort of like planting the seed but not giving it water and sunshine!

Plagiarists suck. D< And Hendra doesn't even deserve a chance to be given a career as an artist. Since that jackass obviously isn't gonna be working in the art field, I hope he goes and works for McDonald's flipping burgers the rest of his life. Or hangs himself. Either one works for me.

Tis a little harsh I think (the hanging thing...). Sad thing is if Hendra was using a nom de' plume (pen name, pseudonym) then he/she still has a chance...

I don't really think that's very appropriate of a wish, honestly.
Please refrain from this kind of venemous speech. Regardless of the situation, I'd say there are many sides to every issue and that needs to be taken into consideration.

There was plagiarism? O_o

There's a thread in the Rising Stars of Manga section of this forum, if you want to know what's going on.

Really upsetting... I mean it is quite odd to just go out and do that...

Since I'm a PAST 'winner,' it doesn't really bother me that much, since what's going on now really has no effect on my career or the fact that I managed to place in a contest. Considering there are AT LEAST seven entries in the top twenty that are significantly better than Samurai Zombie in more than one fundamental way, there was no way in hell that thing was getting into the book, anyway, unless all the editors doing the judging were suddenly abducted and replaced by alien pod people.
So, more or less, I am perplexed by this situation as I try to figure out exactly what Hendra Wahjudi was on that he and/or she decided to do this. The story is so terrible and cliche that I find it hard to believe the entry was meant to be read seriously, but I also don't think it's a parody, because a parody would have smarter writing, you'd think. Perhaps it's an extremely pointless and somewhat amusing exercise in performance art...who knows.
Who I really feel sorry for is TOKYOPOP, because a lot of people will just use this as an excuse to bash the company, when the blame rests solely on Hendra Wahjudi (whoever that is) for turning in unoriginal work.

Jeezus, Parfait. Simmer down. I've had my work copied before too... but I don't think people should kill themselves over it.
As for the Samurai Zombie entry. I gotta give the guy credit for thinking he could get away with it. I mean, it -is- RSOM after all. Pretty sure at least one of the readers would have recognized the Blade of the Immortal ripoffs. I did... and didn't say anything since I thought someone else would probably mention it. Lo and behold, I was right.
Do plagiarists suck? Yeah. But people make bad decisions sometimes. Take the entry out of the running, let it be a lesson learned, and move on with your lives. Spend your time and energy on something more productive.

Yes! That's really what I've been trying to say in the other thread about this. I applaud you.

Beanclam took the words out of my mouth. Sometimes people just do brainless things, if I were in control I'd just take it out of the running and move on. There's more important things to think about in life.

DUDE. I was kidding. But since the intranets is a veeery serious place, I'm not allowed to do that. : D

Personally I just think it's pathetic. I wasn't very impressed by the entry in the first place. Then to learn that it was lifted from a manga I actually like...
That's just lame.

Beanclam is right, IMHO..... I don't think people should get so worked up over it. Spend all this precious energy on something else. >_>
It seems to me that some people are REALLY sensitive about this matter, for some reason. I remembr browsing around the Gaia online art forum, and see people accuse others of theft about some pretty silly things...
So that guy made a mistake. He made a bad decision, and acted brainless-ly. That doesn't make him a horrible evil criminal who deserves to be endlessly bashed or something. >_>

That's what I'm worried about. I all ready see the usual harpies cawing in with garbage like...what do you expect, it's RSOM and I think that's a cheap and undeserved shot.

How do I feel about the plagiarism? Mostly just annoyed that so much time was wasted - the editors who read it (and I know they agonize over deciding the top 20, so I'm sure they read it more than once), the people who have laboriously exposed it, and for that matter all of our time for having to discuss it.
I feel bad for the good artists who feel that they were cut out of the top 20 by this, even knowing that if they were one of those that just missed the cut for the online voting they were unlikely to make it into the book. (I know just having your work online as one of the top 20 must feel wonderful!)
I am mostly of the opinion that this was a prank entry of some time, because of the massive time expenditure & labor that would have to go into tracing so many panels, but then again I have learned never to underestimate the lengths people will go to for stupid plagiarism and the fleeting fame (& eventual notoriety) it brings.
In the end, though, I think the effect on RSoM will be minimal. If it had ended up in the book I expect it would have been a bigger scandal, but from what the editors have been hinting it didn't, so I'm not worried. I do expect that TP will likely keep a sharper eye out for these things in future, but it's just not possible for any one editor - or even a group of three - to have read every manga out there.

Has this entry in the contest been deleted?
If not, then I'm placing a little bit of blame on Tokyopop. It's hard to believe that they don't know about it by now, and it should have been gotten rid of asap.

that's a good point. sure, the editors at Tokyopop are fans of manga (why else would they work at a manga company?), but it's just not at all possible to know about evey single series out there. just today i was browsing Amazon.com and found a couple titles i had never heard of before. and as Bewildered said, a lot of time and effort goes into this contest. that's how it gets down to the final contestants.
i don't know if it was a prank entry. if it was, then why did it look like someone put a whole lot of time into drawing it? even if it is a prank not that much work would go into it, just enough to make it the a higer level of the contest.
it would have been terrible if this was discovered once the book was published. poor Tokyopop would be bashed big time... ouch... it's a good thing the editors caught it when they did.
CrimeofPassion, i checked the sight, and they're posting the contest result in April. we'll see. the entry was most likely deleted.
