Okay, I'm going to ask this here because there is no section called "Ask the Translators," heh heh. ^_^

How does TOKYOPOP hire translators? Do they all come from the internship program or do you sometimes use freelancers?

Thanks for listening (and hopefully answering)!

All but one of the translators are freelancers, and only a small percentage came through the intern program. Linlinchan is the Managing Editor; she might be able to shed more light on how freelancers are chosen.

[Edit: well, Alexis is an editor who also translates two books per month, so he's sort of an in-house translator, but a very special case.]

All of our translators are outsourced freelancers. We don't have any translators in house, but the upside of this is that we have freelance translators working for us who live all over the world!
A lot of our translators have come to us through referrals from other translators and the like, though they are not limited at all to people who come from referrals. If not from referral, I often give tests to people via mail to ensure that their translation ability is spot-on, and then if they do meet standards, I will often sign them up for work.

I hope that helps a little!
