I've read both Eragon and Eldest. Both are great novels and I do look forward to both the live action movie and the third book! Paolini is a fine author who I discovered after powering my way through JK Rowling's Harry Potter Series. His story is amazing. How is family published his book on their own for many years before it 'caught fire' so to speak. He's been on a few tv shows promoting his book and poeple are really starting to take notice of his work. It truly falls within the realms of Lord of the Rings fantasty with the 'Harry Potter' magic mystique. Eldest's departure from just being a story told from just the side or Eargon to encompass both Roan and others really adds more depth to the story. I do hope that Paolini continues the story beyond a mere 3 novels.

They are two of the best novels i have read. The question is, what is better, Eldest or Eragon? And wht storyline do you prefer (overall), Rowan or Eragon? (in eldest)

I enjoyed reading Eragon and Eldest. Personally, I think I prefer Eragon, though some parts of Eldest were better. I like Eragon's storyline in Eldest.

If you get the chance then do try to read Eldest. While the format is a bit different from Eargon it does make the overall story become more Epic in a sense. You get to see other characters come onto their own in Eldest. :D

I like the storyline for the eldest best and eragon's story is ten times better but i'm still so glad they brought rowan's story into the picture because it was starting to annoy me that i didn't know who the "betrayal in the family" was and it's still totally awesome and does anyone know when the movie is supposed to come out?

I think both Eragon and Eldest are equaly cool. I can't understand why it's in the young adult section when it's cool enough to be in the regular Fantasy section. Can't wait to see the movie.:D

They are good books. Once a week I volunteer at an elementary school library and they're very popular. I'd recommend them to any fantasy fan.
But I had some problems with "Eldest". *Mild spoilers ahead. I'm assuming anyone reading this has read both books.* I felt it was very uneven. The Roran parts were awesome but when it cut back to Eragon it put me to sleep. I know his training is important but there was no real drama during it. What little conflict there was is solved with a deus ex machina (I'm talking about the dragon spirits' gift at the festival). Also, I saw the "family betrayal" coming even before I finished "Eragon". When a certain character tells Eragon his life story in the first book, it fits a little too well with what we know of Eragon's past. It was so obvious that they were related and how.

Eragon got me hooked into the story right from the beginning, but as for Eldest the parts that really got me was the ending There wasn’t much going on on Eragon’s side in the beginning and middle. At some parts I felt that they talked about Roan a bit too much even though more drama is happening on his side of the story. I prefer to see how Eragon's relationship with Arya (is that her name? I don’t remember) will progress. But both were a good read.

I heard that there was a movie being made, and it piqued my interest.
Can someone tell me what the first one is about, but vaguely, and with no spoilers.

I have yet to read Eldest yet, mostly due to I am not a huge fan of Hard Cover books. I know, the hard Cover books will last longer, but I never really cared personally for them. I would rather get the Paper Back volumes of them; smaller, easier to carry around, and cheaper.
But getting back to the main topic here, I have read Eragon, and I really enjoyed that book. The idea about a young boy going on an adventure to avenge a death to his family is not a new one, but the way it’s presented and fleshed out through the book makes it fresh, like I’ve never experienced a story like that before.
The thing I like about this series is that it’s not “watered down” to compensate for the younger audiences. Like Harry Potter’s author, J. K. Rowling always says, (or something along this line) “We tend to treat children as if they cannot handle the heartaches of the world. We underestimate their understanding and will power.”
That is how I see Eragon. It’s like a children’s book, but it’s not one that is so “happy-go-lucky.” The main character went through heartache, pain, suffering, and turmoil. He understands that the world isn’t going to always be flowers and chocolate bars, and yet he continues to push forward.

Well, extriandreamer, I never really considered them as long. The thing about forums is (at least for me), when I am going to say something, it’s not like an instance chat or IM. There is some time gaps within the conversations. With that in mind, I’m not going to post a single sentence that doesn’t add much to the conversation but an extremely vague idea that isn’t fleshed out or something that can be understood as to why I as the posted chose to say that.
When I make a post, I want to give reasons why I said what I did, why I believe such a thing. If I went around to all the threads that I comment in and only say “I like this series,” I personally don’t feel like you get that much out of it. But if I give reasons why I like it, what inspired me to read it in the first place, etc. then I feel like the person who is going to read it will understand fully why I like the said book / comic / whatever.
he just has alot of time on his hands...:D
Actually I don't. It doesn't take me that long to type up a post like this. At the most, fifteen minutes is the max I would spend. I never really understood the idea that those who post posts that are not of the normal length, are slightly longer or such is because the said posted has more time. I wish I did have more time, but this world isn’t that forgiving. I make due where I can.

read and own both. they were good, but my mom said they were too predictable. i mean i knew the thing with Murtaugh and Eragon before it even happened.
i love how chris (the author) uses all these weird words to describe things. for example a qeue to describe a persons hairstyle! who thinks of these things!
its pretty obvious where his ideas come from, but considering he wrote them when he was 17-18 its cool!

