My friend wants to go to a cosplay as Gaara from Naruto, but she doesn't know what to make the gourd out of. I said to make it out of papier-mache and she said no. So, what do you think? Do you think papier-mache is the way to go?:)
Anyone know what my friend should make the gourd out of?

What does you freind want to make it out of, sence she doesn't want to make it out if papier-mache. I think Papier-mache is probly going to be the cheapest way to make it.

She wants to buy one that is already made, but she can't find any at all. She saw some people who had the same kind of gourd and assumed that they had some where, where you could just buy one.
She later told me that she wanted to make one out of clay! And I said that would be way too heavy, but I think she still wants to do it.

I have been trying to tell her go towards something that is light weight. I think she would like the idea of finding a real gourd for the cosplay.:p

yup.....but i advise her not to fill it with sand....as that will be really heavy

That would be really heavy. But, she decided to tape to bouncy balls together and use masking tape to cover them and everything.:)

*fan girl scream* Gaara!!! *calms down* Bouncy balls should work. If they don't, she could always try using those really big balloon things that you strap to your wrist and punch.

What can me and my friend do for Naruto sandals? She is going to be Gaara so she is going to get black flip flops and modify them by putting material on them. That way they look like Gaara's sandals. I'm gonna be Hinata and I'm gonna do basically the same thing but have blue adidas kind of sandals. Does that sound good to you?:) Or should we do something different? We are trying to stay on the cheap side to do this.:p

That does sound like a good idea for the sandals. If that doesn't work out, maybe you could use water shoes. ^^

For the shoes: Cut up a sock and stick it over your foot. Cheapest way I can think of.
Um...she could try wonderflex for the gourd, it's really light.

For the sandals, here's a tutorial on how to make them yourself: http://liz.spain.googlepages.com/narutosandaltutorial
I made Gaara's gourd by duct-taping a 19" beach ball and one of those big playballs (30" diameter?) you can find at Wal-Mart or Targer together. Then, I covered the balls with several layers of strips of newspaper paper-mache. After it is dry, paint it with fleck-stone spray paint for a sandy texture and then finally paint the gourd the shade of tan you want. Several people other than myself have used my technique and it has worked well.
