Hey. Well, I feel that since the website is new and all, there are still some things I, as a member, can contribute to make it a better site.
Well I would like to say that I think we should change the use of the word "Gender" to Sex. As my signature will show, Gender is supposed to be used to describe whether someone is Masculine, Femeinine Androgynous, and everything in between. Meanwhile, Sex is just male or female.

Hmm...I feel bad for having to complain about this, but it would be great if the website changed it.

Yes, yes and they should change photo to image because photo is short for photograph and most of those pictures are not photographs, but they are images because they are in an image format.

...if you couldn't already tell I'm mocking you. Come on. Gender can also specify male or female, it doesn't exclusively refer to masculinity or femininity.

With some of the perv's we have on this site i personaly dont think "sex"is the best way to describe it. Gender explains it perfectly seeing as nobody has complained about it up till now and it seems that it doesnt bother anybody else but you at the moment.

o.0 I...honestly don't see the point of changing it...we've got a lot BIGGER fish to fry than that...^^;

I don't have a problem with it. But I'd think it'd be nice if people could see if so and so was a male or female by looking under their name. On the side with all the Join Date, Location, and Posts. Of course you can also have the option of keeping it secret. But that's just my opinion.

A photograph is a picture taken with a camera and an image is a general term for a visible depiction of something.

For TP, the word 'Photos' is a shortened form of 'Photograph', as you aptly pointed out, and what is -supposed- to be in the Photos section are, to my knowledge, PHOTOS and not just any image scanned from a book or DVD cover.

Therefore, it makes no sense to mock her/him and say that 'Photos' should be changed to 'Images' because the 'Photos' section was MEANT to contain photographs and not just random scans or wallpapers or desktops or whatever.

Why change the name to something it wasn't meant to describe?

And if what I just said is not the case, then a Site Admin had better gain a better grasp for the English language and its definitions and specify.

As for the 'Gender' issue... I agree with Yongo completely even though I feel that the option to 'hide' your gender solves the issue nicely.

There IS a difference between 'gender' and someone's physical 'sex'.

Ever heard of transgendered people? Ever heard of someone with XXY chromosomes?

They sure do exist and for people like them or even for people who just don't feel comfortable identifying themselves as the gender their physical sex and appearance allude to, the gender question without its appropriate options is a very uncomfortable and even misleading one.

Oh yeah, and I'm also not the only one to agree with this, either.

Here's a quote from the dictionary on the usage of 'gender' versus 'sex'.

Usage Note: Traditionally, gender has been used primarily to refer to the grammatical categories of “masculine,” “feminine,” and “neuter,” but in recent years the word has become well established in its use to refer to sex-based categories, as in phrases such as gender gap and the politics of gender. This usage is supported by the practice of many anthropologists, who reserve sex for reference to biological categories, while using gender to refer to social or cultural categories. According to this rule, one would say The effectiveness of the medication appears to depend on the sex (not gender) of the patient, but In peasant societies, gender (not sex) roles are likely to be more clearly defined. This distinction is useful in principle, but it is by no means widely observed, and considerable variation in usage occurs at all levels.

And to the person who thinks that the word 'sex' is somehow going to encourage perverted behavior... There's already 'Adult Only' content on this site. I sincerely doubt the word 'Sex' and a listing of physical sexes is going to spur perversion.

The discrepancy between 'gender' and 'sex' is an important one and I think people need to show more sensitivity towards it.

I feel bad that you even brought up the topic. If my name on tp forum was shela would people think I'm a woman or would they just think I'm sitting in my room on cell block 8 in the local jail. But seriously like everyone else said gender and sex mean the same thing.

Gender: somebody’s sex: the sex of a person or organism, or of a whole category of people or organisms (often used euphemistically to avoid the word “sex”)
Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

You can't draw arrows on the page but if you read it closely it says "often used to avoid the word sex"

I think this is a stupid topic to begin with >_< why post something you know people are going to laugh at you for? This is the first time Kaoru's rudeness has made me laugh ^_^ because i agree although I think there is a better comparison than the image and photo :P
Anways, I think that it comes down to one of the two- A. You are too concerned about looking smart that you pay attention to the dumb details and get laughed at or B. You really care about this comparison because you made the word gender up and have a fued with the creator of the word sex. I think it could be A. This topic was started to begin arguements of the dullest nature and have the topic locked. Klawzie will be here any minute ^_^

Hold up. I was born with a Y chromosome and am very much a woman thanks. I'm sure that goes for any other chick born with a Y, or even girls with Turner S. Sure, I am aware of Klinefelter syndrome, and I know of someone who has it that I consider a close friend, but I certainly don't consider them someone with a 'condition' anymore then they consider themselves as being someone with a 'condition'. They know the score of what it's like to be Trans and in the minority, and quite honestly until more than 1 in 500 to 1000 live male births take place, I see no reason for Tokyo Pop to change what is the standard M or F as a classification of what is nothing more than a simple 'web identity'.

Honestly, this is picking nits. I wouldn't dream of asking anyone online to give me an intersexual checkbox because of my chomosome anomalies . >_>

I'm not looking to pick nits, either, because I'm perfectly fine with how [it] is now, but it would be nice for people to stop making assumptions and trying to pigeonhole everyone into neat tidy categories as well and that's why I posted what I did.

My friend has Klinefelter and s/he always gets the comments that boil down to, "You look like a guy/girl and therefore you are" which leads to other assumptions about what s/he's like, most of which are quite untrue.

S/he feels more feminine and therefore identifies as female if s/he had to, but anatomically speaking, she is a he. She's been the topic of outrage from people who thought 'she' was a she complete with all the anatomical equipment only to find out that 'she' is actually a 'he', physically.

Anyway, enough of that.

But because of my friend, I've become hyper aware of gender issues and the effects of pigeonholing people. If people didn't care so much about gender to begin with, then I don't think these issues would crop up so much; this IS the internet, right?

But people ARE preoccupied with the gender of the person who they're talking to and that's what makes gender into such an issue at times.

Personally, I could care less what gender someone thinks I am. I'm not looking to hook up with anyone and none of my interactions in online communities hinge on my gender whatsoever.

So yeah. Nitpicking indeed. But if people want to be so bold to assume that no one else will ever have the same concerns as the thread starter brought up, then I can be so bold to step up and say that actually, yeah, other people might be concerned, too, and why.
