well im the friend that was dumb enough to nownot know that... needless to really say is that i never saw the series and i just caught a few moments of the movie. i know now -_- that shes a girl

Don't feel so bad, Ronginusu. Ed was originally intended to be a boy when the show was first created. In fact, in the demo episode that was created to sell the series, Ed was still a boy. Shortly before the series went into full production, they changed Ed's character from male to female in order to balance out the gender ratio. However, they decided not to change the character's name or the character's look. Pretty much all they did was make Ed's cheeks really, really pink.

In the series, there's a running gag that most people don't know Ed's a girl when they first meet her. If I remember right, the last line of Ed's introductory episode is Spike saying "You're a girl!?" So given how little you saw of Ed, based on what you said, it's not surprising that you thought she was a he. :)

I actually thought that she was a guy the first time I saw her too. But I figured out that she was a girl not too long after that. She's one of my fave characters. My first fave is Gren though.
