if you are irrationally in love with the bauhaus, siouxsie, anne rice and the sandman, don't understand why people are "over" jhonen vasquez, accessorize in ankhs & hot topics keychains, don't see anything wrong with pleather pants, chances are you're a goth.
also dressing the part is key, unless you're over 30.

What happens if you're over 30? I'll stop wearing black when there's something darker (I'm 42).
My definition of goth is, those of us who try to see the beauty in the darker facets of existence.

i guess that was aimed in the direction of the really far-out fashion/makeup ensembles, which are kind of emblems (although not necessarily accurate representations) of goth culture to non-goths. i mean, if people can continue to pull off the look as they approach early middle age, more power to them---but as with members of most subcultures, it doesnt strike me that a majority of goths can do so.
in any event, black is always in good taste, and i find alot of the more subtle fashion adult goths sport to be seriously classy.
and of course your definition (in direct contrast to mine) takes a dignified, intelligent approach and implies that it's a mindset, and that one does not need a check list of interests and items to be considered "goth."

I am guilty of over 50% of those things, yet "being a goth" is the least of my problems -- at least I socialize.
I'm guessing that 90% of teenagers have been guilty of 5 or more of those things at many points in their lives: talks too much, talks too little, insists on spending time with friends unsupervised by an adult, complains of boredom...sounds like a typical teenager to me.

It's a label. Labels are not nice. Because you're sorting everyone into 'boxes', but, you cannot measure people by the same standards.

For the Record, Manson is a Satanist, which holds true for only a hanful of regular "goths":p
Goths were a germanic tribe that ransacked the Roman Empire, with little success, and eventually moved to Spain where they were defeated by Muslims.
Their style featured big stained glass windows, flying butresses, and the like
Nowadays, the term goth means as stated above...random, isn't it:D

-*****Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this.
-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)
-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.)
-Plays videos games that contains violence or are of a role-playing nature.
These made me roll on the floor, holding my gut
Gothic cereal? How low can they go? lol
I dressed in what is referred to as a gothic manner last year, but I am a very strong believer in God, prayer regularly, and am not afraid to tell people that (I dress preppy now, as I lost interest in constant black, though I still love gothic music ^_^). I think that many young teens have ruined the beauty of what gothic is, and made it a symbol of the devil and patheticness overall. Gothic is the beauty of what we cannot see, finding beauty in the darkest of times, and bringing yourself to another world that is all its own, not some satanic place for lame high schoolers to cut themselves. Although I am only thirteen, I have a deep understanding of the context of the word and feel it has become a piece of pop culture for the masses to throw around and place on people.

I've been a part of the Los Angeles/Hollywood gothic subculture for nearly my entire 40 years of life. I'm sure my family must had known I was a bit different after personally choosing Walt Disney's The Haunted Mansion to be my first story book record at age 5. I thought the Munsters and Addams Family were the perfect families~ they were fun and wore awesome unconventional clothes and lived in huge houses with secret passages and cool creatures. I wish Halloween Town was a real place to vacation at, but luckily there's at least Nightmare Before Christmas. I don't believe in mere labels, and I feel the gothic communities have unfortunately been, for the most part, sorely misunderstood over the many years. I'd like to share with everyone this informative link that plainly expresses many key points I believe to be true in what exactly the gothic movement is. (http://www.goth.net/goth.html) For me, personally, being gothic is a way of life, its a subculture and community that just happens to sometimes celebrate ...well, what the majority in society consider macabre~or even sometimes taboo. The macabre is not negative to me, nor are the darker things associated with death or the fanciful monsters we've created in our various folklore~ these are the things in life that give me countless inspirations for my art, designs and stories. What can I say, I love Hello Kitty, skulls & bats with equal adoration. ^__________^ And if I could, I'd have a tea party with Rawhead and Bloody Bones at Disneyland, CA.

Thank you SO much for that link~! I especially love this excerpt:
How Do I Become Goth?
I hate to break it to you, but Goth is not something you can just learn. Gothic people grew up that way. Most people do not have the genuine sense of wonder, creativity, talent, open-mindedness, and appreciation of the duality of existence, nor of themselves and their abilities that makes a person genuinely Goth. While some of these things can be learned over the course of years, most of it can only be emulated. To emulate something strongly implies that the action is neither original nor genuine. That is just not Goth.
Time and time again some of my lesser understanding family members would prattle and sneer, that how I was dressing and what I collected (anime & manga included), and the music I was listening to was only a phase. Or they'd try to blame it on my friends~! XD 35 years later, I still enjoy collecting the same things in addition to all the new things in life I've discovered. I was lucky to know what I liked (as opposed to just following along to what I was told I was supposed to like and then end up not really liking it) and I wasn't afraid to ever express myself. I do think being in the gothic scene -or any scene, is just a phase for some people, but for others, like myself and Rikki, it really is more than just a scene or image. We grew up with it and had no reason in the world to ever grow out of it~(much like how we're part of the Anime/Manga community <3). For me, especially as an artist, being part of the gothic community has been a very creative lifestyle that has always kept me inspired.
And no, Emo is not part of any gothic sub-genre.
Emo is Elmo without the "L" because it was too emo to be typed out.

