Haha, I'm first to post. So, what is this place about?

Kaoru

WTF. A new forum? I'm curious what mobile manga is. I hope this isn't more ad space like the manga studio forum.

Mobile Manga is manga that's available on your mobile phone.

Is it some 3rd party service that all the manga companies participate in or is it something Tokyopop made?

Wait...hold on a sec. Are you telling me that I can read manga of my cell if I wanted to? It sounds really cool but how do I do it?

YamPuff

Ummm...how? Isn't the screen on your cell phone too small?

Kaoru

Too bad nothing I like will be available.
I found an article on it. (http://www.tokyopop.com/29.html)

Ummm...how? Isn't the screen on your cell phone too small?

I saw a demo of the first few pages of our book, Psy-Comm at Anime Expo, and it was pretty cool. They've done a pretty good job of formatting the panels to fit the screen, and there is a little motion from panel to panel. It was pretty cool. Unfortunately, my cell is an old nokia and the screen looks like a first gen gameboy. So I can't even see my own book. :( I'm guessing the other books will look good too (I dig the lineup!)

I'm not sure if the US will adopt this, but in Japan cell phone manga is selling like crazy.

It would be cool to have a link where you could text your friends that you are reading something cool and they should check it out. That way word of mouth would be easy to spread, as long as it didn't turn out to be too spam-like.

Soon, I'll have to add "Hey everyone buy Psy-Comm, and download it to your phone too!" when promoting it. Cool and weird at the same time.

Between this and the East Coat Rising mobile game, I might have to go out and buy a real deal phone this year.

I'm not into that sorta thing. I like reading manga in book form. One of my favorites things is looking at the page as a whole and also the two page spreads. Cellphone manga couldn't really cut it as well. Besides, I hate cell-phones.

But don't take my word for it...I'm the one who said MP3 players were stupid and would never sell. Yeah...

So....why is there an entire section dedicated to this? What can we possibly tak so much about this that we need a new section for it?

Yah, I don't have any place to read manga on my phone, I am always busy and I hate my phone lol
I don't understand the point of the forum though lol
It 's description says nothing about mobile manga.
I am a little confused lol >_<

Thanks for being open-minded (even though skeptical) about the future of manga on cell phones, YamPuff.

Your mileage may vary, and your opinion may change over time.

It's not for everyone, but I find that most folks like it a lot more after they actually try it. This section is for discussing what works and what doesn't in a broad range of TOKYOPOP Digital offerings that will be coming soon.

I earnestly hope it won't be though of as ad space. Our goal is to have a place for people to talk about what they like, what they don't like, what would make it better and so forth.

Why yes, I AM open-minded. That's why my BRAIN FELL OUT. @_______@

Ahem, ah, ok, I see now. But before trying it I will need to conquer my deep inner loathing of cell-pones and have my Daddy get me one. Than make him buy me some mobile manga. Than decide.

:p It does sound interesting, though. And if made a big hit in Japan, Japanophiles everywhere will be hankering after it. ^^ I can see the appeal, even if it doesnt appeal to me in particular.

Mobile Manga is manga that's available on your mobile phone.

Why would you want to read manga on your cellphone when you can read it in book form? I would think it'd be a pain to read it on a cellphone, especially when they have side text.

I thought that as well, but evidently it really took off in Japan.. Who would have thunk it?

YamPuff

Not me, certainly. I still can't see how you'd read the little itty-bitty words either.

I think the only reason I would read something on a cell phone would be if that were the only medium by which it was available. And even then, I doubt there could exist a manga I would care about that much. I don't intend this comment as a marketing suggestion, because I think it's kind of manipulative to sell something that way. But whatever; I'll probably ignore this "mobile manga" anyway. I have better things to spend my money on (including actual manga). >_>

This kinda reminds me of Hideo Kojima's MGS digital Novel creation.
but only' that it has sound and the pictures move.

Though mobile manga has always been around, you could make it yourself and upload it into your cell. Thats what most deticated manga fans do for the PSP.

Bleach PSP manga OP, naruto ETC.

I think I read this article somewhere that said Japan has introduced their new system where the users can view their favourite mangas on their mobiles.

You know when you can go onto the net on your mobile and watrch movie clips? I think it's like that, except that yuo can to view each page at a timeand use your kepys to move up and down and etc...

on a similar webpage, I read another one about japan introducing cube like rubbers for design and school uses...

