On top of the above question, who gave you the idea that listening to rock makes ya goth?

And who are "all you stereotypes"?

Then what's satan have to do with goth?
First it was something about if you listen to rock you're a goth and now, after you've tried to explain it some more, you say it's because supposedly if you like rock you like satan.

I don't what little bird tells you you're info but whatever it is, grab it and snap it's neck.

Prehaps, we just use differnt terms of naming music. And r u sure that new wave or age is not the same as goths, they all wear black clothes and have their hair diyed black, and dark eyeshadows, I have a goth in my class, trust me, shes nuts 4

different names for the same thing is always a viable option, but you're mixing up genres that have pretty well-defined boundaries. also granted these things may have different names elsewhere in the world. i can only speak (however authoritatively) for america, and i suppose the UK by extension...

traditional goth music is stuff like siouxsie and the banshees, the bauhaus and the cure

new age is stuff like yanni and enya

new wave is stuff like the talking heads and blondie

my chemical romance is somewhere between pop-punk and pop-emo, both very recent styles, both very distinct from goth and new wave.

also note that goth and emo are not the same thing, actually very different. ask any goth/emo kid and you will get a 10-minute lecture about how one is just ripping off the other (depending on who you ask.)

hmmmm....this thread is confusing... My brother listens to death metal and black metal. Cannibal Corpse, Black Dahlia Murder, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, etc.

And here I thought this would be a thread about death metal...

Okay, let's set a few things straight-

Death metal is a genre of metal derived from grindcore and thrash. It is called death metal after the Florida metal band Death, who is widely considered to be the first true death metal band. Other examples of death metal would Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Cryptopsy and Suffocation. Whoever said bands Mudvayne and Godsmack were death metal have no idea what they're talking about.

Goth (short for gothic)is an offshoot of punk and new wave focusing on dark themes and vampire type romance. It is often characterized by it's almost chamber music type arrangements, dirge like vocals and live theatrics. Some examples of goth would be early work by Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus (as somone had already mentioned) early material by The Cure (most notably the albums Faith and Pornography) and pretty much any band on the Projekt label.

New Age and New Wave are also completely different. New Age would be stuff like Yanni and Kitaro, New Wave would be bands like The Cars, Missing Persons and Flock of Seagulls.

Hope this clears things up. In short, if you don't know what you're talking about, you probably shouldn't open your mouth.

Now, can we please have some death metal discussion? I'll even get it started- Did anyone go to Maryland Deathfest this year or plan to go next year?

good to see someone else knows what they're talking about.

death metal wise, i have been listening to Arch Enemy on repeat all day.

also no, maryland is all the way in maryland.

Well, if you want to REALLY split hairs, Arch Enemy would be Swedish Death Metal, which has really evolved into it's own genre, but I'll let that go. (just messin' with you)

And I live in Texas, but that didn't stop me from going to MDF for the last two years. It's all about priorities, man. ;)

i wanted to go to MDF since its right down the road, but alas... no money~ i'll definitely try to save up for next year though.

If you're down with the death metal and can get there, by all means go, it's a lot of fun. I've been amazed at the variety of the bands from all over the world they've been able to get to play. I don't think that his year was as good as last, but it was still a lot of fun. After seeing them live, I have a new respect for Necrophagist.

Made me think of a skit from SNL. Hehe.

Anyway...

I listen to different types of rock. When I last checked I don't identify myself as goth or any of those things and I don't worship Satan (or anyone actually).

Psssh.

actually the emo/goth thing i find super hilarious lately.

i remember a decade back that emo was more or less an extension of the hardcore scene.
(it started more in the mid 80's, but i'm talking my area's encounters with it)

sweaters, thick glasses, you know the kids beat up in high school.
then somehow in the last 5 years they jump all over tight black jeans, eyeliner, black hair, and yet still somehow look down on goths.
even sillier the kids typically get offended if you refer to them as goth despite they essentially absorbed the "standard issue uniform"

it's amazing how so many genres of music can have fashion attached right to it, yet jazz and idm don't.

tomselleck69
09-28-2006, 10:24 PM
well, jazz and idm are for people who have grown out of the "i really care about visually fitting in" phase.

although it could be argued that berets and goatees are always in among jazz enthusiasts.

and i suppose richard d. james' face could be considered an accessory.

my personal idea is that idm guys spend so much time doing bizzare things for example like using equations to randomly generate midi sequences based on a given scale, or circuit bending a copy of mall madness to belch out a bassline.

and something to fit the thread, what ever happened to Mortician?

i really don't care about what people say cause i love goth music "my dying bride" but i also listen to others metal etc only rock music, i hate marilyn manson n linkin park! i don't think they present rock music! there so much other cool bands that does real music like k's choice and silverchair eventhough they are not that very popular there are pple who adore them! some years ago papers said that rock died that's coz they were only focusing on that horrilbe ragga and pop stuff!
p.s i'm not goth, don't wear black gears or metal chain hanging. don't pray satan or anything! just plain ordinary artist! well dyed my hair red but that fits me lol! no dark nail polish no face piercing either! my boyfriend adore death metal and don't like stuff i listen too.

that is the new wave section of an mp3 website.

doesn't really help or hurt either of our points.

now if the argument had been "new wave exists" vs. "new wave doesn't exist," then someone would've won just now for sure.

i actually like marilyn manson. he's a very intelligent human being. you should check out some of his interviews like in bowling for columbine or when he was on disinformation.
but music wise, i still like him. i don't think he's death metal though, is he? o_O;
