Their hair isn't very long, for one thing. The main ingredient is HAIRSPRAY. Aqua Net works good. Layered/short hair works best with it. Long hair is nearly impossible to properly spike; believe me, I've tried.

Well, there is hair-cement; it can take foot-long hair and spike it right up. Awesome stuff; you can get it at any Sally's.

For that traditonal Robert Smith (http://www.thecurefanclub.com/robgoth.jpg), Daniel Ash (http://www.wiredpsyche.com/megan/DanielA.gif) , Siouxsie Sioux (http://www.wiredpsyche.com/megan/sioux.gif) look, (which todays Visual Kei got some of their inspiration from) we still use focus 21 splash (http://www.wiredpsyche.com/megan/focus.jpg). Do not comb hair. Stand upside down while hair is damp, blasting with a high power blow dryer and spray, tease hair up with fingers, pull and yank and spray the crap out of it for desired effects. This works for fine to medium hair textures. Using egg whites works to stiffen thicker, tougher hair, (great for mohawks and streamers) but that tends to smell. >____<***
When all else fails, there's always foam art. :D

Well, it depends on the hair type too. I mean: My hair woudln't stand/ Or rather: they would but for a short time. Or I'd have to sue wo much EVERYTHING there woeuldn't be any hair visible under it -_-

Well, I can't be of much help here. I've only "spiked" my hair once, using cheap $1 gel. It worked well though, kept my hair standing on end for the whole 8 hours I was using it. My hair's only 1.5-2 inches long though :p.

Glue! Normal Elmer's glue would do the trick. That's how one kid in my class used to get his hair to stand straight up (in spikes too).

I don't think he wants a permanent solution for sticking his hair up. :O

When i had big spikes i mainly used to use Dax hair wax (the red one), in conjuction with a LOT of backcombing. I also used water soluble glue on a couple of occasions. Extra hold hair spray should do it though.

Glue gel/Hair cement. Of course, even then, you have to hold it for however many minutes depending on your hair.

I often backcomb my hair... Um, it depends on whether you want it really spiky or just big, Robert Smith-esque, I suppose.

Elmer's Glue works wonders, and it's fairly easy to wash it out too. Just make sure you don't use the quick drying/no drip stuff because not only can you not get it out of the bottle, but it's harder to use too. I use to use Elmer's Glue in high school and it worked fine. If your hair is too long though you might have some difficulty.

Daym LEC use some proper english once in a while :p
I say everyone should shave their heads. But if you really feel the need to spike it up... I'd say some decent hairspray of some sort. It keeps it up without making it look wet.
