Alright!
Another year for sweet, sweet Anime North in Toronto, Ontario.
Anybody from Canada here going to the con? Anyone making a journey from the states? If so, where are you staying?
Now the Double Tree Hotel (which is where most of the convention activities will be taking place) is already fully booked, which means I'll be staying at the Park Plaza down the road.
Not too bad, but last year we booked a room at the Double Tree only a couple of weeks before the con, so I imagine they're probably holding some rooms for those last minute people.
Either that, or it's shaping up to be the biggest turn out for the con so far.
Anyone cosplaying?
I'll probably be going as Jack Russell from Radiata Stories.
For the full details on the con, http://www.animenorth.com
I've gone ever year since 2k3 ^^.
Cosplay= Nia(DearS)

Awesome! *thumbs up*
Maybe I've seen you there before. ;)
Hmm ... I'm not familiar with DearS, so I dunno. :(
I cosplayed as Kamon (Naota's dad) from FL CL my first year, but unfortunately, no one knew what FL CL was at the time.
Awesome! *thumbs up*
Maybe I've seen you there before. ;)
Have you cosplayed in the past?
No, last year my costume was killed in a horrible horrible attack of motion sickness...
I was supose to be Excel, but the costume was ruined.

As in Excel from Excel Saga? :D
Too bad the costume was ruined, because that would have been awesome.

I would have recognized that cosplay, but I guess I didn't see you there.
Actually I was supose to meet up with some friends, but never found them last year. I have a friend that calls it the AN curse.

I know! I worked real hard on it to T_T.
I'm packing fishermen's friend this time to ward off the queasy ones ^_^

It's going to be quite the party. ;)

I was sick with a sore throat all week before con last year, and I didn't have any voice at all by the weekend. Xp
I survived mostly on Halls and bottled water all weekend.

I asked if there's any chance of them having extra spots closer to the date, and they said it only happens when people cancel their reservations.
I had been unlucky to book it fairly late, but no one seemed to mind having a different room each day...haha. Crazy anime fans.

Well I'm not really sure if that has improved, as I bought practically nothing at the 2k3 con. But I did clean up at the 2k5 con, and got a pretty good deal on just about everything ^^.
I'll be going, and hopefully for the whole weekend ^^; Haven't been before so I'm getting really excited.

My group wasn't so lucky. We're down the street at the Park Plaza for now. Xp
Ah, well. The Double Tree has really cracked down on security this year, and apparently no one can even get into an elevator/up the stairs unless they have a room key.
The Park Plaza may be down the road, but at least it will be more liberal.
@Gokhan: Really? Hm. I noticed that it's usually considerably less to buy merch at the con, especially on Sunday since most vendors sell their stuff for a lot less since they don't want to have to pack it all back up again.

We're still trying to get the Double Tree if any rooms become available, but I doubt we will be able to. :p
The Park Plaza is great, anyway. :D

Definitly closer then our hotel last year.
It was a 35 minute walk away, and actually in an area out side of toronto.
I found that amusing actually, I forget what the area was called tho.

Woah. Crazy. o_O
Last year I was in the Double Tree. It was a lot of fun.
I actually ended up not sleeping at all Friday night 'cause the person I was sharing a bed with thrashed about in his sleep.
So I went out to my friends car, but I just couldn't sleep in a car. :p

Awesome.
Looks like there's going to be a bigger turn out than ever this year.
Is this your first AN, or have you attended previous years?
On a somewhat unrelated note, did anyone attend Con no Baka back in November? It was held at the Double Tree. The con was great the first couple of days, but then the cancelled Sunday because they didn't have enough people showing up to make any profits, and then someone stole all of the registration money or something like that ... crazy.

I'm going, and commuting from Oakville. Boy, will the people on the GO Train be weirded out...they're probably going to see a girl in a Sasuke costume dragging a wig around because she doesn't want to wear it or in a blue sailor suit with purple contacts. I'm definitely going on Sunday, and maybe Saturday. This is actually my first year going to a con, although I found out about Anime North in Grade Four...aka three years ago.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.
A friend of mine had to ride the bus to con last year while crossplaying as Yuna from FFX. XD
He got some strange looks, but meh!
Saturday is always the busiest day, but Sunday has all of the sweet sale prices in the dealer's room.

