Child Arrested for Opening Christmas Present Early
Distraught mother rats on her own son.
by Micah Seff

December 5, 2006 - In a shocking display of parenting prowess, a Rock Hill, S.C. woman reportedly called police and had them arrest her son after he was caught opening a Christmas present early. After receiving the call, police arrested the boy and charged him with petty larceny.

The Rock Hill Herald reported that the child's great-grandmother had warned him repeatedly about opening his present early, protestations that he apparently ignored. The present in question was a Game Boy Advance.

"He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it," the 63-year-old great-grandmother told the Herald.

When the boy's mother found the package lying unwrapped and empty under the tree, she immediately approached the child, who proceeded to lie to her. After threatening him with calling the police, the boy apparently returned the toy to his begrudging mother, who then called the police anyway. Although he was not jailed, the two officers responding to the call did charge him with petty larceny.

The boy's mother told the Herald that she had reached the end of her rope with the child, and no longer knew what else to do with him. She claimed that she has been struggling with his constant behavior problems for a while now, and could no longer handle his misconduct.

"I'm trying to get him some kind of help," the 27-year-old mother told the paper. "He's the type of kid who doesn't believe anything until it happens."

According to the boy's mother, he had already been caught shoplifting, stealing money from her, and punching a police officer. She told the Rock Hill Herald that she hopes this arrest will put a stop to his errant ways, because she is worried about his safety. The newspaper reported that the mother plans on having her son placed in the custody of the state Department of Juvenile Justice in Colombia at his court appearance.

Wow. Just wow.
Hasn't this mother ever heard of good ol' discipline?

Maybe if he was a good boy his parents would have bought a DS.

I'm....speechless. =O

Ooookaay. Calling the police because he opened a present early... @_@ Geez. That lady can't parent at all. I wonder if he used a fork instead of a spoon to eat, would she call the police on him again? -__-;; I'm sorry to say but she sounds like an idiot...

That is a bit extreme for a parent to do. But there are a lot of kids out there that can get way out of control. Ever see Nanny 911?

And it's the fault of the parent for letting them get out of control. If she beat his ass once in a while he'd probably act better. D:

Y'know, there was one society where people were encouraged to grass on family members for any crime at all...

Only one? I'm sure we could find more than just Nazi Germany as an example if we looked throughout human history.

true, but I'm not in the mood to incite religeous hatred today. The nazis and the russians are the only ones I can think of that weren't into religeon.

Now that I think about it... It does.

Anyway, I know the kid's a troubled one but the mom took it pretty far. Instead of letting the police handle it she should've given him a spanking or whatever.

My mom would have just whooped me and it would have been done. But I guess that it was not really about the present at all. It was about her not being able to control him. I guess that just sent her over the edge no matter how mediocre it was.

Woo! That was a good laugh. Idiotic Mother. It's not even that serious. Why do people think things are that serious?

Calling the police wouldn't do anthing, especially if it's over something stupid like opening an Xmas preasent too early. If I was that kid's mother I'd probably come up with a more creative punishment, like make him donate his Game Boy Advance to poor children who actually deserve it. That'll teach him to mess with me. http://2.forumer.com/html/emoticons/metanet/EvilGrin.gif

I think she had him arrested more because a month ago he assaulted a police officer than because he opened the gift early. Better late than never, I guess.

Aratos

then why was the charge merely theft?

Of course technically it _was_ his to take.

shadowmose

I think its theft because he broke into his grandmas place in order to get the gifts.

I think the charge was only theft because the assault on a police office happened a month earlier and it was probably a separate charge. But I don't know. Anyway, what I meant was that after doing something big like attacking a police officer, the kid's mom has probably decided it would be wise to crack down on lesser offences before it gets to the point of assaulting police officers again. I think technically, the Gameboy is "evidence" now, so he'll have to wait even longer to get it if he even gets it at all, hehe.

maybe its because he's just a trouble kid and playing for something that he did wrong will make it right and change his ways.

That would've definately worked. But everything's considered child abuse these days, that's why kids are so spoiled. But it hasn't stopped all good parents from rightful discipline.

Wait, the gift was at his grandma's house? I thought she'd given it to him and it was at his house.

So true!
Sometimes I see some ruuuuuuude children talking back or even hitting their parents, it's awful! At times, it makes me want to go over and beat the snot of their kid for them!

^ you know you're a very volient person, but whatever.

The belt only works for so long, before the child builds muscle back there.

Calling the police because he opened a present early was a bit too extreme. I think it also shows that she's too afraid to do anything herself. So yeah, it is her fault that her kid turned out that way. If I had done something like that when I was a kid, not only would I have not gotten the present, I would have been punished for it, too.

Ahhh... He's 12. Understandable.

I don't think it was over-the-top for the mother to call police. Some children are just too hard to handle. And she's probably the type that don't hit their kids.
