I know there are probably more than I know out there, but over the past year I've got the chance to see several 18+ rated anime's and mangas. Dunno why but it surprised me how good they were :D

The two that i've watched in the last couple months were Berserk and Elfin Lied. Well putting the blood aside, the stories were both awesome. But I surely I won't recommend them to people that get traumatized by gory scenes.

For manga, I've read the series SAIKANO, which i sure didn't know how it was gonna be like, but it sure had a high wow factor from me ^^' I haven't read berserk the manga (just cause I'm broke) and Elfin lied isn't translated yet (will probably try to get the japanese imports online since I can read japanese :D ) Lastly, I've heard Battle Royal was good but havent found vol. 1 at the store i go to (observe the lack of effort, excuse me)

anyways yeah. FMA and Naruto rock too.

I find myself attracted to more of the M rating, big seller for me. I haven't watched alot of M rated anime, but I have a few 18+ manga. Battle Royal was my first M rated manga, and I was very shocked when I first read it, very graphic. Plus it had been the second manga I had ever read, the first being Sailor Moon, so the jump from that to people having to kill each other to survive was umm an interesting experience. That was a few years back and since then I am all for blood, gore, and sex. Oh my hehe

Forget M rated, let's go full blown hentai.

I loved Sheila's Diary. Sure, it was porn, but the story was amazing. The growth of Ayaka from the victimized girl to the powerful, confident woman and lover was deeply touching. And hot. :D

I am actually a huge seinen manga fan. It's my #1 most read genre... despite the fact that I'm a girl.
Anyway, some of my favorites are stuff like Homunculus (Yamamoto Hideo) and Tokyo Akazukin (Tamaoki Benkyo): gory, heavy, story and visual driven stuff.
But, I also often go for just crazy avant-violence like Horihone Saizou's or Kago Shintaro's work.

I've read a few M rateds. Warriors of Tao was the only one I was really that impressed by though.
As for Battle Royale, it's good if you haven't read the book. Otherwise, opinion on it's horribly divided between those of us who think it's heresy and those who actually like it. There's a lot of unneccessary swearing and the like dragging it down unfortunately. And the fact that every other insane girl seems to be from a christian background just doesn't seem right seeing as it's meant to be in Japan and all. The violence is good though. Much more flinch-inducing than the novel in its way.

I usually don't mind 18+ manga series... but I make the exception at Battle Royale. The art seriously bothers me, and all of the random sex and violence don't seem to go with the style. Also I dislike all of the slang they use... and everything is just so dramatic.
Give me the movie version any day.

Fake was a very cute series, if a bit unrealistic.

Evil's Return makes me cry inside.

But I'll give any series a try, regardless of its rating!

Well, there are quite a few Christian girl's-schools all over Japan. Being a student there is not necessarily limited to Christians, howeved.
I used to pass one on the way to school when I lived in Kyoto. They had very ugly brown jumpers as their uniform.

I love Battle Royale. The manga is great and the films are great. I think I prefer the manga story wise as it makes more sense because it follows all the characters properly rather than a select few. Visually wise, I prefer the film, I guess the colour helps.

My first 18+ rated animès I saw were Adventure Duo, Devil Man and Urotsukidoji.

I love the first two, the last one though? *shudders*

Like Rei Hino/Sailor Mars who is a Miko, so obviously a follower of Shinto but who attends a prestigious Catholic Girls' school.

Anyway back on topic, I like Sensual Phrase but Aine can be a bit too submissive at times.

I've got the first volume of the Arm of Kannon manga, thats pretty awesome. I've also seen a few anime such as Urotsukidoji and Ninja Scroll which were also both cool :D

I think sometimes the violence and sex can make an anime or manga really great, especially in a really gritty, evil story!

My favorite M rated Anime is (and probably always will be) Elfen Lied. So tragic and devistating.

Hentai is another story. I won't talk about it. *blush* Eh heh.

