Wait, what? You mean we can't post comments on peoples blogs or profiles any more? Self destructive, that.

yeh I noticed that, I've sent a few messages to some people and none have replied. For a moment I thought they just didn't want to reply because I was new but know I know why. How do you make fans then? T.T T.T T.T T.T

Oh, I see. You have to set it to "allow non-fans to make comments" in your profile. And you can review comments folk make on your profile ebfore they go public too for some reason. What happened to freedom of speech?

Its called privacy and anit-flammatory. That way only your friends will comment and don't have to deal with flames.
If someone posts a comment filled with profanity, you can get rid of it. But then, I could give a damn about freedom of speech, so it works for me. People use FOS as an excuse for being rude. That's about it.

No, it doesn't.
Maybe he doesn't want criticism. Maybe he's happy with his work ads it is and isn't interested in improving. Maybe his artowrk is a touchy subject and doesn't want stupid comments on it. There are many reasons.
Aratos

Exactly.
And freedom of speech as an excuse for being rude? That's the point. As a firm believer in FOS, I accept that. In the same way as I accept onionchan has a right to exist despite the fact it's so disgustingly abhorent it makes me want to scoop my eyes out. That's the joy of freedom.

Just because you post something on the net doesn't mean you want everyone and anyone posting comments. And you don't have to. Freedom goes both ways. If I can edit profanity of of my comments, I will. I don't want people who use are rude and profane to comment my stuff. I reserve the right to discriminate against them at will.

Interesting perspective. My point of view is this: I post what I want, where I want unless there are rules set down stopping me. If someone doesn't like my comment, they can either block me after it's made or they can choose to ignore me. Pre-emptively saying "only my friends can post comments" on the other hand is just stupid.
Besides, if y'can't take criticism then y'shouldn't be on the internet.

You shouldn't be on the internet if you are worried about getting your feelings hurt. No one cares because the internet isn't serious business.

Really. What about the children who view the site? What about people from other cultures? Older people who don't know what everyone else "should know"?
I think that people can be criticizing without being harsh.
That being said, I believe the default should be to allow all users to comment and then have the option of letting only friends post on your profile and pages.

There is a thin line between criticism and flam. The problem is that line is on differnt levels for everybody. when somebody says that color sucks (pardon my french) alot of us wont get hurt but there are some who cant handle it. But i agree with Aratos. The internet isnt a place that considders feelings. If you dont want comments from people you dont know then dont post it online.

True, that would be the general internet, but shouldn't the community on Tokyopop be different?

That's why there are options on the internet like only allowing your friends to comment, that way you can share your work with friends and not allow everyone and anyone to view it.
The internet has more than one option to it, you know. There are many different kinds of people in this world and many different ways to use the net.
Basically what some of you are saying is that we should discriminate against anyone who doesn't fit into your idea of what an internet user should be, and you're stereotyping, judging, generalising and labelling people who do not want criticism on their work without any idea at all of why. (Ooh, big words)
It takes all kinds.

What I'm saying is, if you move to a country with a different culture to your own, you don't try and force your culture onto it, you join in with the one already there. And you definately don't upset the natives. The internet is the same. In this case, we're talking about eh culture that has existed since its formation, and the natives are the folk who started here before the sudden insurgence of immigrants. And the folk that have realised the facts and become good normal citizens. If you're going to use the internet, you should either play by the rules or gtfo and go somewhere else. Somewhere that, whilst online, isn't somewhere worth mentioning. Becasue those who won't follow the rules don't deserve to be allowed to play with the big kids, see?

Well, there's a difference between criticism and being an *******.
"You're anatomy is slightly off, and I think that green hair would look nicer. Also, pay attention while drawing feet. You're probably a long ways off of getting published"
Is one thing.
"OMG YOU SUCK ****HEAD. SUCK MY *****"
Is another. There's no need for profanity online or in real life, and if someone says that stuff to you, you should block them, or edit their comments. If you don't like something, say it in a well composed manner, and you can say anything you'd like. Just don't be an idiot about it. Polite mocking [AnimeJump has some hilarious user images for this sort of thing, including a GREAT word filter :) Naruto becomes "Nate the Ninja".], negative criticism, can all be handled well. Just be mature about it to some degree. Yeah, it's the internet, but that doesn't mean you can do anything.
In most forums, if you're a tool, you'll get banned.

That was our point. Tokyopop have got it into their heads that blocking literally everyone by default is a better method of doing things, though. That's what we take offense to.
Shouldn't edit comments, though. Delete them, yes. Edit, no. Doing that jsut makes you out to be an idiot.

Mind you, you can go in and chose to allow strangers to comment on your journal, if you want to.
However, I really see nothing wrong with setting up your journal to be friends-only. This is a common thing on Livejournal, although with LJ the posts are also private. Still, I think this is a good feature on TP for younger users who might not like wierd, internet strangers talking to them, and just want to use the site's services, or for people who prefer just to converse with select people. Given the large number of younger users using the site, this might be a good idea.
It's perfectly fair, as it's their blogs, and their choices to make :) It's not like TP is enforcing this. It's not hard to change your settings.

I mostly just meant adding some kind of word censor screen, to edit out stuff.... on some forums, they do this with swear words, or with some taboo topics [ie- on the Oni Press Website, there was a word filter for Star Wars at one time. Some folks just talked about it too much], or for humourous reasons [the aforementioned Nate the Ninja]
Changing comments like that is crazy, and I don't think that kind of editing'ld be a good idea in hindsite :)

Not to give anyone ideas, but notice how easy it is to misquote people on this very site? I could easily say you deleted the post I quoyted and no one would know, except perhaps an admin or mod.
I had wanted to misquote someone besides myself but figured they might take offense.

Well, thank you everyone, I didn't even notice that there was this default option for friends only... As for me, I really seeck comments because there is no other way for me to know how people percieve my work (I just hope everyone stays polite..) So, I think it is good to have the choice but I am surprised it was set as the default mode. Anyway, thanks!
