View Full Version : More japanese novels should be translated

Specifically those which manga and anime have been based on. Off the top of my head, one is Kyou Kara Maou. The anime is about 78 episodes long and the backstories and various characters are barely scratched.
I heard that the novels the show is based on are 14 volumes long. o_O
I've not finished the whole anime but I'm betting the ending will not make any sense. For now, the only option i have is to study japanese in the hopes of reading the japanese novel someday.
translate more novels dammit!

The basic response from the Editors seems to be, "We will (publish more manga novels) if you buy the ones we already have out!" :)

Has anyone ever heard of Vertical Inc.? They publish the novel version of The Ring, Parasyte Eve, Dark Water, and many many more Japanese novels.
They have the entire Ring series published. The second Ring novel is NOTHING like the second Ring movie.
The series titles are Ring, Loop, and Spiral.
Also they are publishing The Guin Saga which is a novel series over one hundred volumes long and written by one woman I believe. (I could be wrong...)
But Vertical has alot of translated novels. Infact that is the only thing they publish. Japanese novels.

Vertical Inc.'s great. I've read several of their books, and though I can't do a page-to-page translation to see how accurate they are, they seem to do a pretty decent job translating. Their books are also in good shape, without big text sizes. o_O

Well I was VERY happy when Tokyopop started releasing the Slayers novels! I can't thank them enough! The novels are so great, they're the original and it shows (Kanzaki's such a cool nerd XD), and the translation was pretty good too!
And they did a decent job with the Gravitation novel...
But yeah, I request the Kyou Kara Maou novels also!! XD *makes a riot*

That's becasue rasen got covered up. They released it at the same time as ringu, it flopped, and the pretend it never happened then released a totally original sequel instead. But it does follow the plot of the book to an extent. Then again, I've only read a synopsis of the plot thanks to the impossibility of finding it with subs and my copy of the book's the Harper Collins version, so I have no idea how accurate my knowledge of the whole thing is.

i think Love Hina is a better novel. Of course, all of those are already out in the U.S. its still a good series. They are translating a Kingdom Hearts series into the U.S. I heard the book go somewhat with the game but more of goes with its own story.

I think that the Violinist of Hameln novels should be translated. Though I have to say my favorite Japanese novel of all time is "Dragon Sword and Wind Child" I want to go back to FL and see if the library that has it in my old HS will sell it to me for less than $150

I'm so glad you asked! Love Hina: The Novel is the first of two books we'll be doing for this fandom. The basic story is two-fold: there's something mysterious about the Hinata House's annex, and the Hinata House transforms temporarily into an Inn.
We worked really hard on the cover design, it's one of my favorites, using color interior art that was a sticker, actually (but we can't do stickers . . . yet; I hold out hope) and I gave it as polished and edit as possible. There's black and white artwork by Akamatsu-sensei on every page, as well as character profile art in the beginning. It's a good looking book and a quick, fun read, so I hope fans will give it a shot when it comes out this April!
Yours, Kara

As a Boys Love fan, that would be a dream come true for me as well. But there are over 40 volumes of the novels. Most novel properties don't sell beyond 6 or 7 volumes in the US. The title also belongs to Shueisha (VIZ in America) and I'm not sure that VIZ has too many shonen-ai titles (subtext, yes; flat-out yaoi, I'm not sure) on the shelves.
But the future is never certain. Let us yaoi fangirls hold out hope that someone picks it up. ^_^

The novels Tokyo Pop has chosen to translate... well, I wouldn't say that the animes inspire in me the intense desire know more about characters or the backstories. In fact, I'd prefer to watch those chosen novels and not waste my time reading them.
Anyway, I see that there are seven novels, one in each genre. http://www.tokyopop.com/books/novels.php You've got to publish a lot more before you can say, bah! people don't want to read manga novels if they aren't buying them.
But I can't complain too much, hopefully more manga novels will come out. Probably, they'll be fan translated first because of the growing demand.

I agree. I want Mirage of Blaze novel along with the manga translated. It is dream come true. I still dying from not know what kind...I mean how they (Naoe and Kagetora/Takaya) will end up each other. There so many little pieces in the anime that left you hanging. You just want to lock them in room and throw the key away. I have already lost count how many time I have watch the series along with the OVA. What drive me more nuts is how many vol. there are 40.
I also want Kyou Kara Maou novel be translated. I not too happy how the anime end, but I have hear that the manga is better. The two couple will actually get to gether. I mean the relationship between Wolf and Yuuri is better and closer.

Yeah, I'm collecting the manga right now. I was told TP couldn't get the novels cause they're owned by a different company than the manga. Or something like that.
There are DNAngel novels? Sweet. I'd like those too.

I can't ever get enough manga! (I realy do live off it some days.) I don't have any exact titles that I want translated, I just wish there was more!
Then again, I can't afford to buy all the ones I want that are already out.:p
Maybe a miricle will happen and I win the lotto, then I can catch up and it would rock to have new titles to read!

I really, really enjoyed reading the first Haruhi Suzumiya novel, not to mentioned Welcome to the NHK, in Japanese. I'd also like to see Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge (by the author of Welcome to the NHK; I'm about 1/3 of the way through it now) Shakugan no Shana, and for that matter the Tenchi Muyou! novels (which supposedly develop the back story of the OAVs a lot more).

What I'm hoping Tokoyopop picks up is the Chibi Vampire (aka Karin: The Blood making vampire) novels of which I know at least 2 exist so far since the manga itself (published by Tokyopop) mentions them both!
Heck the books effect the plot of the manga slightly, becuse Karin's purse got burned in one of the novels which is part of the reason she gets a second job in the third volume.
So since they actually are important parts of the overall story I for one would LOVE to read them. And considering that Chibi Vampire is farily popular (it's only a matter of time until the anime is lisenced) the novels would probally do well.
I've been doing MY part. I've gotten all the .hack and Slayers novels so far as well as Crest of the stars. So please Bring me more Chibi Vampire :)
Edit:
Silly me, I just saw on the website that Tokyopop IS doing the Chibi Vampire Novels! Thank you very much I'm extatic to learn of this! I'll Be buying them asap!!! Hope sales are good so that all of them are translated :)

There are seven novels, and two short story collections at the moment.
I'll be translating the fourth one next month, I believe.
But they are very good -- and they're mystery novels.

In the back of Trinity Blood: Rage Against the Moons vol.1 is mentions something about checking out the Full Metal Panic and Good Witch of the West novels, but I can't seem to find any mention of release dates for either! That sucks cause I can't wait to read both! Although, it's pretty awesome that Tokyopop has picked up almost all the light novel series that I want to read. Now if we could just get Saiunkoku Monogatari and Kyou Kara Maoh....and maybe the novels for Ghost Hunt by the lady that wrote the 12 kingdoms....

I would love to read the Ghost Hunt novels. They're number one on my novels translations wish list. I would also like to read the Kaze no Stigma novels, the ones the currently running anime is based on.