A real good M-rated manga would be Blade of the Immortal and Berserk. One charcter from Blade of the Immortal had gotten his hand cut off so he sharpen the bone to use as a weapon for revenge:eek: . They both have gory action but a good story as well. Gunsmith Cats is a oldie but goodie and I so wish I had Rally's 1969 Shelby Corba Mustang GT 500. The car scenes are some of the best in all of manga

Seems no one's watched X. The movie, which is widely considered to be the worst effort from CLAMP/MADHOUSE, is ridiculously violent. Literally all but one character dies, and some are just randomly killed off. Thank goodness the TV series made up for it.

I own the VHS or DVD. Man you're hurting my head by making me think so far back in the past. Anyways, yes, I do agree that X: The Movie was garbage, literally. X: TV though, was much better.

Anyways, so any hentai title is M rated I guess....

Bible Black is a good one...

But for an M title that's not hentai, I guess, Gantz, and Wicked City works.

One of my favorites M for M4tur3 series is Elfen Lied. I had to watch it like 2 separate people.
The first was the person in me who likes sex and violence (he tends to be out most of the time). The other one was the insightful person, the one who apreciated Elfen Lied for its story, a very cute love story (have to let this guy out more often).
Almost all of my friends, whom I lended this series, have told me they love it. However, when I lended it to my girlfriend, well you can imagine what happend........ she didn't pass the first 10 min of the first ep. hehehe

I just remembered something funny. when I was in elementary school, the parents council whanted so badly to stop us from watching DB and DBZ that they made a puppet show or something like that to try to convince us that master roshi was an old lecher (spelling). All this happened because the parents thought that DB and DBZ were and M cartoon. However, they didn't have any problem with us watching the Simpsons and all those crappy mexican soap operas.

Hahaha. My elementary wouldn't let us watch Pokemon or bring the trading cards to school for fear of, not only mature content, but also to keep the older kids from selling fake cards to the younger kids.

I like M stuff, Battle Royale, Battle Vixens, Berserk, Lady Snowblood, Reiko the Zombie Shop, Gantz, MPD Psycho, Tokyo Akazukin. I'm also fairly twisted. As for the whole discussion about schools telling you not to watch DBZ (which I am all for DBZ bites) or bring your Pokemon cards to school makes me feel very old, until I was in high school nobody (besides me) had even heard of anime/manga let alone start to fear it.

The live action of battle Royale was interesting. Someone told me it was banned in Japan, although I'm not sure if that's true. I've watched elfen lied, and it's okay. Kind of stupid how the killer of a boy's family meets at the killer at the same place years later, both getting there at about the same time. M-rated animes:
Gantz - the first 21 eps were awesome, but the last 5 sucked eggs... stupid filler/studio created fight to tie up the end of the series...
Elfen Lied - I've only had my brother and one of my gal friends watch this, but they both loved it, for the violence/gore, and for the touching story.
And, yeah, if hentai is considered M-rated, then a whole bunch of other stuff. Mezzo probably being one of the better ones.

M-rated manga:
Saikano - this story was so heart-wrenching, it's not even funny... I can't wait for the anime OVA to be released...
Warriors of Tao - this series was so over-the-top story- and art-wise, and the fact that it's unfinished, though the author hopes to be able to finish it someday...
Remote - excellent series, though they started out OT, they switched up to M after volume 4 or so...
Battle Vixens/Ikki Tousen - It took them 'til volume 8 to give it an M, but the content should have been an M all along, if they hadn't edited so much of the nudity and violence.
Battle Club - Same author as Battle Vixens, should be awesome. Starting with an M-rating *crosses fingers*.
Steel Angel Kurumi - The first two volumes were 18+, but then blasted ADV Manga started editing it, and dropped the rating to 16+...

Can we talk about Kite a little bit? I've seen both versions, and I actually like the censored version better. The sex in the "director's" version seems gratuitous, and at one point doesn't even make sense (the one after the fall).

Mezzoforte -- I've only seen the "dirty" one, and that one was okay -- kind of needed to be for one of the punchlines.

Other than that, can't say I really enjoy the pornographic anime ("hentai"?) -- I keep trying to watch it and like it, but end up just feeling embarrassed.

Cool Devices...OMG!

But when it comes to manga, it seems I've only ever read the harder stuff -- Blade of the Immortal, Berserk, Battle Royale, Ghost in the Shell (especially Man-Machine Interface was pretty ... *ahem* ... mature, but the artwork was nice). Obviously, based on this thread, I need to check out Warriors of Tao -- any others?

