Wow. That does suck.
"Otaku are weak and they've got money, so we went after them," one of the arrested youths told the police.
Oh those bastards. T_T
I like the other article too. " Booth babes spice up Tokyo Game Show " Yosh!

Sounds good to me. *loads shotgun*
On a more serious note, what do I think? I think it's a shame but that's it. I see no difference between that sorta thing and robbing someone for their mobile. Or beating up spoiled rich kids for their pocket money (which would in some rare cases be morally justifiable, incidently). Meh. It's mugging someone plain and simple. Why does it matter what the reason is, or whether a specific group is targeted? Theft is theft.

no, aratos, its disgusting, it is bad, targeting someone like that, if you like manga, and anime, youve got taste, and style, and because these pathetic losers with no taste, or style dont understand it, and say, "its for geeks" (id seriously kill someone if they said that to me) they attack decent people. they make me sick those scurge criminals.

...unless you go happy slapping. That's just wrong.
Besides. We _are_ geeks. We're discussing a nice topic on the intraweb ffs.

I'm a nerd.
:p according to this one article that I was reading (cause I like to read the newspapers and magazines for the heck of it)
Nerd - someone who is smart and is very conscious about there social status.
Geek - another smart person who is more intrested in working with computers and cares a little about social status.
Dork - a stupid person. (this is what the article said not me)
Dork is the worst one and the article said that it should be taken as an insult if someone calls you that :p

And now for the dictionary definition:
nerd also nurd (nrd) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "nerd" [P]
n. Slan.
1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
geek (gk) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "geek" [P]
n. Slan.
1.
1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.
dork (drk) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "dork" [P]
n.
1. Slang. A stupid, inept, or foolish person: “the stupid antics of America's favorite teen-age cartoon dorks” (Joshua Mooney).
2. wale penis.
So, as we can see, a geek is a nerd who also bites chickens heads off, whilst a dork is the reproductive organ of a male Cetacean. Glad that that's sorted.

I guess I might qualify to be a nerdy-geek.
Technical pursuits- I can explain and rationalize my expectations of a good sandwich that happens to sound like an essay.....and I take pride in being able to do that.
Overly intellectual- Maybe. People and peers ask me questions that they know "normal" people cannot or, if possible, will not answer to avoid a little persecution.
Miscellaneous- When I'm with a group of people, I'm the "designated geek". I'm the one who has to buy the "weird things"(ex:hentai) in a store. Not using my money. I just have to be the one who gives the cashier the money.
Yeah that's my life....

What does "RPGA GM" stand for?
Aratos
09-29-2006, 08:37 AM
GM = Games Master, the fellow that runs P&P RPG games. Also known as DM, storyteller etc etc.
The RPGA (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga), on the other hand, is a group run by WIzards of the coast, who organise and run most major conventions, most notably Gencon. It's a great system.

I think that we are getting a little bit off the point of this whole thread so no more definitions of what a geek, nerd, or dork is. (even though I was the one who posted up the definitions.) SO no more posting about if your a geek, nerd or whatever topic everyone is currently talking about.

I think it's pathetic that these guys would mug kids half their size. Doing something like mugging a fourteen year old while he's out buying action figures just shows how weak and cowardly these guys are.

Really, when I read the title, I thought it meant something a bit more gruesome. Like a group of people actually HUNTING Otaku, with guns and laser targets and the like, using a crooked taxedermist to stuff their unfortunate prey and mounting their preserved bodies in a sicko trophy room.
Manhattan Hunt Club by John Saul. Good read. ^^

Actually, I was a bit disappointed to hear it was only some mugging. If I was going to hunt otaku I'd do it properly dammit! And yes it would include heads mounted above my fireplace.

That's the challenge. Leaving it intact.
ANYONE can mangle a body. Drunk drivers do it all the time. To end life and still have a presentable corpse is the work of a master.

Bugs Bunny being a bishie dressed in Bunny Ears, of course and Fudd cute in brown, tall, dark, handsome and -gasp- not bald. Chasing after his beloved world after world as Bigs runs from him, trying to escape fate. Now that the storyline is down, we have to dicuss things like seme and uke. XD

He'll have cute white hair and big blue eyes. It will match perfectly with his large grey bunny ears. He'll be one of those girly little bishies who squeal alot and are so cuuuuuute!! =^-^= And he'll have a dark and mysterious angsty past so he get all cute and agsty when the need arises.
Off topic? Naaaah. We're still discussing Otaku hunting, no?

Akiba-kei otaku tend to be older and a little more well-off finacially than their American counterparts, and in Japan it's a cultural thing that people tend to carry money in the form of cash rather than using cards.
So it's a little surprising that the "hunters" are targeting children when they could both be less pathetic and get more money
BTW, there's a Japanese TV drama (based off a novel, of which there's also a manga) called Akihabara@deep, where a team of otaku come together to protect Akiba, and in the first episode they thwart a gang of otaku hunters using high-tech know-how, a cafe maid's l33t fighting skills, and sheer audacity. I'm gonna have to go to Kinokuniya and pick up the novel today...

http://www.dannychoo.com/blog_entry/eng/903/Otaku+Hunting/
"Otakugari" (オタク狩り(おたくがり)) means "Otaku Hunting" and is something thats been around for a while. Its common knowledge that otaku carry around quite a bit of cash and are a prime target for muggers. Japan is strangely still a country where the credit card adoption rate is low. Everybody seems to carry around wads of cash and stash it at home. Some bloke had over 100,000,000 yen stolen from him which he kept in his house!
An interview with an otaku hunter
Q: How much can you get in one catch?
A: From about 3,000 yen to 30,000 yen. The most I have got in one catch was 130,000 yen. That was last year though.
Q: Who do you aim for?
A: The ones who seem to be wandering around - the weak ones. I dont go for the ones who have dyed their hair brown or have a good build.
Q: And why is that?
A: Its not as if I'm scared of them. Just want to be able to get my money easily without hassle.
Q: Why do you hunt otaku?
A: Its easier to steal money from otaku than my dad or others on the street. Besides, otaku have loads of money.
Q: Dont you feel guilty?
A: Not an ounce (laughs). I sometimes feel bad when stealing money from my dad though. Otaku are dirty and smelly. They should be exterminated. Its just like Dragon Quest where you beat the monster and take the gold.
Q: Why do you hate otaku that much?
A: No reason. Well they are like cockroaches. They have the same smell.
Q: Have you had victims retaliate?
A: Not once. Thats why I cant stop doing it.
Q: Dont you think about what happens when you are arrested?
A: No. I'll leave it to then to think about it. I try hard not to get caught you know.
The hunter waits for his prey outside Messe Sano (doujin shop) and places like Sofmap (eroge). He usually tries to get them before they go in - before they spend their cash. What he then does is put his arm around their shoulder and drag then into a side alley. The arm-around-shoulder is supposed to make them look like friends. He then says "can you lend me some money?" where upon his victim hands over the cash...
The photos at the end of the interview are of alley ways that Akiba otaku should be familiar with - this is where much of the otaku hunting takes place.
While the crime rate is low in Japan, we do get our share of crime - like these cases of otaku hunting and people putting ice cream in a post box (which made the 6PM news slot).
