What do you guys think the best anime magazines are? They are all expensive, so I only want to subscribe to the best! Please let me know what you think! :o

Megami. Hands down. (Of course, its also fanservice filled, pure Japanese goodness. So you may want to go with one of the cheaper, localized mags like Newtype.)

I'm assuming English-language mags? Then, I agree with the above, Newtype's the best one out there now.

Everyone's saying Newtype? I don't know - it's never really critical of anything it features, it's like a whole magazine of adverts. Pretty adverts, though.

I'd much prefer to read online anime magazines, because at least they're critical. (...and I don't have to pay. :D)

I really like Shonen Jump, and I buy it every month, but in reality, the best American-published Anime Magazine would have to be Newtype. I mean, how can you go wrong with tons of information and included centerfolds, manga previews and preview DVDs? :)

I've been a subscriber of Shonen Jump for about two years now, but it's okay at best. The size of the magazine has steadily decreased, and there's not as much material in it as there used to be. Newtype is a great magazine, it's just a really, really, really expensive one. Anime Insider is good, too. I'm really fond of it.
All and all, it just depends on what you want and how much money you want to spend.

Newtype is one of the ones I go with, it is expensive yes, but you do get pretty snazzy postcards/poster and anime previews from time to time. It is filled with many an advertisment, but as said they are pretty ;)

Of the currently published Mags, Newtype is, without fail, the best if you're going for top-of-the-line, straight-from-Japan news. Anime Insider is better if you're more of a "well, I want it, but I want it in English" fan. Personally, I can't stand the cheesy writing in Insider, but it gets you updates on the anime/manga world. (I write articles for mags and newspapers; good writing isn't that hard to come by, if you actually try.)

Before it cancelled, and switched to Shojo Beat (the name can gag me; the comics are actually pretty good), Animerica was the best I could find. They had good writing, opinions that weren't sordid and straight-from-the-makers, and good updates on what you could find in the states.

But I'd recommend Newtype-USA above all the rest. Of comic mags, Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat are the way to go, unless you want raw, Japanese. In that case, the Japanese Shounen Jump, Asuka, Hana to Yume, etc., are all good finds. ^_^ (I prefer Asuka for the darker tone, but Hana to Yume has some pretty damn good publications, too.)

Well, being A Scot living in Scotland there is only one Uk based mag that I know about and that's Neo. It's pretty good, it's not just anime/manga, it also goes into Japanese culture a little. I can't be bothere running down to FP every month to buy imports so I just get Neo.

Ofcourse, I doubt this information is of any use to Americans, dunno if they import UK mags over there.

Haha, it's distributed by ADV, so of course it's going to be filled with ads! But they do have a lot of information on titles you wouldn't see in other anime magazines.

But you're absolutely right. Online is the best place to find critical, unbiased reviews. Oh, ANN.com, how I love thee!

As for actual 'magazines', I used to think Animerica was best for the United States people. Then it was cancelled. ;_; I was one of those that had a subscription for it too.

I do like Shojo Beat, though.

I like anime insider, it's cheaper then NewType and it's still good. I've only bought three issues of Newtype ever, I used to like it when they had the Japanese TV listings because that was interesting. Newtype really costs too much though.

The best anime magazine? Newtype USA by far. The other mags like Anime Insider and Animerica are cheaper, but they're not interesting.

If you think Newtype is pricey, then wait for the quarterly released Animerica for free at Best Buy. And for those who do not know. The Animerica quarterly at Best Buy are pretty small :).

I really hope somebody makes Animage available in the US. Then Newtype will have some serious competition.

I read Newtype, Anime Insider, Shonen Jump, and Shojo Beat. (i read Animerica too before it was cancelled.)
I would have to say that Newtype is the best one out. They have pretty good previews and stuff. They have reviews for anime and manga and you get the preview dvd every month the only downside really is its price but you get the most from them. Anime Insider is cool just for news since they don't have reviews and stuff but they do good interviews. and a new English VA gets interviewed every month. Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat are both cool for manga although Shonen Jump has decreased in pages by a lot which is lame. and then the internet is great too y'know.

That's Newtype, and I would also recommend it as a good Anime mag, though I would not recommend paying the stand price if you can manage to subscribe. And some of the subscription cards have a special deal where you get a cute little cosplay hat with your subscription.

I read the anime insider magazine and I think that one is the best one. Newtype USA is good too, but it is really expensive. It costs $80 to subscribe.

Well, there's 3 magazines that I'd like to recommend.

The first one is Newtype that - although expensive - really is the BEST anime magazine out there today.

The second one is Anime Insider. I subscribe to it. It's a great magazine, but not as great as Newtype. I wish they gave out free DVD's with their magazines. >_<

The third one is Previews magazine. I'm pretty sure people don't know about it but dammit it's huge, and cheap! @_@ Awesomeness.

Speaking of mags, I just got the newest issue of Anime Insider!

Whatever happened to Animerica?
