So, what do you think? Who is the greatest manga-ka ever? Why? Is it the artwork? Storyline? Something else altogether?
Personally, I'm a fan of all things CLAMP, Kaori Yuki and Naoko Takeuchi. CLAMP because everything about them is good (characters, plot, artwork), Kaori Yuki because she's just awesome and who doesn't love the revolutionary Sailor Moon? :D

If you talk about all time it just have to be Ozamu Tezuka. Thanks to him you all still reading and watching anime. And not just that, the series he have done are nothing short of amazing.

Masakazu Katsura, mangaka of I''s, Video Girl AI and his latest project Zetman. This guy knows how to draw the most beautiful girls and the most gratifying panty shots.
I''s in particular was a great read. I finished it a year or two back when MangaProject was just finishing up scanslating the title.

I would say Kentaro Miura because his artwork is improving as Berserk continues. The stroyline will keep you hooked even after 30 tanks.Berserk has themes of fate vs freewill, how far would you go for your ambition, and betrayal. There is even claims that Miura has enough ideas for 20 more tanks.

ken akamatsu is the best, i think. All three of his series are great, where the only other artist who i own more than one series of is clamp, and i found that while chobits was great, wish and clamp detectives let me down a bit.

I gotta hand it to CLAMP, face it, everything they've ever released kicks ass. Especially xxxHOLiC :P And theres the older ones like CCS, MKR, etc.. =D
Rumiko Takahashi SUCKS!!!!!

Rumiko Takahashi SUCKS!!!!!
WHAT? well....if you think that Angelic Layer, Chobits, Clover, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles are good mangas, it's your opinion....
But Naoki Urasawa, is the greatest mangaka nowadays, excluding Happy!, all of his works are MARVELOUS

I would say either Dr. Ten or Kaori Yuki. Dr. Ten can convert you to anything. But all of Kaori Yuki's works are just mind-benders. You never know what to expect from her except that there will be something morbid to it. I want more of her wandering prince series as he wanders through the twisted fairy tales.

Rumiko Takahashi SUCKS!!!!! :mad:AnimeDudde, that post is flame bait... please do not post like that in the future, as it breaks at least one of this forum's rules. I've quoted one of them below, from this thread (http://messageboard.tokyopop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3).5) Please refrain from posting "nasty," "unhelpful" or "snippy" comments. We will remove inappropriate posts as needed.
I disagree that Rumiko Takahashi sucks, by the way. Oh, and I think the greatest Manga-ka of all time is Lindsay Cibos... the author/creator of Peach Fuzz. ^^

I am quite partial to Tanemura Arina works - not saying that her artstyle is the best but there is something about it that pulls you in... Along with her Kawahara Kazune, Yazawa Ai, and Takaya Natsuki.

My favorite Manga-ka are Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) and Takeshi Obata (artist of Hikaru no Go and Death Note).
In terms of story, Its very close between Arakawa and Kishimoto. Both have created exellent stories and amazing characters, but Arakawa probably just slightly wins out because FMA is a bit more serious in nature, and deals with many things and lessons in reguards to things like life, death, human nature, etc. (at least, thats how I see it).
But in terms of artwork, Obata is my idol, not only because of his incredibly talent, but also because of his range. He can go from the simple, light-hearted tone of Hikaru No Go to the dark and serious realism of Death Note effortlessly. It is my hope that someday I can be as great and diverse as he is.

Yumi Tamura, author Basara, Wild COM and Chicago.
Although Narumi Kakinouchi is also very good. Juline and Vampire Miyu and Yui are especially awesome.
*sigh* I wish someone could pick up the vampire series and finish it after Ironcat went out.

I'd say Osamu Tezuka. Not just because he's the father/god/supreme ruler of manga, but because he's able to do so many different types of stories and do them amazingly well.

Naoko Takeuchi is legendary. I mean, who DOESN'T love Sailor Moon? But I also really like the artwork of Yu Watase and Miwa Ueda (the creator of Peach Girl.) I wish I was as good as them. :(

I think Osamu Tezuka's the only viable answer here. He not only created the different genres that most of the manga-ka listed here use, but had a vital role in the creation of manga as a medium.