My first M-rated manga was Sword of the Dark Ones. I had been waiting for this manga to come out for a while. I don't really care much about the ratings, but when I saw that it was wrapped I thought "H*** Naw!" (bad experience with walking back home from the mall to get my ID because someone wouldn't let me buy Devil May Cry 3:Special Edition. First time ever I had to show my ID to buy a game.) I grabbed the book and didn't have to show ID so it was cool. But the book was AWESOME!! Later that week I went and picked up volumes 2 and 3. It was only 3 volumes long but is one of my favorites.

Okay, short edit to my last post, just to draw attention, then new stuff... TP has been re-releasing earlier volumes of Battle Vixens with an M rating that were originally released with an OT, awesome!

On top of that, Battle Club volume 1 is out and awesome, and a good one to pick up would be the original JP versions of Tenjou Tenge, which you can buy from animegamersusa.com, and read them next to CMX's edited down version... if they hadn't butchered this series, it easily would have been rated M, if not a new AO rating, like 21+ only, or something. It gets REALLY violent, and twisted sexual torture and stuff after volume 11-12 or so... like Battle Vixens on crack.

As for 18+ anime, I've been reviewing a bunch of stuff lately, and I'd have to say that Princess 69 is really good, visual- and content-wise, but practically no story, and SexFriends and Angelium are both crap. Aishimai 1 + 2 (Immoral Sisters) is decent, and of course, Bible Black has to have one of the most developed stories for a hentai. It helps that it's 8 episodes, whereas most are 2-4.

PS> And as a note about Elfen Lied. In Japan, they have an R-15 rating for broadcast shows, which is pretty much the equivalent of an R rating in America. It means that the show is not meant for anyone under 15 years of age, which would definitely include Elfen Lied. Believe it or not, more than half the episodes of the new Full Metal Panic series 'The Second Raid' had an R-15 rating for broadcast. It has a lot more graphic violence than the first season, and they don't block the nudity like they did in Fumoffu...

What is a 'M' rated manga mean??
An M rated manga is manga intended for Mature readers. In the US, an M rating is usually issued for manga containing sexual and/or violent content/subject matter or offensive language that American society prefers to restrict to those who are at least 18 years old. An M rating for manga is comparable to an R rating in the US movie industry.

Awww man, I love Angel Sanctuary. ^^ The drawings are so gorgeous!

>> Unfortunately, I'm currently only 17 so I can't get my grubby little paws on too many M-rated manga.

As for hentai, I've only watched one or two for the heck of it. Both were intended to be more humorous than anything else. ^^() Don't remember the titles though.

Either way, I don't care how much sex/violence is in a manga or anime, just as long as it has a good plot. ^^

Some 'M' rated mangas arn't really that bad....like Angel Sanctuary!

Angel Santuary isn't M rated though. It's 16+ and even then I've seen 14 year olds reading it.

the ghost in the shell manags are a M for a reason ive seen the pages in question that makes them M lol

also lady snowblood has a parental advisory but not an m rating even though their is sex/nudity/violence involved

TP went through a phase where they threw PA labels on almost all their 'OT 16+' mangas for a while. I think I've got two volumes each of GetBackers and Ai Yori Aoshi with PA's on em, and volumes of Battle Vixens, Escaflowne, and Abenobashi, as well as others... it's kinda weird, when I look through the series, and random volumes have warnings on them, and others don't, and they all have the same rating. Oh well, I believe in TP.

I love M rated mangas and animes but sometimes they shoe more gory and sex stuff and have a poor storyline.

I actually find that most of TP's manga is rated 13+ plus. Only a few of the mangas I own from TP are like Angel Sanctuary and Ceres, are 16+. Most of them are not much worse than what is already depicted in the 13+ manga besides the odd curse word or bief nudity, which alot of 13+ mangas have anyways.

Most of them are not much worse than what is already depicted in the 13+ manga besides the odd curse word or bief nudity, which alot of 13+ mangas have anyways.