I'm sorry to say I hated Eragon. I hated the character Eragon , the book, the dragon and the creepy old guy.
Yup. It was too rip-off-ish for me. I like originality. You read it and every other sentance your going *cough*rip-off*cough*. And what's the deal with his misery over that dumb scar on his back? That was annoying.
Only character I did like was the bad guy's son. He should have been the main character. Than he might have created a --gasp-- original story. And the prphecy basically spelled out the entire synopsis of the three books. Sorry, not planning to get further than book one. I already know who's his love interest, and that he's going to defeat the evil guy.

The movire will probably be excellent though. I always wanted Anne McCaffery's books to be made into movies. Does anyone know why they weren't?
I don't like Eragon because after you've read Tolkein, Anne McCaffery, Robert Jordon and RR Martin, you've read the best. It just doesn't come up to standards.
Foreordained99
03-31-2006, 06:15 AM
I'm not that keen on Tolkein...i think the chapters drag on far too much. You spend so long reading about one set of characters that you cant wait to read about what's happening to the others, but when you read through pages and pages and pages of the other characters you wish you were reading about the first set...well, thats what its like with me anyway ^-~
McCaffery is great! The Dragons of Pern series are really good and the Crystal singer books^^

Yes, Tolkein is definately boring, but he created Legolas whom I loved before Orlando Bloom played him (though he did the part justice >^-^<). I read the three long books just to read about the friendship of Legolas and Gimli. 'The Hobbit' was always my favorite, since it wasn't as long and drawn out.
I'm not some 'only Tolkein is good' fantasy purist or something. I like a lot of things, but Eragon struck me as nothing new. Paolini gave nothing to the genre it didn't already have. If it had been my first fantasy I probably would have loved it, but I kept seeing how much he stole (er, borrowed) from everyone else, without really improving on what he took, or making it his own.
The most original part of the book would be his three different kinds of magic thing; the wizards, sorcerors and mages thing. Or whatever they were called. Three different sects that all use magic differently. Now that was original. He's not a bad writer, he used the word 'sporadically' (my favorite word) but lacks creativity.

i agree that most of his ideas were borrowed, esp. Bid'Daum. anyone who has read Dune knows what it is.
2 things i like are the fact that he uses lots of neat words for the weirdest things. angela is by far my favorite character because she reminds me of... well me! the other is how he sometimes uses lines from movies. like in Eldest: "Barges? Barges? We don't need no STINKING barges!" and "It was but a flesh wound."

There are alot of flaws in the Inheritence books, but I still appreciate them. Eragon was definently better than Eldest (which just got WAY too predictable. Drove me nuts.) Not only that, but the ending was just insanely unoriginal. 'course it was dead obvious from the first book what was gonna happen. :)
Setting spoilers aside, Murtagh is definently my favorite character. Maybe I don't like Eldest for his MAJOR lack of appearance. Saphira, Angela, and Solembun are also loved. I wanna personally kill Eragon. Arya was also irritating, not so much in Eragon, but in Eldest.
I wish Paolini was a bit more cryptic in his foreshadowing. I hope the 3rd book will live up to Eragon. Eldest didn't do so well in comparison. :(

Oy yeah! I totally agree with you, Eragon is absolutely one of the best fantasy books ever. I Just love that story. The whole book is a fantastic piece of fantasy. The secon book, "The eldest" isn't realized in my country yet (It won't be realized until October 2006!) and that's most regrettable!!
Mabye I have to buy the book in english, then. Don't know if I can wait that long?!

I couldn't really get into this book. I just didn't think it was that good. It was good for a 16 year old, sure. I think anyone who can complete a novel has made a major accomplishment. It's a lot of work. But his story was a little too borrowed from other stuff. I have read a lot of books, so something has to strike me as original. There are too many good books out there for me to read a rehashing of other stuff.
I really like the cover art though, and I think it has won awards. Which it should, it made me pick up the book.

Hey! If you guys like Eragon & Eldest then you'll love R.A. Salvatore. If you want magic, swordfighting, dwarfs, elves, and more the Drow Series is the absolute best. There are at least 16 books to that series. Also by the same author is "Spearwielders Trilogy" & "The Crimson Shadow Trilogy" you gotta read these.

