I suppose any listing of my fav anime would have to start with the collected works of Leiji Matsumoto, best known as the genius behind Captain Herlock (or Harlock, as he's better known stateside). While there are many great modern anime series, every otaku on the planet owes it to himself to get educated in the classics. Matsumoto's work is a great place to start. And do I even need to mention Osamu Tezuka? If you haven't read the Buddha or Pheonix sagas, go ye now to your local bookstore and do so. What, you're still here? GO!!!

As for more recent works, the following come to mind:

Naruto (a whole world of ninjas - what's not to like?)
Samurai Champloo (swords and hip-hop - a perfect combo)
Ronin Warriors (started it all for me)
Cowboy Bebop (but of course...)

Haven't been exposed to as much anime as I'd like to be :p (I'm working on it!) but some of my favorites in no order would be...

Fruit's Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Berserk, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (I'm pretty sure that one is considered to be an anime), Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball Z, and from what little I've seen of Samurai Shamploo, I've liked. If you're talking movies, I'd say Howl's Moving Castle, Steamboy, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Akira.

Series? I'm more of a manga fan...mainly because I've seen so many of my more loved manga series butchered by English dubbing and localization. If you've seen 4Kid's rendition of One Piece, then you know what I'm talking about. Not extremely happy with Naruto either, although it IS still pretty early to make too many judgments.

Anyway, I'd have to say Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and...

Nope, that's it. I used to like many others, but even since I discovered the degree to which they're edited and how much it costs to get unedited versions, I don't watch much anime anymore.

Personally, I loved Brigadoon, once I got past the first few episodes. The anime was such a huge improvement over the manga (which was already pretty good) that I just couldn't stop watching. Cardcaptor Sakura is another one of my old favorites, but the ending of the anime just didn't stack up. Genshiken was good, but didn't add much to the manga. Oh... and I can't forget Gunslinger Girl.

I've got a few contenders for top spots that I've recently started watching, like Rune Soldier and Petite Princess Yucie, and I'm looking forward to watching more Princess Tutu when I finally get around to ordering it.

I LOVE inuyasha and rurouni kenshin? i do like naruto, too, so i agree with u guys there. anyone seen Read or Die? it isn't a series, but it's really good. i've only seen it once, though... i used to watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, but i missed a few episodes, and lost track of what was happening, but Samurai Champloo is awesome! I agree with arai_lyra on the matter of Noir! It's my favorite series, but I also really like Ghost In The Shell:Stand Alone Complex, especially Second Gig. I'm a big Tachikoma fan... (I am also glad to see the Major's salary got raised so she could buy some actual clothing. :p)
My favorite movie would be either The Place Promised In Our Early Days or Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. I think ...Early Days wins out there.

Are things by Miyazaki considered Anime? Well, anything by him I love (I watched all his movies except for My Neighbourgh Tortoro) and I can't wait to watch that one.

Also, I absolutly love the Furuba (Fruits Basket) anime. It's so very cute but the ending is not satisfying at all! Anyhow.

The SM (Sailor Moon) episodes were great and I miss them. They are what I plan to try and find next, I wanna watch them again! :D

FMA is my absolute favorite. I started buying the dvds (I don't watch it on tv so I am behind everyone else who follows it on adult swim) The storyline is so complex and amazing, and I love the character design.

I also love DN Angel, Petite Princess Yucie, Orphen, Kaleido Star, Cromartie High School, Madlax, Princess Tutu (can be a bit corny, but it's so cute), Inu Yasha (haven't watched it in ages, though), Area 88, Diamond Daydreams, Cowboy Bebop...I think that's it but I'm not sure.

The story set many standards for what all other Majo shoujo anime would be measured against, and so far, none have toppled it.
It may seem repetitive at times, but the underlying messages about friendship and love make it well worth watching until the end.;)

It's hard to pick a favourite. For anime I'd have to say Inuyasha for the moment. I've only seen the japanese version because I can't sit through the dub. I'm not used to the heavy american accents and I just end up laughing the whole way through. For some reason I have a soft spot for Digimon Season 1+2 even though I really hated it when it first came out. For some reason I never really liked Love Hina. I sat through the whole anime but it's never been a favorite of mine. I can't figure out why since it's technically a good show and a lot of other people like it. Maybe I have a basic dislike for harem shows. After all, I never liked Tenchi either. I liked Please Teacher so much more.

I love so many anime but I would have to say the ones i like the most are Gundam Wing, Card Captor Sakura, Weiss Kreuz, Blue Seed, Chobits, Yami No Matsuei, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Hikaru No Go, Shaman King, X/1999 (the tv series), Dragon Drive, Getbackers, DNAngel, Scryed, Full Metal Alchemist and Samuri Deeper Kyo.
