It's a wonder so many people can go on with there everyday lives when our basic rights are being stripped away....
Don't know what I'm talking about? Look it up. It really shatters my faith in humanity to see such injustice being supported by mass ignorance...

Probably, the sportscaster turned anchorman had another fearmongering special commentary referring to the MCA last week in which he showed, once again, that he has no idea about the material he's making comments on.
I cannot believe that people take comedians, sportscasters and the like seriously. Walter Kronkite is spinning in his grave.

Sorry, mind enlightening my feeble mind? Why are you saying that habeus corpus, one of the most important sections of law, is a bad hting?

Wait, wait, I think I _might_ get it. Is this something to do with the comment in wiki about the US constitution allowing it to be removed temporarily during times of crisis, like now?
Some people'll get worked up about anything.

"crisis" doesn't seem to have a concrete definition or set of circumstances anymore, though.

I'd assume the fact there _are_ islamic extremists who support attacks on the US/GB/Europe/anyone who supports Israel would be counted as a crisis by most political commentators.

Yeah, I spell bad...
Anyways a bill was passed into law last week that basically states that if deamed a supporter of terrorism you can be arrested with no hope of a trial and look forward to brutal rape and other forms of torture until you're dead. And well what constitutes a terrorist supporter? Well, it's pretty vague; vague enough for someone like me or perhaps you to be be labeled as such. Nice, yes? The only part of the Bill of Rights that holds any water now is the third... That's not all I'm upset about... It's the fact that this isn't the first time the government has found a way to steal our rights. And what's this? Virtually no air time? In fact the only channel I've heard talk about this is MSNBC. Can you see us getting these rights back? What president would willingly give back such power? Think about it. Can you picture the founding fathers spinning in their graves?

Other news sources besides MSNBC have covered the issue. PBS's The News Hour with Jim Lehrer has had several segments on the new law. (Which is why I knew exactly what you were talking about from the thread name without looking at the link you provided.)

Let me guess, you saw Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment".
I continue to roll my eyes. Especially at this: "Anyways a bill was passed into law last week that basically states that if deamed a supporter of terrorism you can be arrested with no hope of a trial and look forward to brutal rape and other forms of torture until you're dead." The fearmongering telephone game! Fun for the whole family.

The MCA's been over-reported if anything. MSNBC's completed ignored the limitations built into the act and sensationalized it to an amazing extreme. The world didn't end, George Bush didn't eat anyone's baby and your rights are just as secure as they were 7 years ago. Of course, its politcally expedient not to point this out and fear mongering for ratings is par for the course.

Pretty much. The majority of people spreading the whole "our rights are being taken away PANIC" line aren't in any position to even be subject to the Act, since they're citizens of the US and it only provides provisions for dealing with aliens. (Not Yoda, damnit.)

Well don't you know? Mongering in fear is the American way. As for Olbermann, no I didn't see that. I did however read quite a bit about it on the web... Granted it was all pretty much written by hardcore liberal democrates. My point here isn't that we should all live in fear of our government, my point is it pisses me off that our constitutional rights are being stripped away by the hogs in suits, know otherwise as congressmen. Not to mention a little thing called the Genneva Convention... But why bother with that?

You keep saying "our constitutional rights are being stripped away" and not providing any evidence to support this statement. Which rights? Through which legislation? And has it been challenged in court?
What about the "Geneva Convention"? What does the Geneva Convention have to do with our constitutional rights? I'd suggest that rather than shouting out buzz-words, you try to at least say something when you post.

Well obviously because POWs should be given a fair trial and a chance to be released into society instead of being stuck in a camp. Stupid question.

Stupid answer. The question was "What does the geneva convention have to do with "our constitutional rights""? Since these "POW"s aren't American citizens, the rights granted by the US Constitution do not apply in large part. Also, since these people have been captured, they have been given hearings and such, hence the release of the majority of prisoners taken in the conflict. Due to interference with the process (by groups suchs as the ACLU, HRW and the like), this process has been slowed.
Personally, I'd like to see all the lawyers shipped off to camps, but noone listens to me.

Man, I had just explained myself and then it was lost. I'm going to be lazy and not even bother to drag this on. I know what I was saying, and apparently didn't articulate myself well looking back. And wasn't trying to be a hysterical liberal wench... Uhh what else? Yeah, *white flag* I give up, can't change your mind and won't take the time to paint my veiw for you so you can even see what I was saying. So I deffer.
