There's one on 27-28th May in London.

emmavieceli
03-18-2006, 09:20 AM
we have more and more events in the UK to look forward to^_^

There is of course the London MCM Expo with its anime village in May:
www.londonexpo.com

And Minami is on this weekend in Southampton - as we speak!
Others include:
Amecon, Ayacon, Tomodachi, Tokonatsu, Auchinawa, fuyucon and more no doubt!

And of course there's always the London anime club that runs on the first sunday of every month - it's great fun, like a mini convention in a pub^_^

London's lucky; I'm always reading about conventions there. My closest cons are Manchester and Nottinghamshire, because I live in Bradford... and while there is something called Nomi Con there, you have to be at least 18 to join and it's really just an anime screening + beer. I probably won't be allowed/have the chance to go to any kind of anime meeting, outside the net, until I'm at least 18 - no fair!

There is one in london near the docklands. It was quite small it was called anime expo they have a web site but i can't remember what it is. but it was great fun there was lots of cosplaying and stuff.:p i think they have a manga week at somepoint as well.

emmavieceli
03-18-2006, 09:25 AM
emmsiebella, that's the expo you're talking about ^_^
The anime village keeps growing! they have the voice actors of naruto and kodachi there this time, plus the usual stands, cosplay competition and artists alley. Good fun and pretty cheap too - not including what you spend on toys! ^_~

Amecon is in leicester with an age admission of 16 I think.....don't quote me though - i haven't got my ticket yet!! ;^_^

I'm 15 at the moment. ^^;; But still, Leicester is way far out. I'd have an easier (though by no means actually easy) time convincing my parents to pay, drive, and accompany me (and maybe my friends) to the ones in Manchester or Nottinghamshire. Maybe as an extra birthday treat... but then again I am already going to see a Jo Brand at the Bradford Alhambra on my birthday. *Le sigh*

emmavieceli
03-18-2006, 09:42 AM
get your parents to bring you to the Expo then ^_^
The beauty of it is that it has something for everyone and you can just turn up for the day, wander around and leave again - it doesn't have to be a full weekend convention. A nice day trip for everyone^_~

yups. Emmsiebelle, if you come this time, you will have to come say hi at the sweatdrop table ^_~

the beauty of the Expo is that it's not just anime, so there's something for everyone! My mum and Dad even came along to see Andy Serkis (gollum from lord of the rings) last time! hehehe

WHOA. There are actually cons in Bradford??? (The site's typical Yorkshire, though - Beer, beer and more beer! XD)

I'm... trying to force- uh, persuade my friends to come with me to the Expo (it'll be my first con!... I hope. >_>)... seems like a good way to abuse my study leave, anyway!

You may want to look into local clubs (or perhaps start your own): http://www.anime-europe.com/clubs/index.php

Its a bit early, and we certainly aren't in a position to announce a venue yet, but Aya (the UK's largest event dedicated to anime, manga and Japanese pop culture) may well be closer to you when it next takes place, but that isn't scheduled until 2007.

Yep. I've been on the Aya committee for about five years and ran the registration counters at the last convention.

I've just got back from the small Minami convention in Southampton, where I spent the whole of Friday on the registration desk, meeting all the anime and manga fans as they arrived.

Glad you had a good time. We're hoping for something much bigger with more event streams for the next one.

I've got a couple of hundred more snaps to upload into the Anime Europe (http://www.anime-europe.com) convention photo gallery over the next few days myself, plus some of the photos from the cosplay shoot should start to appear on Cosplay UK (http://www.cosplay.co.uk) at the weekend.

I heard there were plans for a con in Northern England, probably Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Did they fall through? I'd love there to be a con up here, as getting down south, or up to Glasgow can be pricy.

There are rumours of a small 200 person event in Hull later this year (more details as I get them), but I'm not aware of something specifically for anime and manga being held in Newcastle.

GracieLizzy
03-21-2006, 06:48 AM
Hmmm Hull's not as difficult. The only vaugely anime & manga meet up here is the JapaNE (http://japane.net/) club, which covers anime & manga as well as other aspects of Japanese culture (it's pretty cool actually, unfortunately I've been too busy to go recently). Also there's those Ottakar's manga nights that seem to be happening across the country, I'm going to the Sunderland one... which is the closest thing to an anime con ever planned to go to so far.

If you're looking for anime-related events in the UK, visit the Britanime website's events section:

While you're at it, if you're looking for any resources of anime-related things in the UK, the rest of the website is ultra useful!

