A 13-year-old Plainfield boy and his parents are stunned and outraged after the teen found a gun in school and turned it in to authorities, who then expelled him.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports Ryan Morgan's parents and supporters attended the school board meeting Wednesday evening to try to fight the expulsion. They believe the punishment, and the subsequent alternative school option, are not the proper responses to a mistake made by a teenage boy.

Ryan Morgan, 13, says he pocketed a pellet gun he and a friend found in their school's bathroom to keep people safe. Morgan's mother says a short time later Morgan gave the gun to the Troy Middle School assistant principal.

"I told him maybe that wasn't the best decision, to remove that gun, but it did lead to you finding the culprit, he was arrested and to put my son in alternative school -- he has no behavior problems," Audrey Morgan, Ryan's mother, said.

The Morgans say there was no reasoning with the principal or with the school superintendent.

"He said, 'The board can give your son full two-year expulsion, I'm asking you not to go before them,'" Audrey Morgan said.

They went anyway, saying they had nothing to lose, only to see the meeting minutes already recommend expulsion.

Roy Morgan says he can't accept that, but accepts his son's decision.

"He said 'I'm going to turn this in' and you know what, I commend my son for making that decision. It was the right decision," he said.

School board officials issued a statement Wednesday night saying due to confidentiality reasons they can't discuss the specifics of this case, but that "purposeful possession of weapons is a serious offense and deserves careful consideration by the administration and the school board."

Zero tolerance gone overboard.

At least he didn't try to kill himself with it.

Talk about an injustice... and it was only a pellet gun! I've been shot with one of those things and the worst I got was mild bruising. They should be thanking that kid for giving it in before some idiot found it and used it to hurt people.

How the hell is that even allowed to happen? A kid gets punished for handing in a gun therefore preventing some other kid (who might not be as sensible) from finding it.
This truly is a f****d up world that we live in, when injustices like that are allowed to happen.

That's not right. that kid made the right choice by turning that gun in and they're going to punish him for it.

Wait...why did they mention his name in the article? .__.;; He's 13. Minor...

Ah, that's seriously messed up. --;; That's like saying, "Okay, you see a dying man the street, you better just walk by, don't call the police or you'll be arrested" Okay, so next time I see someone that needs help in school, I'll just walk by and pretend I didn't see. Yup. =l

Wow, so now kids cant open birthday presents early, show appreciation for their teachers, OR hand in dangerous objects to authorities to prevent anything bad from happening?

Kind of reminds me of how at my school a girl got arrested and suspended for bringing in a butter knife (for peanut butter) to school and some people tried to suspend her. Geez.

Ok so this one boy brought a knife to school and was threatening people with it nad only got suspended for 21 days and this 13 year old boy gets expelled for handing it over to the authorities?
Makes me wonder what kind of environment the future generation is in.

so what did they want him to do? hold on to it to cause more future problems? for it to accidently go off and hurt someone?

He probably should've just left the gun where he found it and get a teacher to handle it, but to expell him after he handed in the gun to the assistant principal is absolutely ridiculous.

that makes no sense to expell someone that was doing the right thing.

But if he were smart he would of left it were it lay and got the attention of the school officials.

Well, the kid could be lying. That's all I can say in the matter.

True, but it's still wrong to expell the kid for trying to do the right thing.

He could have stay there where the gun was found while his friend got an adult. Thats what happens when you watch too much TV. Everyone wants to be a hero. ;)

Seriously.
Although.. the boy could've have just told the authorities where the pellet gun was.

It's sorta like removing something from a crime scene.
