This thread is basically here to discuss old school gaming classics.

I started playing Nintendo back when I was 3 or 4 years old. My older siblings bought one and I luckily inherited it when they moved out.
I never had an SNES as a kid, just an NES until '97 when I finally had enough money to buy a Nintendo 64.

But, in the years between, I played a lot of NES games. I even managed to acquire an old Coleco Vision (anyone remember that?) at a yard sale and an old Atari from my uncle.
Ahh ... you just can't measure up to classics like that.

Some of my favorite older games:

Joust (played on my Atari)
Buggy Boy (also on the Atari)
Dragon Warrior (NES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Faxanadu (NES)

I could keep on listing them, up until the days when I did finally get a SNES (about the time I got my first job), but that could take days.

Basically, discuss your favorite classic games and share memorable gaming stories. :3

I liked this game some of the commodore 64 games such as paperboy and detective, they also had a fruit machine one which was pleasantly addictive

My favorite vintage game would have to be... EarthBound! <3
The graphics fit the mood of the game perfectly, and the music is good too.

Never had a NES back in the day; only an SNES. But I have played some of the older Super Mario on Super Mario Old Stars (I think those were updated a bit though...). Mario FTW! XD

I started playing with Atari with my cousins and I moved on to NES in 1991 I think (I was like 4 years old) My favorite games were : Contra, Double Dragon (this is one hell of a game), Super Mario 2, Pro Am and Castlevania (still one of my favorites).

Earthbound was SO awesome. I can't wait for the release of Mother 3. ^___^

@sensei-: Cool. I started playing NES back in 1990, when I was about 4 or so. I'm pretty sure that's when my brother and sister first got it.
I played a lot of Super Mario Bros. and Duckhunt back then.

sensei-

I forgot about the cassette that have Mario and Duckhunt. I use to play with that a lot too before I got my hands on Castlevania and Double Dragon. Man I think im going retro tonight jajajaja Thanks Soma!!!!!! (by the way I like your avatar)

Heh! Thanks. Yours is awesome, too. BECK is by farmy favorite series.
Can't wait for the rest of the volumes to be released here.

I've never played the first Double Dragon, but my brother, my friend and I played a lot of Double Dragon III. That game was TOUGH.
I don't think we ever made it further than level 4.

Another NES favorite of mine was Battletoads.
That game NEEDS a remake.

sensei-
03-16-2006, 08:00 PM
Yea man Battletoads were awsome, I like the crossover with Double Dragon (the Battletoads games were so cool!). I also like the Ninja Turtles games, the first three on NES and the fourth on SNES.

I was more onto Double Dragon 1 because I used to paly it a lot on Arcade.

Like I said, the game needs a remake/new version of the game. Maybe even something along the lines of the latest TMNT games, only with more adventuring, and the ability to beat up your team mates. :p

I remember playing TMNT II at the arcade a lot. Probably the only game I actually played there. Heh! So awesome.
Come to think of it, that was probably the first game I ever played all the way through.

sensei-
03-16-2006, 08:17 PM
I did'nt expect TMNT II to be your first beaten game. I never play it on arcade, but I know it was there. My first beaten game was Contra with the 30 life cheat of course! Here's another Classic I enjoy Ninja Gaiden on NES it was hard but good!

Actually the game I miss playing is Mutant League Football
We used to get together on Saturday nights and play till early Sunday morning
It was always fun just trying to kill the other team.
I have a friend that till this day still reminds me how mad I used to get when I was winning then he'd pull some stunt that would wipe out half my team.

sensei-

The old gameboy was something every gamer of the old school remember. That and Tetris of course, that combination = tons and tons of hours of fun. I realy enjoyed A link to the Past on gameboy, I remember ther was a bundle that included A link to the Past.

Hellz, yeah! I'm trying to find the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES.
What made Ninja Gaiden so hard was that there were no save points and no passcodes. :p
I don't think I ever made it past the 6th stage. The one where there's the boss at the end who jumps around and shoots ... bullets? ... out at you.
So hard. Xp

I've still got my original Gameboy. With the box and everything.
And aside from the color Gameboy (the original Gameboy with different color casing, not Gameboy Color), I have every incarnation of the Gameboy that's been released so far.

Moving on systems I think Earthbound is a very good RPG! I dont own the game now (it was stolen). Breath of Fire 1 and 2 were good too!

Soma do you have a big collection of consoles?

Breath of Fire II remains to this day to be one of my favorite RPG's. :)
Earthbound and BoF were also very awesome, but I really loved BoFII for some reason.

Hm, depends on what you consider to be big.
Big compared to some people, small in regards to others.

My console collection:

Atari
Nintendo Entertainment System
Game Boy
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Gameboy Pocket
Sony Playstation
Nintendto 64
Gameboy Color
Sony Playstation 2
Gameboy Advance (original design)
Nintendo Gamecube
Gameboy Advance SP
Nintendo DS

No more Coleco Vision, though. My friend has it now. :D

Very nice collection man, I dont have old consoles because I lost them when I moved like three years ago.

A clasic for the original gameboy will be Kirby, its a very good game. Also I remember Metroid 2 (the original Metroid was awsome too).