Of course, if you go to town you can buy manga in a couple of shops (waterstones, whsmiths has a couople sometimes, and this cult tv/comics shop somewhere near sunwin house) and there's anime sold in all sorts of media shops... there must be a hidden fanbase somewhere!

I once picked up a second hand gravitiation OS album in that gaming shop at the bottom of the street with toymasters on (not gamestation, t'other one), too!

chensterrain
03-26-2006, 03:06 PM
the cult comics shop... you mean 'Where the Wild Things Are'? I always avoid that place (and the owner/s remind me too much of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons XD) ... Bradford could do a little better, I think. There used to be this GREAT anime shop near Sunwin House about five or six years ago, but they closed it down! *sob* But yeah, Game Trading usually has secondhand animestuffs, which is cool. XD

(I gotta admit, though, I only ever buy manga / anime in Leeds. I can't stay away from Travelling Man! And there's that other one in the Merrion Centre or whatever it's called, which has rarer stuff (Advent Children wallscrolls etc.), but they're really expensive... >_>)

*hijacks topic with Bradford-talk XD* (sorry, topic creator!)

franchan
03-26-2006, 03:08 PM
Yeah I do.

I buy my manga from a mixture of travelling man in leeds, forbidden planet in leeds, waterstones, and charity shops. ^^ My anime msotly comes from hmv. Everytime I see someone looking at stuff there I wanna say hi and talk about anime but I'm too nervous.

Ooo, did you know the first british/irish RSOM competion had a runner up from bradford? She's called Roxanne Chen.

And on another note: anyone know anything for Cardiff?

There should be more in the North-east. That way I wouldn't get bored during summer!!

The other day I was wistfully daydreaming of a "HokutōCon" (Hokutō (北東) is Northeast in Japanese), I was even looking at the event planner, and floor plan on the Newcastle Gosforth Park Marriot Hotel (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/nclgf?WT_Ref=mi_left) site thinking how nice a con venue it could make... shame I don't have thousands of pounds or the organisational skills to organise one myself :(

And on another note: anyone know anything for Cardiff?

There doesn't seem to be anything in Wales either :( the only Welsh con of any kind I know of is a Doctor Who one in Swansea (Regenerations (http://www.regenerations.co.uk/))... Actually I'd like to go to one of those one day too, and I'm much lucky with Doctor Who conventions than I am with Anime ones as there is one called Dimensions (http://www.tenthplanet.co.uk/dimensions/index.htm) held every year in Stockon-on-Tees. That's a lot easier for me to get too than any of the UK's anime conventions.

Sorry this is off topic!! But that place looks like where I had my sixth form christmas dinner dance.

That would be a great place. What about the Telewest/Metero Radio Arena? (I'm not sure which it is any more!) That place is pretty big and would do for a good place. Plus its not far from the city centre so more people would have access to it.

It's where my Sixth Form dinner dance was as well ^_^ one of the reasons I though of it actually. I looked up the Sunderland Marriot too but it doesn't have the floor space.

The Arena would be a really good place as it is big, though it would mean they'd be no seprate rooms, unless they can section it off. Also if that Super Casino comes to the Northeast it could bring a convention centre with it they said on the news the other day, though I forsee that going to Blackpool.

LadyTanyata
03-29-2006, 08:38 AM
At the Arena they manage to separate all the universities off from each other when the schools take the ALevel students there to get prospectus'.

I agree with you. It would be great if they could go to the Northeast but in all likelihood it probably won't.

There's this big thing in Ottakars to try and promote tokyopop more and more, so most are planning on having a manga evening.

I'm planning on going to the London MCM Expo this May and it'll be the first one I get to go to, but it's gonna cost a total of £40 for me and my siblings to go. It's quite a lot of money to spend on a day if you're not sure what you're gonna be doing. Can anyone fill me in?

Depends on the con.
I think the london expo covers loads of things like star trek and anime such (haven't been so someone feel free to trash this xP)
The only one I went to was ayacon, it had to massive dealer rooms where you could sell or buy new manga, anime, just everything related.
There was a masquarade where people went on stage and showcased their costumes. There were also screening all over the campus of anime shows and movies. At night there were j-pop parties and a japanese band called Blood preformed.
There is so much going on at a con, It's totally worth it.
The next one I'm going to isn't until August and is £40 for three days attendence - and I can't wait

I probably be cosplaying as lenne from FFX-2 since I'm making the costume for it for a con. You don't have to cosplay at all, it's just a fun thing to take part in.