my pleasure, i'm just sorry that more people don't read it! and it sucks that the original site doesn't work anymore :( oh well.
yeah emo is completely different, mostly people have a good idea of what it is, but google it, wiki it, or just ask around. mainly people will say it's goths gone wrong (which you all now know is wrong) or punks gone wrong (i'm not to nowledgable about punks) but mainly my perception of emo is that it's short for emotion(al) and it's people that often dress in black and/or dark possibly tight clothing and hang around in groups of other emos. another stereotypical sign of an emo is either/and/or lip rings, tongue piercing(s), nose rings, eyebrow rings etc.
another thing is that often alot of emos are quite depressed and thing about themselves alot and write poetry alot too (about themselves and their life) also (another alos i know) many emos practice self mutilation. these are just some of the ways that people refer to what emos are like.
i'm not saying in any way shape or form that all emos are like what i have just described and also personally i really dislike labels and wish they would all go away (but they won't).

i think that post was made a while ago in the heat of trying to make somebody else feel bad about not knowing something. of course several months later, it sounds dumb and pompous.
also, profound jealousy, because as much as i dislike his fans, i really do love jhonen's work and sense of humor/comic timing/etc/etc/etc/fanboy. i'm submitting my comics to a bunch of places, but slave labor is the dream, largely because of having been reintroduced into comics by jhonen's stuff--and all the positive full-circle life closure that fantasy involves.

i was going to make my first post to this forum elsewhere but this whole thread seemed to good to pass up.
i'd like to thank Tavisha for some reason in here.
most of what i read tends to be half stereotype and half fashion marketing.
yes you can dress "preppy" and still consider yourself goth.
there's no rules other than what you place on yourself.
i've pretty much worn all black my whole life, it's easier to throw together an outfit that way.
i've never labeled myself anything along music culture lines because if makes a bleeping or whirring sound, i'll dance to it.
(how else does one describe a music collection ranging from kraftwerk to skinny puppy to autechre to trance?)
but something happened in the mid 90's: people started throwing the word goth to describe anything that seemed 'dark'
what does Slipknot have anything to do with Peter Murphy?
answer: none. it was an easy term for music journalists unfamiliar with musical genres. just as quickly it became an easy marketing term for clothing chains.
(the store is called 'hot topic' for a reason, it jumps on trends.)
the term "goth" gets thrown around heavily but yet it doesn't seem to stick to certain things like mimes or priests.
they both wear all black.
mimes wear a huge amount of makeup and eyeliner.
priests, especially christian ones have some pretty dark tales to tell you from the bible, are they goth?
you can't judge a book by it's cover, but i think you can judge it based on it's cliff's notes.
p.s. - the name's Arick, glad to meet you folks. :D

if you are irrationally in love with the bauhaus, siouxsie, anne rice and the sandman, don't understand why people are "over" jhonen vasquez, accessorize in ankhs & hot topics keychains, don't see anything wrong with pleather pants, chances are you're a goth.
also dressing the part is key, unless you're over 30.
I love this post.
It seems like most "goths" these days think that goth music is My Chemical Romance.

A lot of them are free-thinking, creative-type intellectuals. Not to be confused with pretension. We just firmly know what we like and are never afraid to express it. This type of free expression is not a trend for us, its a lifestyle~ it just happens. ^__________^

obviously there's a certain amount of guidelines yet exceptions to those guidelines. there's a strong pull towards those concepts or there wouldn't be stereotyping.

I don't mean to offend but this is all very silly. Goth by the definitions I've read on this thread is utterly meaningless. There is no way to be goth because there is no set definition for it. The 'free-thinking' doesn't cut it either because anyone can be free-thinking. I think in the quest for not stereotyping you just ended up with nothing instead. *shrug*

(sorry for such a late reply here everyone)
I didn't say it made any free spirit goth~ I was just saying its one of the qualities I've found in goths. >____<*** I don't like the word guidelines~ because that implies rules...I don't think there's any set "rules" for people in the gothic community. I think if there's any similarities, such as wearing black, or listening to the same music, its not coming from any set rules~ but rather just like-minded thinking. Basically, many goths just happen to like black and the same type of music, but there's no rules or set guidelines that you have to wear black or must listen to a certain band just to be goth.

