View Full Version : What is the strangest Japanese food you've tried?

I think for me it was some cracker thing with cheese and tiny fish on it. I didn't like it but i was given some sort of Japanese chocolate for being brave enough to try it!

Sweet bean paste cake. It's a cake shaped like a fish and ironically actually looks like a fish instead of a cake. But is the most tasty treat you'd ever get.

I don't know the name of it, but it was a sweet desert that had octopus and green peppers( i think they were green peppers). Aside from the occaisonal crunchy ocotpus beak, it was pretty good.

I'm gonna freak y'all out anyone try whole roasted crabs? they're about the size of a quarter, and really crunchy, either that or dried squid. seaweed isn't bad I eat that like candy! I've eaten so many weird things, my mom is Japanese so it really isn't surprising.:D

I never had whole reasted crab, but i did eat whole snow crab. After you cook it instead of eating just the legs, you flip it over and tear off the head shell so that it acts like a bowl, and drink up. It's REALLY GOOD.

I don't think yam noodles are weird but you're right... you get tired of it because it has no real taste.
Anyway... I think the weirdest thing I saw on a menu in Japan was roast sparrow on a stick. I almost got to eat it too but we ordered it and it was out of season.

The weirdest thing I can remember trying was some sort of dried, crunchy squid skin. I didn't like it all that much, but I got a few dollars out of it since my mom bribed me to try it. :D

Nattou omfg. x) Thankyou for bringing up horrible memories of my Japanese teacher forcing the class to eat the stuff. It should be used as a slow and painful torture device as replacement for the death sentence.
I've also had dried squid (or it was some other various sea creature) tentacles, but that's Hawaiin. :|

Lol. You weren't insulting me. I know alot of people who hate it too. I commend you for actually being able to keep it down (I think) My friend threw up when she tried it for the first time
Guess it comes with growing up eating food like that. You have to be used to food like that to like it. Or ou have to be old to like it - When you're old, you have less taste buds.

That had to suck. o_o Especially if she was trying it in a restraunt or some place like that.

If you grew up on that stuff, it makes a lot of sense. I think the weirdest food I've grown up on is probably...lasagne? xP We have a lot of Italian food since our family is Italian, but most of that stuff is really common in America.
I don't want to lose my taste buds. T_T Food is my life. But it's also the sight of nattou thats kind of scary. It's hard to eat stuff that look like that, at least for me.

If you combine natto, lutefisk, balut, and haggis, you can make a monster powerful enough to destroy the universe.

Natto's the mildest of the bunch-- lutefisk is lye-soaked fish, balut is half-formed duck embryo, and haggis is a sheep's lungs, liver, and heart stuffed into its stomach with oats and onions.
...Eww, onions.

Nattou is begining to sound like a mouth-watering delicacy. How the hell do they consider that other stuff "food"? Dx But onions are good. Especially on pizza.

Heh, lutefisk is actually very dangerous if it's consumed too early. All that lye, y'know.
I'm surprised(or not) that no one's listed puffer fish. How can you not enjoy a fish that could easily kill you with a mere nibble?

Oh noes, not fugu, the fishie of death! D: But the thing is, I don't think anyone here has actually tried/wants to try it. I heard it's actually pretty bland though. ^^'
Holy Dragon Sword

Lye is a caustic solution. You see it pop up in bar soap recepies, and can be made from wood ashes and water. Lutefisk has a pH level of 12, which really burns the flesh-- so it has to be balanced back toward the safe zone, taking days.
Fugu's a great food to serve to people you wouldn't mind unclogging the air...

Ummm... I usually go for the really mild stuff...
Hmmm. *thinks*
The only thing I can think of eating that would seem somewhat odd to the general community is pickled radish. That stuff is so salty, you can feel your blood pressure skyrocket while you eat it, and yet, it's still one of my favorite little condiments they put on the side of sushi plates. So it's really not that weird. I'm Japanese, so it's really not that odd for me either...
I'm one of those picky eaters who won't eat something if it doesn't look appetizing...
Ewwwww, nattou doesn't sound good right now...
But miso isn't the same as nattou, right? Because I love miso soup... Miso with some tofu and some of that special seaweed that's thicker than regular kinds... I want some... *is getting hungry thinking about it*
I should stop posting in the munchies section... It's making me hungry...

Miso (http://www.mountfuji.co.uk/recipes/misosoup.jpg) and nattou (http://nisshii.seesaa.net/image/nattou.JPG). Miso, is not the same as nattou at all. But it's very scrumptious. o_o! *squishes her new Miso friend*

What is miso?
The strangest thing (and nastiest) that I ate was instant Udon noodles. So disgusting! I almost threw up from the smell and the taste was something that made me want to take three habuneros (how do you spell that?) and chew them for thirty minutes...

Miso is a kind of soup that has tofu, seaweed(i think) and a kind of broth, along with some kind of thin noodle.
I ate fish balls one time. It's strange once you think about it, but actually, all they are, are balls of cooked fish. <3 Delisch!
My dad one time was at a restaurant in Japan with my mom and she gave him fish balls, and he said, "Fish have balls?!" It's interesting <3

Miso is made out of fermented soy bean paste. Natto is made out of fermented soy beans. They actually aren't all that different. Old Japanese people would mix natto into their miso.
And with the instant udon. Was it the stuff that had 'fresh' udon in a packet or dry udon? If it was dry, you probably cooked it wrong. If it was fresh, you probably bought some cheap brand of udon.

See, it's not the ingredients. It's the fact that one looks like soup. And the other looks like it's made of things which should not be named at this kind of place. x3

Natto its smelly...but if you can swallow... the after taste ain't that bad.
One thing my japanese friends think its weird that I like is the Ocha cooked leaves.
Don't know why, they taste good.
I also like Kampio, and pickled ginger...that one is good.
But the strangest I ever had was this little marzipan like chic... that tasted like a thousand sweet&low bags in it! XP

Hmm...I actually haven't had all that much strange stuff. I guess it would be tuna sashimi, which actually isn't so bad. It's kind of bland, though. Inarizushi kind of tastes weird, but it's delicious, sweet...I crave it now. xD

UGGH. Yuck. That really doesn't look appetizing at all. *tells herself never to order the natto, no matter how much she wants to*
Maybe I'll go to the store again and look for more weird candy. It's amazing what they can turn into candy. I had some marshmellows with apple gelatin in the middle. It had a big "Hello Kitty" image plastered on it, and it looked good from the outside, but that candy was really really sweet... I felt like I was going to throw up shortly after that.
But the apple gummies I got once I'm addicted to. They're individually wrapped, so they're really messy, and very wasteful in terms of conserving, but they're good ^.^

Someone once told me that natto looks like rice krispies treats gone horribly wrong. I think it was the sticky threading. Natto is good for you. Mix it with a little soysauce, mustard and green onion, and eat with rice to start your day. :)
I really don't find Japanese food all that strange, but I do find some of the toppings (http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Bunker/2275/pizza.html) they put on pizza abominations to mankind.
Miso soup is also ridiculously easy to make at home. Drink a bowl with rice for breakfast if the natto squicks you out too much.

Well Im not going to say thats nasty because I've never tried it before, but ill try anything once. No matter how gross it looks. I guess the weirness thing I have tried is Octopus and squid. The octopus is like gum you got to chew the hell out of it to swallow. Dang it sure is good though.