Ooo, hope to see everyone there. :D I have never tried the hotel before because a friend's mother lived in Toronto, so we stayed there for the 3 nights. It was fun, though we didn't do too much convention events. Attended the dance though.
Be sure to try and find me! I'll be in the artist alley. :D

I was planning to go to Con no Baka but it was expensive and I just didn't want to waste my money going. Is that what happened because it wasn't what I heard. ^^;; Basically the whole thing was a huge disaster because they didn't organize it properly. Guests weren't coming, the cosplay hall awards were cheap, events weren't held properly...it was a huge mess. There was a lot of dealer arguments too because of deals they never heard of. They tried to make up for it by giving out "discount tickers" for another con, yet that con never approved of such a thing. ^^;;

The event was poorly organised, but they did give as many people as they could a full refund, and those who missed the refund got gift certificates for various anime and comic stores in the area, so it wasn't too bad.
I didn't hear about the money being stolen until after the con, so it may have been a rumor.

The bus...*shudder* Meh, but still, it's the GO Train...and I'll be wearing a ton of bandages...and those weird black straps he wears too. But it's all right...I hope. I'm glad I don't have to go on the subway too though...apparently the con is going to be near Union GO Station. I usually go from Union to ST George on the subway and then walk to school.

I actually find subways are better than buses. Buses are too bumpy and they get stuck in traffic. Subways get there faster, even if they do make annoying squealing noises between stops. I was reading Howl's moving castle one day, and I was going to Union, but I got so absorbed I missed my stop and ending up at Davisville XP That was way up the line, but I got out of school early in the first place so I managed to catch my normal train.

I'll be going this year! It's my first time going to any con, so I'm pretty excited. ^_^ I live in Toronto already so I don't have to worry about a hotel room but commuting back and forth is gonna be a pain... then again, I'm kind of used to it already with the 1:15h long commute to work every morning. :X
I'll be going as Nami from One Piece, in her Skypiea costume (the yellow t-shirt version). ^^ I wanted to do something more elaborate but I just don't have the time or resources right now... but the costume will be fun anyway. ^_^

The DBZ videos of 2k5 I saw tended to just be straight fight scenes to rockish music, maybe with a few cuts as DBZ fights tend to be kick punch kick splat, talk for 2 episodes, sudden kick...(The Namek saga was hugely bad for that ^^)
Though I didn't watch that many AMVs in 2k4 as I was distracted by the pocky table, and planning how to get within 4 meters of it without being crushed by pocky crazed mobs.
...We seriously did not ever get close to it...

I'm making a massive pilgrimage next year, were camping in the lot, were getting trip permits that allow us to sleep in our respective vehicles, me and anywhere between 20 and 30 other Anime freaks, all we really need to buy will be tickets and parking, and were set, and not convention centre parking I dont think, The organizers were foggy when My Brother called. but yeah, its only like 5 hours away, but its a pilgrimage with this many folks.

Costume change *dun dun dahh*
I now have to go as Mary Weather Hargreaves (or Merryweather, which ever it is.) from Count Cain because my significant other refused to wear the Xaki costume T_T. But I only agreed under the condition he wears it next year ;D so he'll have a year to get used to it/try to talk me out of it(which will NOT happen.)
So in conclusion we are going as Cain and Mary, blarg.

I know what you mean ... about buying stuff. I'm buying all the cool stuff I think will be snatched up on Friday and then buying all my main stuff on Sunday. :D

I have decided on the last minute that I could actually go to Anime North (I kinda lost my job, yeah... ^^; ) I'll be taking the bus there if I do go (everything will be confirmed on Tuesday).

I couldn't go this year cause I had to work. :(
I can't really afford to lose my job plus I could always go next year.

They have the schedule of events posted on their site now. They are having a pool party, and a late night party. Sounds like it will be really fun!
I have finally finished my outfit. Even though I rushed, it still turned out so-so. I just hope that everyone else in my group finishes soon. I love the fact that we all "match" this year. Who knows, maybe some of us will see each other there, even though we have no idea who everyone is. SO if you see a group of girls dressed as the girls from Sakura Taisen, I'm probably one of them!
Anyway road trip here I come! Watch out Anime North!

My friend who lives in TO picked up all the badges for myself and my friends today, so we don't have to wait in line tomorrow! But I'll be there for all three days, but I am only cosplaying in Saturday.