I've read the first book, Eragon, and was so let-down by its unoriginality I vented my annoyance into a review for one of my college writing classes.
As has already been said, he brought nothing new to the genre. Just lots of remixed bits of Lord of the Rings, Anne McCaffery's Pern series, and one or two other sources I can't remember off the top of my head. I can't even remember which character(s) I liked, they were that forgettable. :(
It really, really read more to me like a (talented) fan fiction writer inserting himself into the LotR universe. Then going, "Hold up - I could turn this into a selling novel! *make minor edits*"
Again - he seems like a talented writer. The words he used were well-chosen. I just don't think he's particularly original or inventive.

I think he's cute, but we should probably reserve judgement until we've seen the film. You never know, he may be an amazing actor. But all I can say is, they better do justic to the books.
And does anyone know who's playing Arya?
When in doubt return to the source... wikipedia. *sacrifices something to the wikipedia sprites*
Sienna Guillory portrays Arya

You're talking about a kid who got freaked over a scar on his back byt the end of the book. He can still walk, he's not disfigured, he's alive for crying out loud yet suddenly he's a cripple cuz of a little mark on his back? Jerk.
The highlights suit him.

Pfft. Real heros don't whine like he did. Besides, I felt he was more upset about scar tissue than agony, if ya know what I mean. Also, Paolini didn't do a very good job; I felt Eragon was way over-dramatising it. He should have stressed the agonising oain a bit more. I have no recollection of it.
I'm not saying the highlights don't suit him ... I'm saying I'm surprised Alagaesia's discovered peroxide hair dye :D
All he had to do was tell his hair ;you will have blond highlights' in his magic tongue...in order to overcome the disbalance they changed color. ;) Good theory?
Pixie Dust
06-11-2006, 10:23 AM
Lol, an excellent theory. Too bad it won't work here :( :D
And yeah, I suppose you're right. Eragon is a bit of a sissy. So he's got a scar, big deal. I was secretly pleased when Murtagh basically kicked his ass at the end of book 2.
Murtagh is waaaaaaaaaaay cooler than Eragon, IMO.

Go purple fluffy bunnies!!!
I find most heroines even more annoying than heroes. Villians are blatantly the best characters in most books. And most films.
Eragon strikes me as a lets-rush-in-there-and-save-everyone-without-worrying-about-tactics-and-basic-military-strategy kinda guy. It's a good thing he has a dragon, otherwise he'd so be dead by now.

There probably will be three movies, but since they've cast him already that looks like he's gonna show up in the first film. Maybe flash-back type when Brom tells Eragon about the Dragon Riders etc.
There are precious few books in which I actually like the hero. Even fewer where I like the heroine. Most of the time I'm hoping the bad guy will actually succeed in plunging the world into eternal chaos and darkness for once

Three movies, huh? They'll probably be really good; Ergaon doesn't have much to it so its easy to translate into film and fancy graphics.
I'm just the same with badguys and goodguys....I always root for the badguys ot win. I always get diappointed of course, but its fun.:D

Now, personally, I get the idea that these films are going to be junior Lord-Of-The-Rings type films, so I don't really have my hopes up. I'm also guessing that the film makers are going to go along the Harry Potter and His Dark Materials road - in that they're going to try and aim the films at a younger audience, thereby taking out parts that would probably make the film good. So really the only reason I'm going to see it is cos the actor that plays Eragon is hot. I'm hoping Murtagh will be hot too as he's my fave character, but I don't know who plays him.

It was always going to be hard to cast Arya. I mean, Paolini says in the prologue of Eragon that her beauty was such that any mortal man would immediately fall in love with her or something (because of course that's not cliche), so it was never going to be easy to cast a human actress in the role. Now, I've not seen any close up pictures of the actress that plays her, but I reckon they've done alright. At any rate, I'm going to reserve judgement until I've seen them act.

Well, I think Arya and Roran's fiance should have switched roles (Katrina [I think that's her name] is WAY prettier). Also, did you know that the person that acted for Arya was also Helen of Troy?
And here are pictures of Arya and Katherine;

THE MOVIES WAS TERRIBLE!!!!
a gazillion cuts were made. number 1 there was no snow in the beginging. two brom did not set garrow's house on fire. three. eragon was chasing the ra'zac not the opposite around. ayra was suppose to be sleeping the whole time. she was not suppose to be at brom's funneral. the traveling was done in three seconds meaning about 500 pages was sum up to three seconds. we never meet the twins. and murtagh wasn't suppose to be there that early in the story. and what happened to roran and katrina's relationship. and arya was all lovey dubby holding hands with eragon. grrrrrrrrr. and eragon doesn't learn magic that early. the didn't do the magic training in the deserts and eragon only had one ten second woodsword battle with brom. and murtagh does NOT want eragon to go to the varden. and brom i wasn't suppose to give eragon morzan's sword at his death. arya and the twins never tested eragon at the varden. and WHAT happen to orik i never saw him. there are alot more faults in the movie
i was crying out of depressedness. im sooooo damn depressed.
