View Full Version : Girls Suspended for Talent Show Act

The parents of five Gwinnett County teens are still shaking their heads in disbelief after the girls found themselves abruptly suspended from school for singing a Spice Girls song.
Not only that, they were also barred from going to their graduation celebration.
The 8th graders at Five Forks Middle School are just days away from their big end-of-the-year celebration. But straight-A student Rachel Lowe won’t be there. Neither will four of her closest friends.
The five are being punished for singing a song that every “tween” in the world knows by heart -- “Wannabe” by The Spice Girls.
The girls got a standing ovation from the crowd, but an in-school suspension from the principal.
“When school came the following Monday morning, the principal pulled the five girls in and was very angry at them, and told them that they ruined the talent show and that she wanted to get up on the stage and jerk the microphone out of their hands,” said mother Raylene Lowe.
The issue is over one word that the principal thought inappropriate -- lover.
The parents say the lyrics are, at best, G-rated bubble gum. Now, what they want, what they really-really want, is for the school to allow the girls to go to their class party.
“To take away their 8th grade celebration -- which is one of their few socials they've had in the three years that she's been there -- I thought that was very harsh,” Lowe said.
School officials say the girls were told to change the lyrics, but the kids say that's not true, and that it shouldn't be a crime for nice girls to sing The Spice Girls.
Gwinnett County school officials declined to respond on camera, saying that the school's principal and faculty are allowed to decide what lyrics are inappropriate.
I don't get what's so inappropriate about the word lover?
http://www.arcticchat.com/forums/html/emoticons/smiley_aajh.gif I hope I don't get banned for saying that...
Edit: Accidently put this thread in the wrong section. >.<

Lover is most often used in the sexual partner sense. I'd guess that that was their problem with it.

God, if I was one of those girls Id smack the principal at her idiocy, I mean she's suspended anyway so why not, right? And here I was suggesting that a few of my friends dance to the song 'Buttons' on stage for the multi-cultural show.. haha

WHAT!!! That is total harshness; I hope they get out of it. That has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. If they had on inappropriate clothing maybe then, but if it was only the words to the song, then that is stupid to get in trouble for.
edit: I have heard worse at my schools talent show even, and that was from the teachers non-the less.

The punishment is kind of much, but yeah, 'if you wanna be my lover', in other words; 'if you wanna have sex with me' isn't the most appropriate thing to be singing.
They should have given them a warning, though, not a straight out punishment. They probably don't even know the intended meaning of the words.

This isn't the first time something like this happen. I even saw something like this one MTV true or true life; their documentary program. A few high school kids had done some song and they got suspended. The only difference from this is they were in high school and you got to see them do the song …and get suspended.

..Spice Girls...? --;; Geez. I don't think "Lover" is inappropriate. I think that the principal was thinking too hard. Aiya.
Aratos
12-10-2006, 09:10 AM
Well it _is_ innapropriate.
I mean, the word "zigaziga" means "to have sex", and they've said as much on record.
In other words, the chorus states "I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, i really really really wanna get laid".

Like 13 year olds know that?
Aratos
12-10-2006, 09:52 AM
That's an excuse? School should've told them to sing something more suitable.
besides, no reason 13-year-olds shouldn't know it. I mean, I found out from a documentary when I was twelve.
MomoxD
12-10-2006, 09:54 AM
I don't remember the lyrics to the songs, but I don't think that I thought about that at age 13. I didn't think about what they really meant. ._.;; To me, I think that I thought that they were just words to fit nicely into a song XD. I didn't analyze and study it. I mean, I used to be a fan of the Spice Girls when I was like 8, but I didn't know what they meant by any of their lyrics. I still think the principal was thinking too hard. Actually, until you guys said that "lover" was inappropriate I never really thought about that. XD Up until last night, it was just another word. ^^;;;

Remembering the spice girls also had such lyrics as "wanna make love to ya baby", "tonight is the night when two become one" and "you make me feel naked", suddenly it doesn't seem like thinking too hard...
MomoxD
12-10-2006, 10:08 AM
--; I still don't think I thought about what they meant when I was 13. It's like singing it because it sounds catchy in a song, but not acknowleding what they mean, but hey, I don't know about today's 13-year-olds (my sister not included). Do they know more than 13-year-olds, 5 years ago? I don't know.
Aratos
12-10-2006, 10:11 AM
I was 13 5 five years ago, and I knew waaay too much.
But tehn I grew up on an island, and we were all a tad overly-knowledgable, even in primary school.
MomoxD
12-10-2006, 10:17 AM
I was 12, five years ago but I was rounding it off to 5 since it was 4 and half...but anyway, I know I didn't know that much 5 years ago. I grew up sheltered, so I can't say if they knew what the lyrics meant or not. I just assumed that they didn't. If I was principal, I wouldn't think they knew what the lyrics meant anyway. I guess I underestimate 13-year-olds, but when I was 13, I knew none of that. I didn't start learning other things until I was 15-16 or so. Meh. =T

Aratos
12-10-2006, 12:17 PM
it's zigazigah. Or zig-ah-zig-ah depending who you ask.
Anyway, you can't say you missed the sexy pronunciation of the "ah" at the end?

Talim
12-10-2006, 12:37 PM
I think that they should have thought about what to sing at that talent show. I kind of agree with Aratos, they should have used their heads more. I'm not saying that they're stupid or anything, but common sense would be a little nice to have. I know a couple of 13 year olds, and I'm sure that they wouldn't do such a thing ... no matter how immature they are. But that's just my opinion.
SweetNymph
12-10-2006, 12:42 PM
Doesn't mean they deserve to be suspended for it. That's way too harsh. Singing a song the administration thinks is inappropriate is not on par with carrying weapons or vandalizing the school. Especially a song everyone and their grandma knows.

Yes, I agree that it was a bit harsh ... but I'm sorry as to what had happened. (Although I wasn't there, but saying sorry makes me feel better ... don't ask please.) But that's all I'm saying. People should think before they act. I'm not siding with anyone, I'm just telling you all my own opinion. It is true that I agree and disagree with some of you, but that's just how we all are. I do think that detention or something like that would have been more wise to use, but then again ... we (or at least I think that) were not there when that happened. It might also have been the way they were dressed or something, I don't know. We can say that the administrators were wrong or whatever, but we can't really do anything, so let's just keep it at that. ^^

Those girls shouldn't be suspended, especially over some word like lover. I could understand if maybe the girls were dressed slutty or had danced inappropriately on stage, then she would have had a reason to say something. But to pick a fight over a single word makes no sense whatsoever. How old is this principal any way? Does she come from some overly strict, religious background or something?

Really? Had no clue. They don't really announce anything about the SG here in the US. I heard Emma (Baby Spice) released a sexual song...or video, but it didn't get a lot of air time.