Well, being part of the subculture isn't meaningless to us. :D I find its very fun~(never a dull moment),creative and intellectually rewarding. For me, being a goth is more a philosophy in life than a side freak show. I do think its silly if someone wakes up one day and says; "I think I'll become goth today based on what I was told it was all about". Because if you are goth ~you just *are* and you don't have to be told anything about it. You usually gradually grow into it and if you are a true goth, you never grow out of it. For instance, I've pinpointed my first simple gothic loves at an early age~ when I was 3 I loved playing with those hinged paper skeletons (I just thought they were adorable) and rubber bats & spiders~ I couldn't wait for Halloween when we could carve pumpkins and dress in costumes and run around the neighborhood in the dark with glowsticks and flashlights~as a kid, I loved Halloween even more than Christmas~! People in the gothic communities discovered the movement based on our own likes, dislikes, beliefs and decisions. And it all has personal meaning for us. ^____^ You just are or aren't~ and trying to explain it to most who aren't is near impossible. But stereo typing it or not~ it still is *something*. For me, its just the love and celebration for the darker; more macabre things in life.

you can't say how much you need to be identified as something, but one can certainly spot when someone isn't something, right?
a Glittergal90 put it: stereotypes do have some truth to them, or they wouldn't be stereotypes. that's the fun thing about fashion or subcultures, we're not supposed to have guidelines, but if we didn't how could we identify anything?

Ooooh~ I love Sisters Of Mercy too and was lucky to catch them on their Floodland tour in LA waaaay back in the early 90's. As for Rozz Williams, he was one of those gothic LA icons, so growing up with him appearing at the local clubs was my nostalgia even more so than his music. Acoustics were pretty crappy in the small club venues then, so being there was the thrill rather than trying to sort out the live music from the vocals. Alien Sex Fiend was proably theeee worst live I've ever experienced~ but it was still fun just being there. Then again, local band, Ex-Voto could always pull off a great live show. XD My absolute favorite spooky bands of the times was Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxie Sioux and my all-time 80's icon obsession is still Marc Almond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Almond). Go fig~Marc is classified as electronic/dark wave/cabaret, but I love his raw & gritty take on the sordid subjects in his songs. He is quite the character~:D

Goth is a type of lifestyle, just like emos, rockers, and ginos have their own lifestyle. All of those groups have their own subculture with their individual style and taste in music. Sure goths can be creative and individual, but so can non goths. To me it's just a style of clothing, music, and a more dark and romantic view on life. Does it have to be anymore than that?

I agree~it is a lifestyle & it has developed its own subculture and it doesn't have to be anything more or less. Everyone has their own personal reasons for living the way they choose.
Also, just to clear up anyone who might think that goths are only going to hang out with other goths~ Of course, I also have plently of creative friends who share similar views on life and have many things in common with and *gasp* they aren't wearing black or have a dozen tatoos & piercings. ^_______^

Someone posted this whatchamacallit that was sent to her on another forum.
Presented by St. Mary's Church Listed below are some warning signs to indicate if your child may have gone astray from the Lord. Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture thatyoung teenagers are prone to participating in. The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counselling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan's temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child.
-Frequently wears black clothing.
-Wears band and/or rock t-shirts.
-Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nail polish.
-Wears any odd silver jewelry or symbols.
-Shows an interest in piercings or tattoos.
-Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson claims to be the anti-Christ, and publicly speaks against the Lord. Please discard any such albums IMMEDIATELY.)
-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.
-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.
-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.
-Takes drugs.
-Drinks alcohol.
-Is suicidal and/or depressed.
-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation. (This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.)
-Complains of boredom.
-Sleeps too excessively or too little.
-Is excessively awake during the night.
-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.
-Spends large amounts of time alone.
-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your chid may speak to evil sprits through meditation.)
-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult. -Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.
-Misbehaves at school.
-Misbehaves at home.
-Eats excessively or too little
-Eats goth-related foods.
-Plays videos games that contains violence or role-playing nature.
-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer. -Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.
-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.
-Expresses an interest in sex.
-Masturbates.
-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.
-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism.
-Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a goth".
-Claims to be a goth.
If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.

I mean, if you're American its because you were born in America or your parents are America (or another reason i don't know of). If you're a blond you have blond hair. Novels and music have genres that may have sub genres but all have something in common. You can't write a book about a soppy romance between two high school kids and call it a Mystery. A yaoi fangirl is a girl who likes yaoi. There's a reason for labels and genres.
What I'm trying to understand is, what is the point of being goth if it doesn't even have a basic outline? A yaoi famgirl who doesn't like yaoi is NOT a yaoi fangirl, even if she somehow in her mind thinks she is.

