As someone who is pretty good with Punk I have to say some of the bands I have not heard much of. Then again I listen to more Post Punk music then I do actuall punk bands.

Anyway my favorites are:

The Damned
The New York Dolls (for more glam influence)
45 Grave (for more Death Rock influence)

They are just my personal favorites. I have more favorites but I figured I just leave off with these.

that was a joke, at the expense of the internet, which is an endless collection of lists of people's favorite bands. in all seriousness, the definition of punk differs depending on who you talk to. as much as the various different factions would like to think, there is no one right answer. punk is alot of things. punk is everything/nothing. music, lifestyle, attitude, fashion, philosophy, a set of strict rules, a slang word for "hooligan," etc. anyone who says different is failing to grasp the bigger picture.

also i've been into punk since before you were 8. wham, seniority!

word.

the desparate/futile need to categorize and define is the same for most genres of music. goth, punk, hip-hop, metal, indie, various electronic stuff... all much more similar than most members of the respective scenes would like to admit. bickering over vocabulary, fickly deciding who is a sell-out and who is true to the scene, emphasizing politics over actual substance, invariably missing the point.

then again, missing the point is always in fashion. so much so that missing the point becomes the standard. hooray vicious cycles. hooray music.