Kazuya Minekura. I have never seen artwork that beautiful and the other reason for selecting her is the characters she can create.
And also, I really like Kaori Yuki. And again, the reason is the characters. I just hope somebody would pick up Yuki's "Boys next door".

Takeuchi deserves to be put upon a pedestal above all others for her magical girl revolution, but I'd have to say either Watase or Clamp. I love all three so much, how can I choose!!?? @_@ Kyoko Hikawa deserves to be mentioned as well...

Difficult topic, but because manga is how it is as we know it today thanks to Osamu Tezuka, it has to be him, the greatest ever.
Want to know more about him check this official site:

Wow! No votes for Miyazaki and Nausicaa? sigh.... Viz special edition is one of the best things to come out in the states EVER in my opinion. it's an amazing piece of art and literature, of course I would have to throw in that Tezuka is called "The God of Manga" in Japan for a reason. And for good measure I have to throw in

 Oooooh hardy hard hard hard... well I guess kinda Osma Tezuka because he basically created modern manga really, but apart from him it's a hard choice between Hayao Miyazaki, Ken Akamatsu and Misako Rocks... I know that may not be a very good answer but you can't expect us to choose one!!!

I'm not sure I've ever posted here before  How odd... Anyhow, favorite...
CLAMP is good, but I don't love all their stuff. Top of my list would be Kazuya Minekura, writer and artist for Saiyuki, Bus Gamer and Wild Adaptor. I love the plots and the art. Both are absolutely amazing.

This really is a thread of personal opinion. Many manga-kas excel in certain things and lack in others, etc., etc.
However.. my personal favorite is Yamane Ayano... someone else mentioned her on this thread earlier.I love her work so much. Also, I really like the style of KAzusa Takashima, manga-ka for Wild Rock ^^; You can tell I'm a yaoi fan. Anyway, I think their art styles are fantastic.
Takeshi Obata is love. Plain and simple. Anyone who creates the likeness of L is worthy of my ultimate praise @_@;

In terms of storyline, I would have to say either Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist), Kaori Ozaki (Immortal Rain), and Tsugumi Ohba (Death Note).
In terms of art, I would say Kaori Ozaki (Immortal Rain), CLAMP (too many to name!), and Takeshi Obata (Hikaru No Go and Death Note).
But I also like Amy Kim Ganter (Sorcerers & Secretaries), Kiyohiko Azuma (Azumanga Daioh! and Yotsuba&!) and Svetlana Chmakova (Dramacon).
It's too hard to pick just one! (>_<)

Akira Toriyama and Masami Kurumada, without these 2, the anime/manga industry worldwide wouldn´t be as big as it is right now, both of their signature works were broadcasted worlwide and if it weren´t for Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) probably Dragon Ball wouldn´t even have been broadcasted at all...

CLAMP! Cuz they rock, their art is phenomenal and the stories are just too good to be true! w00t! It just kinda sorta sucks when their stories are turned into anime cuz it's either too girly and/or the storyline gets screwed up....but they do that to most manga..so...yeah...

I have three favorites. Sorachi Hideaki is a great storyteller, although his art lacks. He has great skill in how he plans out his manga. Katsura Hoshino has great art, and makes great stories.
Finally, the makers of Rhysmyth, not just because I've spoken with them on TPF, but because they know how to make a highly original story their own. They've broken the barrier by creating a fresh idea.

I don't know if I would call them 'The Greatest Manga-ka Ever', but I love everything by Mizuki Hakase and Setona Mizushiro. I think that they both have gripping storylines and good art.
I'd get my hands on some Tezuka, but his art style doesn't appeal to me. Is his storytelling really fantastic? I can deal with weird art if the story and characters are good.

I think his storytelling is top-notch. He's just about the only person I've read who breaks the fourth wall and doesn't make me roll my eyes.
His art style in terms of characters might seem a bit rudimentary compared to more modern day manga-ka but just look at his fully fleshed-out and detailed backgrounds, his inventive and intuitive panel layouts--he plain rocks the socks :D
