I'm sorry to correct you guys, but I am a music purist and incorrect genres upset me. :(

Slipknot, Refused, Manson, System of a Down, Korn, Adema, Offspring and Gorrilaz, and everything in the first post are DEFINATELY not metal. First of all, Slipknot, Refused, Manson, SOAD, Korn and Adema, and pretty much everything in the first post are nu-metal, which is music with slight metal influences + an influence of another sort. It's actually debated in the metal community whether it is metal or not. However, most avid fans agree that it's not. Also, Offspring is PUNK, not even close to metal. Gorrilaz are Alternative, and they are amazing.

If you guys want real metal, check out www.metal-archives.com

Some bands I personally reccomend are Cryptopsy (Death Metal), Dragonforce (Power Metal), Within Temptation ("gothic"/symphonic metal), Agathodaimon (Death metal), maudlin of the Well (Avant-garde metal with jazz and classical influences), Die Apokalyptischen Reiter (Symphonic Death Metal/Neoclassical), Kayo Dot (Same as maudlin of the Well, since they are pretty much the same band), Dark Tranquility (Symphonic Metal), Moonsorrow (Viking Metal), Finntroll (Folk/Black Metal), Arcturus (Progressive Metal) and early Ulver (Black Metal).

Okay. Now that's out of my system.

I agree with Eddie, by the way.. you have quite a nice list there buddy!

I'm a power metal, viking/scandic/folk/black metal fan.. and uhm, one of my personal favorite has to be Blind Guardian! :D

Metal music has a blurred separation between its branches. I consider metal to be pretty much anything heavy. i.e. screaming, double bass, maybe even a visual gimmick (not really).
Seriously though, my list also included bands of the rock genre but I figured I'd share those as well.
Eight of my mentioned bands I consider to be of the metal genre, the rest would be rock.

Well as so many before me said, eddie is right and my favourite bands atm are:

Arcturus (awesome
Arch Enemy
Amorphis
Opeth (Opeth are gods...)
Carnival In Coal (odd but cool, like jazz/funk mixed with black metal...)
Immortal
Katatonia
Kataklysm
Lamb Of God
Orphaned Land (awesome)
Still Remains (really soft but nice lyrics)
Tool (not reallly metal, but heck they're good so...)
and finally some odd tracks by Behemoth

I'm totally gonna check out Cryptopsy, Moonsorrow and Ulver though.

Eddie

Thanks for backing me up, guys. :) I'm glad to see there are real metal fans here. Although, I'm into all music. Metal is just some of it. I'm also into jazz, classical, electronica, grindcore, rap, trance, alternative, IDM, and so on. I'm pretty much into anything under the sun. :P

Well as so many before me said, eddie is right and my favourite bands atm are:

Tool (not reallly metal, but heck they're good so...)

I'm totally gonna check out Cryptopsy, Moonsorrow and Ulver though.

Tool is actually concidered by many to be Prog metal.

Cryptopsy is typical death. They're really good though. Moonsorrow is amazing. I reccomend starting off with their Kivenkantaja album first, as that's what I started off with.

Ulver is VERY amazing. They started off as folk metal, their next album was black/folk metal, and then they did JUST folk. Acoustic and chanting.

Then they switched to techno, and now they're stylized techno/opera-ish.

The black metal album is called Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden. The folk metal album is called Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler. I reccomend those first.

They also have very close ties with Arcturus, seeing as the lead singer was once in Arcturus, as was the ex-guitarist and ex-bassist. :P

That's very cool! Although I can't say that Blood Inside is my favorite. I just get the vibe that they started caring about what people thought of them when they made Blood Inside. And Garm's high pitched vocals didn't really seem that great for me. =/ But it's a pretty good album nonetheless.

Perdition City was an amazing album. :D Awesome username. :D

I kind of agree with your statement about Blood Inside; regardless it's a truly amazing album, but not as great as Perdition City. But still... both are true melancholic classics

2). Iron Maiden.
3). Metallica.
4). Megadeth.
5). Slayer.
6). Twisted Sister.
7). Jaded Heart.
8). Helloween.
9). W.A.S.P
10). Dragonforce.
11). In Flames.
12). Judas Priest.
13). Arch Enemy.
14). Kiss.
15). Saxon.

If you want to get all technical about it Lacuna Coil, Archenemy, etc. are really Metalcore (though the latter used to be a death metal band and Micheal Amott is my favorite guitarist) and Type O Negative is most certainly Industrial :p . I like it all anyway. I like all kinds of music except hardcore and emo.

Arch Enemy is NOT metalcore  it's Melodic Death Metal :p it never has been metalcore, and never will be!

but I must agree that Michael Amott kicks ass. He was awesome in Carcass, and now he's awesome in spiritual beggars and arch enemy, and when I saw them live on the Doomsday tour he did an amazing live solo ! I'd deffinatley go see them again if they come back to the UK

I checked out the Kivenkantaja album by Moonsorrow, freaking awesome, I really like parts of it, haven't been able to find the other bands albums, and I'm broke at the moment anyway...

As for tool, I've always considered it some sort of hard rock rathehr then metal, but I might be wrong, I'm far from some expert.

Godsmack hardly released any material...unless some sneaked out without my knowledge.

I listen to Nightwish, Lacuna Coil (dunno if that classes as Metal or not to be honest, but they're awesome)...and my God flamesniper it's the first time I've seen someone else like KISS in ages. I don't know how Trivium can be classed as good music, as apart from the choruses you can't understand them hardly. The only decent on I've heard by them is Like Light to the Flies...only cause that's mostly chorus. The singer can sing pretty well...if he didn't yell.

On the debate - Nu-Metal...Metal...Death Metal...
erm...they're all pretty much the same aren't they. Hence...er...Metal? :p (Don't flame me because I stated the obvious. It's just irritating to see that 'Oh it's not metal!' all the time.)

And I thought Screamo was a totally different genre to Metal? Hmm

I suggest Wikipedia for answers. :P

Just because it has the word "metal" in it doesn't make Nu-Metal metal. It's like saying "Woman, man, it's all the same thing." Or like saying "laptops and toppings are the same things, because they have the word 'top' in it!"

Just as there is a big difference between nu-metal and actual metal, there is also a difference between death metal, black metal, progressive metal, etc.

I mean, music is music, and it's pretty much all good (I just don't like the fake emo and fake rap on MTV (real rap is freaking awesome though)), but if people are going to categorize it, they might as well do it correctly.

Yeah, you're right.

Although I argue a bit that old Offspring (especially their first album) was Punk.
I also don't believe in Grunge being a genre. I view Grunge more as a 90s lifestyle, and what is labelled as Grunge is really Alternative Rock. So, in my opinion, the Grunge movement is simply the movement of Alternative Rock bands that led the Grunge lifestyle.

And yes, The Offspring's later albums leaned more towards Alternative Rock.

i listen alot of swedish and german metal bands, especially to Janus, Rammstein, In`Extremo, To Die For
(alot of them are not really "pure" metal, but have metal influences)
