Tight jeans, tight t-shirts, armbards and wristbands. Colors are usually black with someother bright color eg. black/red black/green black/hot pink.

Checkers are quite popular and nearly every emo wears Converse (Wacky styles are in but just ge the navy ones if you wanna play safe)

Boys normally wear a cap. If no cap, hair is done with plenty of hair gel/wax/spray. Boys also carry small backpacks. Boys may also wear make up such as eyeliner and mascara.

Girls normally wear semi-heavy make up. Scarves and shoulder bags are quite popular witht he female population of emos in my area right now. Hair clips and bright hair ties are popular too.

With hair both genders normally have it looking messy or unwashed. Bright streaks and long hair for both sexes are popular.

Band t-shirts,multiple ear and facial piercings and metal jewellery are also worn.

Just my 2bux. Since I come from emo central of Sydney...

BTW I don't dress and I am not an emo. I know plenty of them though.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure myself. I just think of a kid who:

1) Wears tight clothes.
2) Wears eyeliner.
3) Wears lots of accessories.
4) Has a ton of peircings.
5) Dyes hair at least 3 times a month.
6) Listens to harcore punk music.
7) Is clinically depressed.
8) Needs to go to therapy but can't afford it cause all money is spent on emo clothes, eyeliner, accessories, piercings, hair dye, and hardcore punk CDs.

Whenever I hear the word "emo" I think of this time my friend was mocking emo and he was going on about the world hating him (rather poetically I might add), and then went "I suffocate in this world, in my angst, like I might in my little sister's pants, which by the way look GREAT on me!"

I actually don't mind the style too much, some of it is actually kind of cool. But the music is horrible.

Yeah, 'the emo kid' was originally the loner who sat in the corner feeling sorry for themselves and slitting their wrists. And naturally people took this idea and decided to use it to get attention... Then they got accused of being an emo... Then more people did it... Then there were a lot of emos. Who all made friends... And got happy. So now we have emos that aren't emos. But then the emos that aren't emos all started to dress in a sertain way. Which is rather cool... But very emo... Lookie:-
They all wear those bags that are like... I can't find a pic quite right, but they often have band names on and stuff and they're sort of plasticy and square and over the shoulder...

They also wear other stuff like... Scarfs, anyone ever seen those black and white square scarves? Aaaand... Some paint their nails black but I dunno if that's more gothic... They wear a tonne of makeup, my ex used to wear more than me lol...

There was a trend a while ago where pretty much all the emos I knew claimed to be gay, pretty much all of them were doing it for attention, only problem is they did it all at once. So eveyone thought it was dumb. They all then claimed they weren't really gay, just 'experimental'. Then most of them got over that too and now they're back to straight. *sigh* some people.

I read that because I was bored. that really made me mad, it said that Evanescence and Fall Out Boy were emo bands. they're not emo, Fall Out Boy just dresses emo, because if they were emo they'd suck. that and I plan on going to an art school but that doesn't make me emo, and personally I don't want to be emo, even though according to one of my friens I am, go figure

I, on the other hand, say emo kids are just kids that have a perfect life but pretend they have crappy liofe at school just for attention. In my opinion (I'm insulting alot of my friends here but) Emo is cheap imitation of Goth and Punk. "Emo" Music (which is mostly mainstream stuff) pretty much killed punk music. "Hardcore music" is pretty much a lesser form of Metal. Alot of Emo people try to put all the attention on themselves. "Look at me. I'm depressed, and I cut and I hate my life. Music is my savior." Emo and Goth people have similar problems only from my experiences Goth people don't wear their proplems on their sleeve. Sure they dress dark and depressed but they don't bother anyone.
Do a youtube search for "The Emo Song" (click on the first one, it should have 4000 + rating) it pretty much satirically describes The emo subculture.

you make a very good point. you choose if you like the people based on who they are.
but emo kids choose to be emo, black people dont choose to be black, keep that in mind.
and most emos are depressed. they have emo friends that are depressed. theyre all sad together. so you could generally say that emo kids are depressed. or theyre nto really emo, are they?

Which falls under the same idea. Judging someone based on their preference of style is is as tasteless as judging someone by their skin. Everyone has their own character and making assumptions before you even know them is what Martin Luther King preached against in his "I have a Dream" speech. Let people dress how they want to dress as long as it's not obscene or hateful.

Actually it was. in the 90's it started out to describe music, mainly hard core/punk stuff around seattle. Bu then it turned into this huge fad, which is sadly starting to die out. which kinda makes me sad because I love Emo fashion. it's just so i don;t know but I love it!