I only got to play Kirby on the Gameboy once. I still prefer Kirby's Adventure on the NES. Quite possibly the best Kirby game ever. :D

But a guy on my bus back in grade school let me borrow Metroid II once.
So awesome. I'm just glad that I had the adapter for the Gameboy, or I would have spent a forune on batteries playing that game. :p

sensei-

Tetris cost me more than $100 on bateries, I didnt have the adapter at that time (im so glad Nintendo chage all that with Advance SP).
On SNES i used to play Killer Instinct and Street Fighter 2 turbo all the time with my friends. Those two have arcade versions and they are awsome!

This is turning in a conversation jejeje what do you think soma?

Heh heh! Sure is!
I remember playing a lot of Killer Instinct with my girlfriend when I first met her. :p
Turns out she doesn't really like video games, though. Weird, no?
And speaking of Street Fighter 2 Turbo, my friend and I accidentally broke one of his SNES controllers during one of the bonus stages in that game. XD

I use to play Contra with my ex all the time (I think she got tired of it jajajaja). I can't belice we still havent talk about Mega Man yet!!! Mega Man X is the best Mega Man game ever!!!

Ah, Megaman.
I still really love Megaman 2 and 4.
Megaman 4 was the first one I played, and 5 was the second.
Megaman 2 just really stands out in my memory because one of my best friends and I used to play that at his place all the time. That and Balloon Fight.

As far as the Megaman X games go, X3 was always my fav. Mostly because the bosses were just so cool. Especially Neon Tiger and Blizzard Buffalo.

I've played Dawn of Sorrow on the DS, and it was seriously awesome.
It's a series I should definitely get into.

Mortal Kombat II was always my favorite.
Recently, my friend (the one who I played Megaman 2 and Balloon Fight with when we were kids) and I went on a Mortal Kombat binge. We went to one of the used game shops in town and bought Mortal Kombat 1-3 for the SNES and stayed up all night playing them. :D
Good times, good times.
We also played through all of Megaman X in a few hours one night.
That was cool.

Thats the way games should be made again, I mean Nintendo its back with that kind of games on DS I hope the other companies follow up with Nintendo's Idea.

Wasn't that the one where you were a fallen angel or something like that?
I remember playing that a few years back when my friends moved back here from Ottowa. That was a cool game. I've been meaning to pick up Act Raiser 2 for the longest time, but haven't gotten around to it.
The used game store in my town still has a copy of it kicking around.

I'm an old school gamer all the way! I love the clunky old hardware too. I'd love to see a game like RPG Maker that lets you make old school 2-D action games. Anyone know of anything like that? I'd love to make a simple game based on my character.

sensei-
03-16-2006, 09:46 PM
You are like God and help people with their problems like killing monsters and stuff like that. You also can create the city the way you want to its pretty cool. Act Raiser 2 is not that good of a game if you consider it a sequel, you cant make your own city and thats a huge step backwards. Thanks to that game we have Dark Cloud nowdays

sensei-
03-16-2006, 09:48 PM
Jasper you shoud probably like RPG maker XP (its for windows) you can fully configure the game the way you want to and also create your own characters and sorrounding. I have RPG maker XP and I recomend it all the way! (its a little hard to understand at first but all RPG maker games are that way)

Zelda II was awesome, despite what people may say.
Seriously, what's the issue that people have with that game? It added a new depth to the Zelda series, and the story was awesome.
2-D side scrolling + Zelda = awesome

Simple. The combat was boring and monotonous and the need to spend ages doing it in order to level up was just plain dull.

Maybe I should go replay it then write an article....

The combat is no different from previous Zelda games. Sure, there are more classic style RPG elements rather than an adventure game, but it's still awesome.

It's completely different. It's in a different perspective, you get jumped by bloody mobs and then flung into a screen of unlimited combat, it contains levelling up, I could go on for days. It's a different game entirely.

Secret of Mana!

And theres alway the FF games, BoF, LoZ... but SoM was the best!

I've always like the stories in the Mana games, but I could never really play them.
I didn't like the battle system. The art is great, though.:D

There's a store in town that buys a lot of used games from people and then sells them. You never know what kind of rare games you'll find there.
I managed to get a copy of Breath of Fire with the box, Illusion of Gaia, and a few more.
It's a pretty awesome place.
They have games from the NES all the way up to the 360.

I used to have an NES and a Sega Genesis, but they're both gone now. =(
Now the oldest systems I have are my Dreamcast and my PS1.

Aw, that's sad.
But there's nothing wrong with having a DC and PSOne.
Both systems have some awesome games. Especially the Dreamcast. :D

My first system was an SNES and the first I ever started playing on it was Final Fantasy II(now Final Fantasy IV on GBA) and after a couple years when I was 8 I found a copy of Final Fantasy III at a yard sale-how lucky is that?Other than that I played all the Donkey Kong Country games and all Super Mario games for SNES including the rpg version which I apparently forgot the name.
I almost got a copy of Final Fantasy IV for SNES, the original one but my friend was an idiot and sold it to a game store

Hmm. I would have to say that Chrono Trigger is the best old school RPG that I personally have played, but there are many that I haven't played, so saying that it's THE best is a bit of stretch.

Still ... amazing game.
