View Full Version : Uk er US

Ok, I have two questions and they're really important. My friend and I are doubling on the manga we're making. I am doing all the art and panels and bubbles and everything and he is doing the tones and shades. Only one problem. He is in the UK. Now, we have easy communication and everything but I am not sure if he can work with me because we would submit it to the US (he's fine with that) but I don't know if TokyoPop will be happy with that.
Also, I don't think I will win but if by some miracle I did win and they ask you to pitch them a story and it is made into a novel do you have to move to a TokyoPop location (like a building er something) or do you just mail in the stuff like the RSOM contest? Sorry to ask such stupid questions ^_^'
Please reply!!

First off, simma down and please wait for more than an hour for a reply ... at least a day or something before bumping your own thread.
Not sure about the RSOM entry (I assume that's waht you're referring to when you mentioned the manga you've created)... I think TPOP might stick to their guns when it comes to country of residence. Wait for Peter or another TPOP person for the definite on that one.
But your team can still send in a book pitch. I don't think TPOP is accepting novel submissions, but manga pitches are just fine. And you don't need to move closer to the TPOP offices. A lot of the OGM creators are all over the world, and all they need is a good internet connection.

Sorry bout the whole Please reply thingy lol ^_^
I really need to enter in the RSOM. If we can't do it than I can just tell him he can't help and I am sure he'll be cool about it
Hopefully they can make an exception. He isn't an artist he is just good with tones and he wanted to tone them for me. He wouldn't be helping on anything else (if by a magical chance we won or something) he just wanted to take part in this. thanx for replying!
Oh also I have this question ^_^
umm they say in the submissions 8x11 copies for the RSOM but they have to be scaled to the actual required size. Do you just do in that size and print it out on 8 x11?
Also can you just do all the work in the safety area or do you have to do the work in there and put a black boundary around where the bleed area outside is? Or an outline around the outside trim area? Sorry.

To enter the US or UK rising stars, all the people working on the entry have to live in the country they're entering the contest for.
You don't have to draw a border around the bleed. Just center the image on the page. (Well, if you lay it out in InDesign and print with crop marks, that helps too, but we don't expect anyone to do that.) If you're one of the top 20 finalists (I think) you'll be asked to provide the digital files so they're easy to put online for the voting (and for printing in the final book).

Thank you Peter. Um but I was wondering if you could answer the second question about the size. I just don't want to start work and have issues lol

I can answer that second question... I got in RSOM 3 after all, so I believe I did things right. ^_^
Your final page size should be around 5x7 inches, so print that out on a regular 8x11.5 (center the image).

Wait...now I'M confuzzled. o.o Does it HAVE to be centered?! I dunno how to do that! I usually let mine print like to the upper right, like anything else does...o.o...

Uh, you don't have to center it... It just... looks pretty that way. ^^;
What program are you using? Most programs usually center the images...I think. ^^;

Manga Studio...o.o Come to think, I've never printed anything off from Manga Studio, since I bought it and started drawing in it. XD I SHOULD prolly try it...if I had a printer with ink in it. *glares at cheap printer parents bought for Christmas, knowing that she needed decent printer for school*

Manga Studio prints everything off in the centre of the page. Along with any other details like Title, Page Number & Authors name if these were included in the initial page setup, & you choose to include them when you print it out.

I mean like do u do the manga at the small dimensions they give you and print them out on the 8x11 paper or do you actally make the manga take up the entire 8x11? Like would it only fill up the middle er the entire page?

Do the manga pages at the small dimensions we give you and then print them centered on 8.5"x11"-size paper, not stretched to take up the whole sheet of paper.

If you use the 1.5 size, then you will almost certainly be using the ENTIRE surface area of the A4/8x11 page, with only a few millimetres from the edge.
You then reduce them to the Tokyopop standard size, so the final piece will be in the middle with room to add details, like the Title, Page Number & Author's name etc.

Thanks man ^_^ so I understand. But can someone just say yes or no instead of explaining it (I am dumb I am sorry XD). Your entry photocopies are on 8x11 and the manga is in the middle on the standard measuresment for TP. And then you write er use a a program to put text on the page with the page number and all that info. Just say yes er no lol sorry to be such a nagging jerk but I am freakin out with the dimensions cuz I need to get started ^_^

Thanx so much ^_^
Here is the page I did for Rsom5, I send them the same page with the same format.

Trim mean the paper will be cut off there.
Bleeding mean you need draw a little bit bigger than the trim size, in case the printing mechine didn't cut extactly on the trim margin. It will prevent white border showing around the page.
Hope it explains it...

Does this mean you have to tone your pages at 5x7 to avoid the moire pattern if you're toning digitally?