Let me write a short list of TP series that are rated 16+ or higher...
Abenobashi (OT)
A.I. Love You (OT)
Ai Yori Aoshi (OT)
Battle Club (M)
Battle Vixens (first OT, changed to M after volume 6)
BLAME! (OT)
Boys Be... (OT)
Chobits (OT)
Devil May Cry 3 (OT)
Dues Vitae (OT)
GetBackers (OT)
Girls Bravo (volume 3- on is OT)
Hyper Police (OT, considered a hentai manga when it was originally released in Japan)
Immortal Rain (OT)
In Dream World (OT)
Love Hina (volume 1-2 were 13+, 3-final were OT)
Mahoromatic (OT)
Psychic Academy (10?- and 11 were rated OT, since they finally stopped covering up all the nudity, and the violence got more intense)
Qwan (volume 1-2 were 13+, 3 was OT)
Remote (supposed to be rated M, but the first several volumes had graphic violence that TP mosaiced and released as OT, but finally stopped after volume 3 and changed it to M)
Saiyuki + Saiyuki Reload (OT)
Samurai Deeper Kyo (OT)
Scryed (OT)
sToNE (OT)
Suikoden III (the last couple volumes have been more violent, so are now OT)
Telepathic Wanderers (OT)
Vision of Escaflowne (OT)
Warriors of Tao (rated M)
Yubisaki Milk Tea (rated M)

And that's not even all the series that TP has released at OT, or above, just the series I own... and yes, some of them aren't that bad, like Chobits or GetBackers, but some of them, like the 'Battle' series by Shiozaki-sensei and Ai Yori Aoshi have tons of nudity in them, and Warriors of Tao is extremely violent, with eyeballs and body parts flying every couple pages...

Besides TP doesn't even release either of those series... Angel Sanctuary and Ceres are both released by Viz... unless that's what you were trying to state.

Nekochii

Only a few of the mangas I own from TP are like Angel Sanctuary and Ceres.

Key word "like". Sorry if that came out wrong. What I was trying to say is only some of TP's manga deal with contraversial themes like religion and incest like Angel Sanctuary dose.

'Battle' series by Shiozaki-sensei and Ai Yori Aoshi have tons of nudity in them, and Warriors of Tao is extremely violent, with eyeballs and body parts flying every couple pages...

By the way you've proven your point. I haven't read those ones yet, but now I want to. The only 16+ mangas I've read are ones like Chobits and Girls Bravo which I don't find that bad. As you can see, the manga selection at my local book store are very limited.

06-24-2006, 10:04 AM
Ah... that's what I was hoping you meant...
On a side note, I'm glad so few of their series deal with that stuff, cause I get enough of it in real life, I don't want to read about it in my leisure time, but that's just me... I'm not a real 'enrich your life, read a book' kinda guy. I like to read fictional stuff. Like most of the stuff I listed, heh...

Guess what... you ARE right...
I was browsing their forums the other day, and yeah, they don't release a lot of "manga" series, per se, but practically all of them are mature 18+ content... there are a few exceptions, like Trigun and Exxaxion (though that one is controversial right now), but yeah, most of their series are M...

well, I wouldn't really know, because I've never bought anything from DH, mainly because almost all their series ARE rated M or 18+, whatever, and I'm a big sucker for artwork... I prefer stuff that has a real solid feel to it, character and background wise, and the covers have to draw me in. Because most of their stuff is mature, it's almost all shrink-wrapped, so if the cover doesn't draw my interest, I can't look inside it to see what the actual artwork looks like. It's like Faerie's Landing... I'd never have bought that series based off the covers, but after browsing through the first volume, decided I really liked it... and from what the covers of DH series show me, it looks like most of them are gritty, pencil-stroke type mangas, and I really don't like that artstyle, whether it has a good story or not. There's just too much manga out there to drop $12-$15 on a DH book I may not like, when I prefer reading stuff like Ikki Tousen, Tenjou Tenge, or Girls Bravo... I'm not dissing them, but just, I'll probably never be a DH customer... oh well.

the reason their shrinkwrapped is because of mature rating but some bookstores you can go to their unshrinkwrapped cause someone else has already read it. You'd like lady snowblood you can see some similarities to kill bill

DH isn't for everyone, but I do agree that the cover is usually what draws people to pick up the book in the first place. The shrinkwrap is usually what generates curiousity too but that's because you wonder how bad it could possibly be to have that extra precaution added to it. All in all, M rated manga dosen't phase me, its just that it's rated that way usually because of the graphic content as in fanservice and cheecake rather than content. If you have read Confidential Confessions, that has no particular cheesecake in any form but the content featured is very "graphic" as in discussing the subjects of rape and suicide among teenage students. I would like to see more M rated content for this reason rather than because it's got the occational nip slip or panty shot because it gives the Mature rating more meaning.

