The new series of Doctor Who starts on Sci-Fi tommorrow (March 17th). I've seen it already of course as it aired over here in the UK last year but I'm really looking foward to it finding new fans in the USA! I also can't wait till series 2 airs over here (looks like it'll be some time in April).
Anyone else a fan?

I didn't think Eccleston was very good as the Doctor really. And I really didn't like Billia Piper as an assistant, which sort of spoiled the series for me. Not to mention I'm used to three-part serials. The next series looks like it should be an improvement though. Tenant seems a much better Doctor, on top of which Sarah Jane's gonna be returning, and being a huge fan of the Tom baker era I'm always happy to see them bringing back characters from back then.

I can't say I agree with that. I thought he was a really good doctor, myself. I liked the energy, heart and humor he brought to the role. Still, the great thing about Dr. Who is that everyone has their favorite doctors.
Gotta agree that Season 2 looks promising, though. The Christmas Invasion was fun, and I'm dying to see the Cybermen!!
Yeah, everyone who hasn't seen the new Dr. Who yet should definitely try to watch it on Sci-Fi tomorrow. According to the BBC website, whether Season 2 airs in America or not depends on how well Season 1 does, so let's make it a hit!

ready seen the first new series myself, aired here in New Zealand last year, tis really worth the watch! Both the actors did a great job, and i quite like the one episode = new story concept. Must say ive been a Dr Who fan for quite a few years, ever since the first original episode (black and white) aired on Prime tv.
How many seasons are there going to be?

Just finished watcing the first 2 episodes on Sci-Fi Channel. Good to see him back on TV. I'm a big fan of the classic Doctor Who...have all the movies on tape, going all the way back to "An Unearthly Child" November 1963 with William Hartnell.

I grew up watching Doctor Who in the '80s, but I was fortunate enough to see pretty much the entire original series including some of the recovered stories from the first two Doctors.
Haven now seen the Ninth Doctor, I really do like him a lot. I can see a little bit of the crankiness of the First Doctor, the sarcasm of the Sixth Doctor, and the manic energy of the Eighth Doctor in him. I like the approach of the new series in which the Doctor is still the catalyst for most of what happens, but the focus is not always on him.
I'm definitely hooked...

So far Doctor Who (shown Friday nights at 9 pm EDT on Sci-Fi Channel) has been impressive...and now in England the new season of Doctor Who has already started and from what I've heard, the first 2 episodes have been great.
Also a heads up, the Christopher Eccleston Doctor Who season will be available on DVD in the U.S. on July 4, 2006.

I'll be more impressed when they get more scriptwriters in. I'm not a fan of Davies or whatever his name is. Too much overuse of real historic figures.
GracieLizzy
04-23-2006, 01:29 PM
Erm, that's the first time a Davies episode used a real historical figure. The Unquiet Dead was written by Mark Gatiss. Although RTD does come up with small descriptions for each episode which usually mention if he wants a historical figure in the episode and I did hear that Gatiss was intially reluctant to put Dicken's in TUD.
Personally I think Tooth and Claw was RTD's best episode as writer and that it was leaps and bounds better than New Earth. Not as good as Dalek, Father's Day, or The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, but still very good - on par with TUD (which I really enjoyed) if not a smidgin better.

I'm not a fan of the episodes where they concentrate on the companion more than The Doctor. The whole concept of the companion is for them to wander off, get into trouble and have The Doctor use his genius to rescue them...as well as the entire planet ;)

06-19-2006, 09:12 AM
There's not much scope to explore with The Doctor, since Davies decided it would be a good idea to have all the Timelords wiped out as part of The Doctor's backstory. Personally, I think the best Doctor Who story is The Deadly Assasin, set on Galifrey, & reveals the Timelords to be pompous procrastinators, and in doing so explains why The Doctor would rather be anywhere else, the story didn't even require an assistant.
Aratos
06-19-2006, 09:15 AM
And you know why Davies wiped them out? Because he thought it'd only last one series. Bastard. I mean, seriously, what was he thinking?
And yes, there's plenty of scope. There's teh doctors personality, his acitons, etc. Dr Who isn't supposed ot be a deep character-based drama, remember. Besides, we're talking about the most violent pacifist in the universe here.

The Doctor helped life evolve on Earth in City of Death by blowing up some aliens spaceship, & subsequently wiped that life out in Earthshock by crashing another spaceship (filled with cybermen) into the Earth, which allowed Mankind to evolve & was probably the only time Adric was of any use.

So the key word in the statement...DISCUSSION!!!
Doctor Who has been around since 1963...good and bad and in many incarnations. It's not always the best show around and those who glance at a couple of episodes may think it's very stupid however as a whole series, personally I think very highly of it.

I did some research on this Doctor Who, and I still don't like it. You got this time lord guy who randomly travels threw time in a phoneboth, and he can be killed by asprin yet if he gets in a accendent he can just regenerate. I'm sure some people like that kind of story, not me. Tho is sounds intersting to be him.
Aratos
06-20-2006, 05:31 AM
It's slightly more complex than that. The Doctor was banished to earth at one point, apart from anything else.
But more importantly, teh basic premise isn't the important thing. I mean, yes, it's stupid quite frankly. That's the point. But the thing is, the storylines were all so well done, and the acting was, well, yeah. Some of it amazing, some not so good. At the time, shop window dummies wandering around the streets -in the middle of the day no less. Much scarier than at night-, dustbins with plungers attached that shouted "exterminate" in electricy voices and killed people and fo course hte mighty cybermen were actually pretty scary. Not to mention they had this neat trick of each story being in three episodes. You got two cliffhangers that left you waiting for the next episode to see how it'd turn out. Fantastic.

