Isn't pdf an Adobe Reader text file?

As far as I know, you don't.
After our artists use Manga Studio or other programs to make their page images, we use InDesign to put the pages in order, add text, and make the pdfs.

Oh, ok. So you do not add the text in MS, just the word bubbles... and save the text for InDesign? (I own InDesign so I could do this, just wish I could do the text in MS and then export as .pdf)

Correct.

Adobe uses their own text engine instead of relying on the operating system's text engine, so you get better line breaks and kerning (if you're using optical kerning, which is recommended). I don't know what kind of special options Manga Studio might have for sound effects and whatnot, but if you do text in InDesign it makes it a lot easier to fix mistakes in the future (and make different language versions, etc.).

For those of us who have Macs running OS X, we can create a PDF without any other software than MS (Debut or EX). Just go as if you're printing the document, and there's a button that says "Save as PDF" -- click that button and you should have a PDF of your document. You may have to play around with the settings, but I've even got a PDF of a Color Manga Studio story!