Wouldnt mobile gaming be anything digital platform that is mobile, i.e GBA, MP, etc
I dont think that it should be limited to a phone.
Just so you all know, a few months ago i saw a show that talked about popular anime charcers going on your mobile phone, but you can talk to him/her, and they get ofended and happy and all the other emotions depending on you treat them, so if you are all happy and hyper with Rei Ayanami, she will get angry with you. KNow what i mean.

Like those folk who sold manga for PSP? Y'd think so.

Anyway, I trying to read just text on a mobil phone's arthritis-enducing squintingly bad enough, if you ask me. Reading manga just doesn't appeal, paying doubly so.

Do you need a special type of phone for the mobile manga thing to work?

Serafimangel

Hmmm? Is it expensive? I like curling up with a manga (and the smell)

However, It IS a pretty clever idea, mobiles are a huge market.

Do you need a special type of phone for the mobile manga thing to work?
Or a special programme? I wonder...

Aratos
08-29-2006, 07:21 AM
Well if you call java-enabled hpones special, yah. That said, some of the stuff in development for mobiles right now is just scary. Special programmes that have to be bought seperately and installed onto your phone? It's the future. Personally, I think enabling phones to have MP3 players and cameras was taking it too far.
On the other hand, newer phones are easier to hack into. Particularly Nokias.

Will Tokyopop only be doing the OEL's?

Kaoru

Will Tokyopop only be doing the OEL's?
I guessing yes. From what I've noticed, with a few exceptions, Tokyopop always seem to only endorse it's OEL creations. You ever notice that?

YamPuff
08-31-2006, 09:40 AM
It probably has something to do with licensing issues. The OEL's are theirs to endorse. Or maybe that they're trying to promote their popularity.

Aratos
08-31-2006, 09:49 AM
Which is a shame really. It just doesn't seem right.

I suppose the whole thing's a bit like a small-scale version of google free book downloads (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/08/download-classics.html) in a way. Just more capitalist.

YamPuff
08-31-2006, 10:11 AM
Why capitalist?

Aratos
08-31-2006, 10:19 AM
Would you pay for something that doesn't physically exist, given the choice?

YamPuff
08-31-2006, 10:40 AM
Yes; the money is supposed to go to the creator/makers, not the material it's printed on. There are authors out there who write all their books as ebooks and get paid for it.

And, do we really pay all that money for CDs because they're CDs or because of what's written on them that 'physcially doesn't exist'? Its not capitalist, its called making money. Which people do to survive, coincidently. But considering that you think it capitalist to have people pay for anything on the internet, maybe they should just spend money making programs and than give them out for free.

Aratos

Yup, that's the case, as YamPuff explained. They don't have the rights to put most of their line on cellphone.
So, the reason you see them "promoting" a lot of their OEL's is just that they own the rights to do this with them. So when a company wants to do a promotion of some kind with them, or licensed their properties, usually they can only do this with their own titles. As for all the other titles they make, well, companies'ld have to go to the original rights owners to do this. There's also a couple projects that uses Japanese or Korean artists that they're able to do this with, as they commissioned or funded these projects [ie- Princess Ai, WarCraft, and I think Ark Angels as well]

This is also why you only see certain titles on the online manga section of the site.

Aratos

mobile phones _are_ useful and neccesary though.

See, what happens in britain, is, becasue the streets are so unsafe nowadays parents give their kids a mobile. Then they can phone home/the police in an emergency.

And what sort of emergencies do you get occuring to kids in the streets in Britain? Mugging folk and stealing their mobile phone, of course!

But yeah, mobiles are useful and logical. Mobiles with cameras that can play low-res tv clips and let you read comics are not.

Kaoru
10-08-2006, 12:17 PM
Well yea. I guess it's what they've become that's not. I mean seriously, who really needs to record a 15 second low-res clip off their phone?

YamPuff
10-08-2006, 12:31 PM
Why, everyone! Did you not watch the latest cell phone commercial?

Kaoru
10-08-2006, 12:34 PM
Why? .

YamPuff
10-08-2006, 12:40 PM
Because after watching it you realise how empty your life was without being able to record low quality 30 second clips and how different your life would be, how many more friends you would have if you had had one.

Talim

Aratos

No, but a bit of phreaking makes life easier.

Take the motorola v3. The standard black version available in the UK lacks much modern functionality. Like ability to download java games. And ability to record video. But with just a few hacks, both those problems can be remedied! And it's legal!

..as opposed to getting free phone calls by changing the number on the phone. That's definately not legal even though it's possible. Not that I've done that - my phone's a POS that doesn't have a debug :p