Does it matter? I think what they were trying to say is, there is no satan, and all religeons are false. However, all suggestions of "the beast" were based on that thing, so in thta sense, yes, it really was satan.Or maybe htey were trying to leave it open ended and say "any religeon could be right, and that thing proves it". I dunno. hard to tell.

Well, I looked around in my storage shed outside and found my old Doctor Who tapes. Now my biggest fear was being out in the shed for two years and it does get a tad hot here (up to 115 degrees in the summer.) Popped in a couple of them and they are still in good shape. I may end up tranferring them to DVD very soon since I have a DVD recorder. For now, just to make sure they all work, I'll start from the beginning with "An Unearthly Child", "The Daleks" and "The Edge of Destruction" on the first tape...all from 1963 :)

Good luck. They're yet to release classic Dr. Who in a format that allows you to affordably collect the entire series (i.e. a season by season collection). Still, the full-season Eccleston set is a good start. Can't wait for that to get released here!
I'm a little bummed to hear that Billie Piper is leaving. I know plenty of the people in this thread don't like her, but I thought she was a good counterpart to the doctor. Particularly this season, where their comraderie has really been kicked up a notch. Now they seem like old buddies cruising around the universe and getting into trouble, and I really find that appealing.
And her attempts to get Queen Elizabeth to say "we are not amused" in Tooth and Claw is still a highlight of this season for me.
Mathew
06-23-2006, 04:45 PM
There's Doctor Who: The Beginning Box Set, which collects all the episodes from 1963, well the episodes that weren't deleted (3 discs).
Other than that there's the Key to Time Box set which collects a whole season of Tom Baker (6 discs).
Aratos
06-24-2006, 11:24 AM
And there's a similar John Pertwee set. With Baker and Petwee readily avaialabe, who cares about the others, eh?
Mathew
06-24-2006, 01:00 PM
But really you want a collection that centres on the Daleks, Cybermen, or The Master, rather than "Seasons" that don't really apply to classic Doctor Who.
Aratos
06-24-2006, 01:09 PM
"series", not seasons. And yes, they do count: look
In Robot John Pertwee doctor regenerates into Tom baker. New Doctor then has to sort out the problem with the robot, and then they get into the TARDIS, leave and wind up on The ark in sapce, at the end of which they abandon the TARDIS and travel on some beam or otehr to the earth, in time for The Sontaran Experiment. See? Continuity.
Arcademan
06-24-2006, 04:29 PM
Correct. Despite the concept of traveling back and forth in time, Doctor Who as an entire series does very well keeping in continuity for the most part. Even though the Doctor's arch-nemesis are the selling points, I want the entire known series eventually ;)
Mathew
06-25-2006, 04:00 AM
travel on some beam or otehr to the earth, in time for The Sontaran Experiment. See? Continuity.
I dimly recall both episodes of The Sontaran Experiment, it's only in the following story Genesis of the Daleks, when The Doctor's walking through a field of mist, encounters a Time Lord who then sends him on an errand to kill the Daleks before they can become a galactic threat, and after six episodes he's back on the space station in time to deal with some Cybermen. And on to Scotland to encounter the Loch Ness Monster...
And where does Shada fit into the continuity???
Maybe it's just my memory of the series under John Nathan Turner that has clouded my judgement.
Aratos
07-03-2006, 07:23 AM
I have the scripts from that series a-sitting here. It's perfectly continuous.
However, sticking laternative-dimension cyberment with no cyberman-guns, bringing back the daleks despite having obliterated them in a previous episode and sticking them both together is unforgiveable. As is that torchwood nonsense. For one hting, why did htey allow the doctor to cooperate with UNIT if they think all alien technology belongs to them so they can rebuild hte British empire? Which, by the way, sounds like Davies making a political statement. Boo.

I have almost all of the classic Doctor Who (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_%28Doctor_Who%29) on badly copied VHS, (I'm only missing the one Hartnell episode that was unearthed recently) I find that I can watch any of the stories with Sarah Jane Smith as companion in any order between Terror of the Zygons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terror_of_the_Zygons) & The Hand of Fear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hand_of_Fear).
And Russel T. Davies idea of bringing the Cybermen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybermen) & Daleks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daleks) together is rather poor, as is his memory that they have never appeared in the same episode together, seems to rule out The Five Doctor's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Doctors)anniversary special (which premiered in America 2 days before broadcast in the UK). He really should have kept that little gem until the 45th anniversary of the show. So what great villain from The Doctor's pantheon will he re-imagine for next year's show? The Sea Devils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sea_Devils)? The Ice Warriors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ice_Warriors)?? The Time Meddler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Time_Meddler)???

The second series just started in the states and so far its been okay. I didn't like that the Doctor got so self-rightous with Harriet Jones in the Chirstmas special when she destroyed the alien ship. The Doctor was mad that they were retreating but the Sycorax leader gave an oath to leave but as soon the Doctor turns his back, the leader luges at him. The other Sycorax wouldn't have just left Earth alone either. Was Torchwood ever mentioned in the first series? What did everybody think about the Daleks in New York? I thought it was okay but I think Dalek Sec developed humanity way too quickly.
