Is there any hope of Tokyopop bringing over Ono Fuyumi's 12 Kingdoms series of novels? There was a good anime that was based on them that came over a few years ago that another company licensed, but that company doesn't publish novels to my knowledge. I would think that given the huge market in YA fantasy literature, it would be a big hit.

*LOL* You totally beat me to it! I saw the Ask the Editors thread and I was just about to post this topic.

Please, please please bring out the Juni Kokki (十二国記) Novels, TP!!! Now that bringing out Japanese Novels has become more mainstream, this is an absolute no-brainer. These are great novels, and the anime already has a dedicated following, albeit maybe not one as big as, say, FMA. Still, where I work at Borders Express many people I talk to about this series admit to having seen and loved it.

The better our current novels sell, the more likely you'll see other series later. I can tell you that many U.S. companies have been interested in trying to get this series, and we are not excluded from that list. But we really really wanted to get Fullmetal Alchemist too, and that didn't happen, so who knows? ^_^ But I would suggest showing your support for our bigger novels like the upcoming Scrapped Princess and Kino no Tabi as well as the manga novels like Slayers and .hack.

Whee! It'd be SO wonderful to get the novels to the States! I've been watching news from several publishers in the hopes that they'd perhaps mention trying to get the rights to translate and publish it here... I've done "research" in the past on the novels, there was a rumor (that was just that of course) that Del Rey or some other company was gonna get it, but of course, it never panned out. I've even read some small snippets of fan translated summaries of the novels and such. I also THINK last I heard the series wasn't even finished yet... but I admit that it was a few years ago when I last really started getting into this series and doing all that hunting... perhaps I'll start looking again for more info on the series!

That's awesome. Now there's an anime I want to know more about. It just ended in tha wierd place. What happened to that unicorn!??

Hmm. Scrapped princess was a novel? I'll definatley be buying that.

Yeah, apparently a novel first. I'm not really interested in the anime or manga, but hearing it was a novel first, I may check out that. Some of the other novels coming out looked cool too, especially the Sekai novels and Kino's Journey novels. I plan on renting out both the anime of these series, so it will be interesting to compare.

I don't plan on buying Slayers* or .Hack, though, because I don't like either of these series. Moreover, I'm not really interested in the novels if they're based on a manga or anime, unless it's a manga/anime that I *really* like. I'm really only interested in the novels if they're source material.

(*okay, I goofed. Slayers was a novel first, which I know. But I'm still not super-interested in it as a series.)

The same thing goes for manga, actually. If it goes anime-->manga I'm only interested if I'm a big fan of the anime (for instance, if someone licensed the shoujo Escaflowne manga...not the shounen one, the shoujo one...). However, if it goes manga-->anime, I will usually buy the anime as well as the manga (in the same way that people will often watch the movie based on the book but not read the book based on the movie.)

So, just to restate what's been in the press lately for those fans here that are interested, yes, we're doing 12 Kingdoms. The wait will be long--we're taking extra care to do these books right--but yes, they are coming to the states, as part of TOKYOPOP's Pop Fiction line. Rejoice! ^_^

This news makes me really happy! There are quite a few fans of this series who have been patiently waiting for the novels to be published in English. We're all counting on you to do the novels justice with your translation, so don't let us down!

I hope you'll give us updates from time to time just to let us know how things are coming along and give us an opportunity to ask some questions. Thanks for your time!

From what I hear, Youko isn't the main character in the books, or at least not the star of each story. In how many books is she the main character?
I'm assuming there's also a book or two mainly revolving around Taiki. His story is the most interesting in the anime. I haven't seen all of it yet though, but the story involving Youko, Shoukei, and Suzu is interesting too.....It's gonna be a looooong wait :(

There are three books centered around Youko; one is about her first coming to Japan and becoming the queen of Kei, the second is about her and the two other girls, and the third is Risai (the girl who works with unicorns) requesting Youko's help in finding Taiki in Japan.

There are two books about Taiki, not including the one where Youko searches for him; one is about Taiki in the modern-day, one is about his first becoming a unicorn.

There is one novel about En and one novel about Kyou (the country that Sonshou gets exiled to) in addition.

I know you guys are changing the cover art for most of the books...is that true with 12 Kingdoms as well? If so, will you think about having a colored sheet on the inside w/ the original cover art, or, if the novels do well, an artbook that includes the cover-art? These books have gorgeous illustrations, so I'd hate to lose them entirely...

Too early to even really talk about any specifics of this title, my friend. I'm telling you this so you don't think I'm ignoring you. All will be revealed closer to the release date.

But the release date is almost a year away! So mean :( :( :( I'll have to hunt these down so I can preorder them when the time comes. I love this series. It will be nice to be able to read the ending of the anime series. Who knows maybe if these do well in the states they'll finish animated it.

Only in your dreams, Kara. Only in your dreams. :-)

Well, I figured I wouldn't get any specifics on the cover art. But I thought that maybe if the editors heard that, um, 'dem crazy fans wanted the cover art, they might have "decided all along" to include the original cover art. ;-)

Of we'd love to make fans happy, and fans are always forthright with what they want, so no one here is confused or unsure. Unfortunately, numbers make the decisions. So it's still way too early to talk about 12 Kingdoms. Stay tuned!

Does anyone know whether the new novels coming out are based off the anime or the original novel?

The anime is based on the novels.

guruboy

Yes, but I was under the impression that the anime did not cover everything in the novels.

PeterAhlstrom

The novels coming out from TOKYOPOP are translations of the original Japanese novels that the anime is based on. They are not novelizations of the anime. And you're right, the anime does not cover everything in the novels.

Use amazon.co.jp with the keyword 十二国記

Or, the author's name is 小野 不由美

Good luck.

Wow, you guys like taking risks!

I loved the anime, so I definently will be getting these, but this is not a mainstream story-has Tweleve Kingdoms had any television time in this country? I don't recall seeing it anywhere.

I just hope you guys can get it finished and not wind up with another problem like you had with Slayers.

I ordered mine through www.rightstuf.com to use up a gift certificate I got for Christmas. I ordered on the day it released and it went immediately to backorder!

Still waiting though they did send me a free DVD for my troubles.

I am guessing that the launch went well?

PeterAhlstrom

It has gone well, but I'm surprised about the backorder thing. There are plenty in inventory at our distributor. Maybe RightStuf needs to order more in?

I read the reviews on the anime and after reading the some Seikai Novels, I thinking about check this novel out as well, I really like plot of the story. Also like the art work of the cover, which is another reason why want to check out the book.

I bought my from overstock.com, there its like 11 dollars. And I just checked again, and they have 12 Kingdoms Book 2 already available for pre-order. Which I will do whe I find something else to to buy from there.

The 19.99 price is probably just because of different vendors trying to sell it for their price. Or as someone else said, blook sucking vampires!

Edit: oh yea, Overstock always have some random date of release, of course it's not really trustworthy but ... that doesn't really matter.