Ok, i think i'm going to go on Saturday (whee I can't wait!!!). The only thing is I'm not familiar with that part of Toronto. Can anybody give me general directions if i'm coming up the QEW from St. Catherine's? thanks

Ah ... another great Anime North come and gone. :D
I had a great time, and I probably saw some of you there, but didn't even know it. :P
If you saw a guy wearing a Desert Punk cap and a Stereo Sound Studio t-shirt on Saturday ... that was me. :D

Well so here are my thoughts on AN 2006. It was fun. The AMV's were great. But I was a little let down from the past few years. I noticed that orignality of the past years was not there. Hell unless you were dressed as someone from Bleach or Naruto or the girls from FFX I doubt that 90% of the attendees would have known who you were. I observed this from many of the people I talked to who were feeling the same way. The vibe was not the same. Did it suck? No. But I hope that next years con is a little more exciting then this years. And the sales? Yeah. You were lucky to find any on Sunday. So as I look forward to next years AN, I shall prepare for The Canadian Nation Fan Expo which features CNAnime. See ya there!

Yes, I found that cosplay variety was limited this year.
And the dealer's room was also pretty lame this year.
The Beguiling's booth was great, as always. :D
All manga US cover price, buy 4, get one free ... awesome deals.
I love that store.

It was fun, although I can't pass judgement because it was my first year. I missed cosplay chess and the KOTOKO concert because of my best friend's sister who 'accidentally' spent half an hour deep in the basement of our school. I still got KOTOKO's autograph though, unlike the guy who runs our anime club. If anyone saw a girl going around in a Fruits Basket uniform with black hair, that was me. And my retarded costume. I'm hopefully going to have a better costume next year. YOu're right, the cosplays weren't that original. Tons of Naruto characters, Chiis, FF characters and BLeach shinigamis. @_@ I swear, they were mass producing costumes...I saw the stand!
On another note, is anyone going to the Halloween Party? I know I am...and I'm skipping the school dance for it. ^^; Ah well, never liked the school dances anyways...too crowded and hot, plus I cannot dance to save my life. I'm going as a gothic lolita.

This is the convention I go to every year with my friend! It's so much fun and it's really big. The Dealers room has lots of stuff. I buy things that I don't need all the time because some of the stuff is just to cool or cute to pass up. Never cosplayed though.

Anime North is (in my opinion) the best anime con in Ontario. =3
Not sure if I'm going to be at AN '07, though, as I have no money and may be in a different province. =P

That would suck. I hope you can go.
I'm wondering... is their cosplaying like an unwritten rule or something? I mean will someone feel out of place if they dont do it or is it totally chill?

i may make an attempt to go this year, i work weekends so unless the office i work in sells out before then, i'll have to ask my friend to tell me about it when he gets back from it this year.
okay everyone say it with me

Cosplay certainly isn't necessary. I've never done cosplay for AN and I've always had a good time. =D

i wont do it, i refuse to cosplay! my friend i was mentioning was supposed to go as spike last year...don't think he did though, never saw a pic or heard him mention it.
i take two hours to get ready in the morning, there is no way i'd put effort into cosplaying, i'd never make it there.

Hey that's cheating! you can't just go as yourself. Don't worry lots of people cosplay at AN. Lots of them get glompled. I've seen it with my very two eyes. I plan on cosplaying for the very first time this year. Start off with some easy character.

I've been going for 2 years [this year will be #3!!! Kyaaa!!!~], but it seems as if the price is going up every year, it's $50 CDN this year no?
I'll probably go with my BJD and perhaps cosplay... But I might just end up going Gothic Lolita again, like every other year... -.-;;

Yeah, what the hell?
That's WAY too much. It's $40 for pre-reg before March, but still, that's really expensive.
I am now glad I'm not going this year.

It's going to be my 3rd year too!!! I agree. The price is WAY too much! I mean they should give discout to thoughs who cosplay or something. Does anyone know the rates for opening their own tables? Is it allowed for me to sell my own comic there cause I see people selling their own comics.
penguinminor
01-08-2007, 03:36 PM
You have to pre-reg before you can get a table in the Artists Alley.
Registration for the Artists Alley hasn't opened yet, but, if you go to the Anime North website (http://www.animenorth.com), you can email the Alley coordinator with any questions.
I think it's kind of unfair to have artists pay for pre-reg and a table. =|

01-08-2007, 04:48 PM
I agree. I have a friend who wants to set up a table but is broke because she spent all her money on a new tablet.>_> For 400$ I would expect the thing to draw for me.
RKambereyes
01-08-2007, 05:18 PM
And then with all that money spent there's not a good chance you'll make a profit with your sales unless your a really good artists or if you've opened up in the dealers room.
Always buy on the Sunday. That's my motto. Saturday go for the events and buy the things you know are going to be sold out Sunday. And on Sunday, buy everything for cheap and bargain. I always try and bargain. I managed to get the Backgammon Saiyuki art book for $40 when it was originally $90. Well I bought it Saturday so the price dropped to $65. I just annoyed the guy to hell so he gave it to me for $40.