I know what you mean. I just picked up the box set the other day, although I've owned a bootleg for a while now I still like to own the official set, Ikki Tousen is simply a good show.

PS> you may wanna make your sig a *LOT* smaller before the mods see it... mine was just deleted and I had to go make this new one...

Anywayz,
@Fighterspledge- I agree with you. The main reason I picked up Warriors of Tao was because it was shrinkwrapped... it made me curious... But I also like series that aren't rated M just for violence or sex... Yubisaki Milk Tea is rated M (which I mentioned earlier), but it's a really touching story about a teenage boy who enjoys cross-dressing, and gets into all kinds of trouble because of it... yeah, there's a little bit of nudity, but nothing that isn't OT equivalent.

@alucard666- not to start trouble or get myself shot or anything, but I don't really like the look of any of the GitS mangas... I like the movie and SAC anime, but that's it... I might check out Basilisk, if there's a returned/opened copy next time I go to the bookstore, but sadly, I doubt it's for me... Most of my violent M-rated series need to have cute girls minus clothes to be worth buying... if it's NOT M, then they can keep their clothes on... like... ummm... well, never mind.

The GITS manga isn't as good as the anime, but the first film was based on it, and the book goes into more detail.

Testarotho is rather good, and a short series.

Death Note is one of my favourite series, though it is an OT.

You know, I've thought about picking that up, except for my whole boycott of CMX thing I have going on... and I've got RBHS... had to go through the whole year and a half wait for the last volume... man, THAT was painful.

@random_pie> I'm actually reading volume 6 of Death Note right now... that series is so awesome it makes my brain hurt just to read it.

@CafeSociety> Category:Freaks is a really good series. I think more people should read it.

Also, I guess I can add this in, Eiken. The first several volumes were rated 16+, but volume 4 that came out about a month ago was rated 18+, and all 4 volumes so far have PA warnings on the covers. It's really fan-service heavy, but it's got a cute storyline...

It controls their clothes yes, but it also depicts the fact that they are a slave race... it has nothing to do with just the girls... even the males are slaves. Look at Khi-kun in the manga... I own the anime, but haven't watched it yet, and so far in the manga, I'm still not sure whether the DearS are aliens or androids... it kinda keeps flipping back and forth... and no one tell me, I wanna find out on my own.

The First 18+ manga that I got was Battle Royale, I'm up to vol 11 and am trying to find the remaining four. It's Bloody Brilliant ^_^ (I'm holding my own Battle Royale related event pretty soon as sonn as I aquire more BB Guns XD with the pain and the guns and the whatnots XD)

It's funny, When I bought my Vols of Ai Yori Aoshi they were rated OT 16+ (some might be M 18+, I'll have to double check)

Even Love Hina is rated OT 16+, I don't know where people are finding it M 18+ because it's definitely not 18+ material.

But there is one that I have that should be considered M 18+ and that's Reiko The Zombie Shop. I have Vols 1-3 so far and omg, It should definitely be M 18+

What do you all think?

Ps. Wow, didn't expect to type so much for my first post on this thread ^_^;

The only M rated Manga I've read is the first volume of Uzumaki. It SO didn't deserve the rating, though. It should have been rated T. Do the second/third volume get a lot worse? I have flipped threw a volume of Battle Royal at a store, but I didn't read the whole thing, if that counts.

Yeah, Evil's Return is OT...

And I agree with your other statement, too. Yubisaki Milk Tea is an awesome series.

@ranma8> Well, I've never heard of Uzumaki, but be glad it got the M rating now, so they don't HAVE to edit things that are graphic later on. DH Comics messed up Cannon God Exxaxion by rating it T, then had to edit out the extreme violence and nudity that came with later volumes. And don't forget TT...
