Well yesterday I finnally got some inking pens to do inking because I love drawing manga. Usually before now I would just draw with pens but now I am doing all the stuff... scripts... drawing.. rough copy... good copy... inking. AUG it takes so long! it took me 3 hours to do one page and I kept splattering ink everywhere.
does anyone have tips for me? I AM DESPRATE! lol

If you keep splattering ink everywhere why not use some Micron pens and a marker or fude pen? They're pretty easy to work with and you don't have to worry about refilling them. For panels I still use a Sakura Micron 0.5 and a 0.3 for balloons.
Of course I'd still recomend practicing using the pen and nibs as I find in the long run they bear the best results but for the first while with those why not doodle a bit with them untill you get used to the technique? That's how I did things for a while... and it does take a little while to get used to using them, that way you don't have to worry as much about getting ink splattered on your really good stuff.

yah i did doodle and try designs and stuff for an hour. i THOUGHT i had the hang of it. Nibs have great results though if you DO use them right. i think i might have been putting too much ink on it at once.
ANYONE ELSE?

Three hours is pretty good man! Alvin Pensticks are tremendously awesome pens cheap and aviliable from misterart.com
You just need to keep practicing and working at it. Also it could not hurt to try using a brush pen or other pens, reading tutorials online or getting different books on inking. ALSO if you hope to follow the Way of the Ink you should branch out and study some of the American and French masters. Check out Moebius, Herge, Bryan Lee O'Malley, and (ZOMG!) Jeff Smith.
The more you ink and broaden your perspective and the more you reflect and study others work the better you will be and the more you will appreciate others ink.
Happy inking to you : )

Like Mutsuki said, a choice choice is Sakura Microns. Not only do they do a great job for tons of different kinds of lines, but they're pretty cheap for their quality. Another good thing about them is that varying the amount of pressure you put on the pen while inking can increase or decrease the thickness of the lines. So a .01 can become a .05 and so on.
And the fact that you're spending hours on one page in a good sign. :3

Way cool! I also have a manga in progress... sorta ^0^
Can anyone give me some tips on toning? Can it only be done with a computer and what programs do you recommend?
I've got painter and photoshop, but I'm still new to the two of them...

ok... i looked for the sakura pens but cant find them! what stores would they be at?
and isnt 3 hours NOT good? cuz i keep messing up and going so slow... if i were to do a 150 page manga it would take 450 or more hours!

I too would like to know where to get those sakura micron pens... (I can not buy things over the net... TT_TT)
Also it is good that you spent three hours because it is better to take time on a page than zip on through it.

These comic artists spend more than 450 hours on their work. You can expect to spend anywhere from 40 - 70 hours a week working on a comic if you plan to do this professionally. And that's over the span of about 6-8 months.
Anyway. Sakura Microns are a good plan, but unlike what whoever else described, they do not offer pressure-sensitive line variation. Microns are just little nibs, and if you press too hard trying to get a thicker line, you will break them and they'll become useless. What you have to do with microns is make multiple passes until you get the line variation that you want. You do one base inking of completely flat lines, and then go back through adding thickness where it should be, to give your inking depth.
You can generally find them at any good craft or art supply store. They'll either be with all the drawing impliments (like prismacolor colored pencils, charcoal sticks, etc...) or with the scrapbooking materials.

i didnt see them though when i went to michaels. hmm... and if i do get them i would use them for small lines and my others for thick lines. ok...
i am still a bit unsure of how to actually make manga like they actually do in real life! like... can someone type out all the steps for me? (inking, pencil, script ect. in order and how to do them)
if you could i would love you forever and ever... unless you were a guy. then it would be a manly love lol :P