It's called non-conformity. By conforming to a social group that isn't hte mainstream, you make yourself believe you're somehow expressing individuality.

Well, until they tell us what goth is, I wish they'd stop telling us what it isn't. Maybe goths are inhuman.
I need to know~ What is Yampuff? I thought it was just a japanese snack. XD But really, what *IS* Yampuff, Yampuff? :D

You're absolutely right~! ^_______^ There is no point because apparently its not FOR you. What I don't understand is why all the fuss? Who cares? Why does it command your attention when its not your thing? I didn't learn how to be goth from a list of Do's and Don'ts ~I just happened to find others of similar sensibilities~I can't speak for others, but for me it just *happened* and from what I could tell, it started at a very early age. ^________^
What is a goth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth)? In a very broad general sense, its usually someone who enjoys the more macabre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macabre) things in "life"~ and that it generally has a reflection on how they dress, what they watch and listen to and what they might create.

One thing I've learned is that simply wearing black all the time doesn't make you goth. I had a friend who use to wear nothing but black. Not because she wanted to be goth, but because she believed wearing black clothing made her look skinnier.

goth is when people lose touch with humanity
no, no, no that's Cybermen.
unless they're Mondasian or Telosian Cybermen then they're semi-human,
close enough to share organs, blood, and replacement cybernetic parts and programming. but what do you expect when your planet was Earth's twin and you spiralled out of our solar system?
then again Cybermen could be goth, i mean they do have those teardrops on the sides of their eyes?
i believe the cybermen and hot topic share the same slogan as well:
"you will become like us."

Oh god, I'm a goth. Except that can't be right. Agh! Bloody generalisations.

These are all definitions the top being official the next 2 being more....romanticized.
In reality goth is simply some one dark wearing dark clothes, dark hair, dark makeup...ect liking dark music and dark activities, they want to be different and say we'll i'm being different.
But in reality they are being sheep and falling into a sub culture alot of people do it, there is no such thing as true individuality, free will is but an illusion and we like to think we have it and make are own choices but every thing we do and say is influenced by what is around us.

as Aratos pointed out, that pretty much condemns anyone who's ever liked a black comedy.
heck by that logic i'm goth simply for my job as a makeup effect artist.
(and the fact i only have solid employment for the halloween season)
god i love playing around with these guidelines too much...

Exactly~ but the post was giving a base "guideline" for Yampuff who seems to think goth is *NOTHING* unless its pigeoned holed into something she can understand. XD So, the best I could do was give her the Muggles explaination.
Enjoys the macabre?

There, there, its ok~ there's a little goth in all of us. There's nothing to fear~ :D

I think I'm slowly easing into the Goth style, if not the entire image.
Then again, the only Goth's I ever talk to are the people who work at Hot Topic and that cute little scary shop I just found near the library. They are total sweethearts! <3
That being said, I've noticed that I'm acquiring a lot of black shirts, and was just thinking about getting a new belt and a collar to match my black kitty ears from that previously mentioned store. The thought of stompy black shoes made me notice the unusual fashion choices (for me. I usually wear various shades of blue).
Too bad they dont' make headphones with kitty ears.

I think Gothic's are romantic and dangerously sexy, I don't know why but I think the color black on a hot young man just makes me stare... Yeah, my friends say I have a gothic mind... and I was once called gothic by an idiot while wearing pink. Funny huh, I think it just depends on the person. You can love the stlye but hate the life style or visrsa versa. Defenitions vary from person to person....

I've been called gothic many times just becasue I wear a lot of black and happen to be Pagan (which is what my mother raised us with so I couldn't really help that). I don't even know what Goth really is. I do know however, that it's the name of a horror trivia game I have (that has questions that have nothing to do with horror trivia which is totally stupid). And I know that really all-out goths wear really white make up, black eyeliner, nailpolish and lipstick, wear lots of black, platforms, ect., like that one couple I ran into in Hot Topic one time.... and then ran into again a few minutes later as they were coming out of Old Navy. :P

I think there are different types of goths... Hot topic goths, kids who look like their walking advertisements for the store are the ones I've been seeing a lot of... But their not the only types of goth style out there, I know a few "goths" who absolutely hate the store hot topic, they don't dress anything like the hot topic kids. And I'm sure there are a few other types as well.
I don't know.... Labels confuse the hell outta me. =/

tell me about it.
there's like 2 dozen different sub genres of drum n bass and like about 3,000 different types of metal.
then again that's music. but at the same time that's very heavily factored into fashion.
explain to me this one people: why is it that goth nights at clubs don't actually play goth?
they spin industrial, ebm, and synthpop, but hardly ever any goth?
