On 4 September 2006, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray off the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia while filming a segment for his daughter Bindi Irwin's underwater documentary called "Deadly Sea Creatures"

Yeah he did, but of all things a sting ray. I think he would have prefered going out while fighting off a pack of crocodiles or some huge behemoth mammal or fish.

Crikey! Bet no one saw this coming...
I still can't get over how he died... It's like... 1:1 000 000 to die by getting stung through the heart by a giant stingray barb.
The media's been pretty good about it. They haven't been harrassing his family and giving them space.
They're going to have to change the ad for Australian Zoo though. Bindi (Steve's daughter) says "You might see my dad there too..." in it. I feel so sorry for the girl... She looked up to her dad so much.
Rest In Peace Steve Irwin. He lived a short but fufilled life and experieced things in his short 40 years that would take others a lifetime and died doing what he loved best.

That's really sad :(...I've always like Steve Irwin for taking risks in the name of education. Though what really pisses me off is that on german TV (from which I saw the news today) they kept emphasising the time where he fed a crocodile whilst holding his baby, as if implying that it was his own fault. I find it hideous when the media judges the action of someone who died in an accident.

If you haven't heard already, Steve Irwin died today on the 4th of September, on the Batt Reef, near Cairns. As a sign of respect for the Australian cultural icon, please place a turtle (tu) at the start of your MSN name, and forward this message on to others
It's been going around Australian forums. Half my MSN contact list have the turtle up.

Turtle? Wha? Isn't that a bit, ah, morbidly stupid in the same way as those idiots sticking up an (R) in their name after the septembet 11th bombings?
Eh, maybe I'm jsut being cinical. I guess if it makes folk feel better...

He's THE Aussie Icon. It's just to pay our respects. Kinda lame since it's only a turtle emote but it's the thought that counts. A lot of people are actually truly sad over his death (referring to a discussion over in an Australian forum)

Eh, I see. Kinda. I'm still in a sort of "I still don't quite grasp the fact he's dead" stage. Suppose when you spend hours on a chat server with a bunch of Australians making jokes about him you do kinda feel a bit wierd when something like that actually happens.

>.< I feel like I've lost my best friend all over again...I know I didn't know him personally, but I'll always remember him. He was my favorite guy in the world, right next to Robin Williams. After Darwin's tortoise passed away, it was almost like the whole house was a tomb here. Now it's like a huge mausoleum. Everyone in my family misses him...even my very spiteful, I-hate-the-world little brother. He's in the other room watching the movie now and crying.

We'll miss you, Steve. Hopefully you're in a better place now, with all manner of dangerous and poisonous mythical creatures—all of which are patiently waiting for you to walk up behind them while you yell excitedly at a camera, before lifting up their tails to prod curiously at their genitalia.

I thought his show was hilarious, but I wasn't surprised to hear that he died. Messing with dangerous animals can kill you, ya know? But the irony of it all is that stingrays are supposed to be calm creatures.

We talked about that on my radio show today (see Ep. 8 blog); and I disagree. I always thought he would die either falling down the stairs at his house or choking on a sandwich. You know, something non-animal related. Seriously, I'm not joking.

Yeah, I mean, look at David Attenborough; he's been all over the world with all sorts of animals since the days of black-and-white TV. Not doing quite as many dangerous things, true, but an accident could have happened at any time.
I dunno, maybe Jeff Corwin will be the next Steve Irwin.

The keywords: dangerous animals.
See, people don't seem to understand. They're called wild and dangerous animals for a reason. You're never in control so don't think you are. It doesn't even matter if you raise one from birth...there is still a large possibility that it will turn on you. Just look at the Sigfriend and Roy white tiger incident. And that wasn't a freak accident either, because stuff like that happens to owners of wild animals all the time. One random day their pet lion attacks them or someone else and in the end they're like, "Fluffy never acts like that. I don't know what happened!"
I do: Fluffy is a wild animal.
It only takes one thing to trigger a wild animal's natural instinct. Which is to attack and/or kill.

lol oh i know huh? i mean i have no plans of dying & would love to be able to LIVE doing what i love but don't know about dying while doing something i love. wouldn't that be too ironic? just dying in your sleep during old age is the most comfortable & painless way to go isn't it? although maybe i want to say goodbye before i dye. but then again i'll be afraid if i knew i was dying & would cry for sadness because i don't want to depart with my loved ones. anyway...

Not necessarily true; we have a feral cat that we let out into the streets at night; a good ol' wild street cat. And he's incredibly good-natured and gentle with kids. If they bother him, he either taps him with his paws or leaves. But its true any animal can turn on you.

That's very true. I remember one time I was just watching TV, petting my dog. I guess I was petting him a little too hard because just snapped and bit my arm. He's not a big dog either and he's not the aggressive type so I was very shocked, but I guess over the years I've come to believe as him being part of the family that I just sort of forgot that he is an animal. I guess that's why people are always so suprised when their dogs bite their kids, and the always say the same thing. "He/she has never done this before", "He/she was always so well behaved", ect.

My friend's Dad raised a dog since birth and one day it just turned on him and sank its teeth into his arm. Now my friend's Dad has a huge scar from where the dog bit him. And the dog was even trained too. Anything can happen with animals. But the cute/funny thing is...their rottweiler tried to protect him when the other dog went ballastic.

And did anyone hear about South Park mocking Irwin in a new episode? The episode showed Irwin at a Halloween party in Hell talking to Satan. Irwin had a stingray tail poking out of his chest. Actually, some guy even dressed up as him for Halloween...again with a bloody stingray tail sticking out of his chest. People are pretty pissed about this.

It's weird, when Steve Irwin was at Satan's party he had the stingray sticking out of his chest, but in the South Park universe they showed him being killed by a spinning helicopter blade in an earlier episode.
