View Full Version : Cosplay: Is There An Age Limit?

Do you think there's an age when you should just stop cosplaying?

My personal opinion is there is no age limit. Altho I do think the characters you choose to cosplay should change with age.
Example: If your 50 you might wanna rethink that Sailor Moon fuku.
Example: If your 10 you might wanna rethink that Etna cosplay.
But again, that's just my opinion, lets hear yours..

Hahahahah. I've seen a 50+ year old woman in sailor fuku. It made me no longer lust after Mercury. Damn her. :D

Also, it's Chibi-Usa, not Dai-Usa. Thank you.

all i have to say if you look good and dont make the character your playing look bad go for it. i mean someone that is like has wrinkles around there face they could go as an older anime character. but plastic surgery dose wonders, ya now, well except for some people.

lol, I'd hope so xD 50 year olds in Sailor fuku's=freaky xD But I think there should be a minimum too lol, like, a 10 year old dressed as some anime slut would be awkward @.@ But yeah, age should really be considered. Who would be appropriate for a 50 y.o to cosplay anyway?

@Odin --> *cough* Michael Jackson *cough*

Miako

Well... there are lots of older anime characters. I saw an awesome older lady as Kaede once. :p But for guys? I dunno... probably even more than for girls?

I agree on the 10 yr old note as well, if you are very young you shouldn't be dressing as a super revealing character.

If you get plastic surgery so you can cosplay longer, something is wrong with you.

If you cosplay as older characters it should not be a problem
there is no limit
you just need to cosplay as something that looks like it's in your age limit

Jacku
04-06-2006, 03:25 PM
I don't think it matters. It just depends on the character. If you're going to cosplay as a slut then let's hope you're of legal age.

I'll being doing cos-play till I'm 100! but yeah, who'd want to see wrinkly Mithra (FF)?

for guys . . . well, you have all those old perverts, like, master roushi? (how do you spell his name again? so bad with names . . . <;-;> ) but yeah, you also have guys like Jet from Cowboy Bebop that are older. There are plenty of them out there, just have to search for them.
and yeah, I really think that you should consider to cosplay someone closest to your own age, it just makes it seem more realistic. just like how I would love to be able to dress up as Kagura from Fruits Basket for the con this year (but who knows if I'll be able to <-->, )
But yeah, there is no age limit I don't think.

People dressing up out of age is something I really find amusing-- like 70 year-old Paine, or Old Lady Inuyasha.

Admittedly, it is creepy to see the elderly in drastically younger roles, but dammit-- we'll be there at some point, and we won't like some snot-nosed whippersnapper telling us what to dress as.

Yeah i agree 10 year olds shouldnt go as something really revealing. and Yeah 50+ year olds in Sailormoon fuku definitely not cool haha. As long as your costume looks good on you and its a good choice for your age go for it y'know.

They won't have to tell me how to dress, because I'm not going to embarrass myself or be laughed at by wearing something that is obviously beyond inappropriate. :p I probably won't cosplay anymore by then anyhow, I'll just talk my kids or grandkids into loving cosplay and fuss over what character they should do.

only on halloween or conventions do i wear cosplay
me and my friends went out as the whole cast of naruto for halloween (i think we scared little kids)
and it would be sorta creepy to see older people in cosplay
i mean can you imagine a 60 year old Sailor moon *shiver*

There is no age limit in cosplaying as far as masquarades and skits goes. As long as the person cosplaying enjoys it, thats none of my buisness. However, if you are a really big celebrity like Micheal Jackson, you might want to think about it. There was some older people (about late 20s) doing a One Piece cosplay I went to and they did pretty good. And I have seen a pic of Greg Ayrnes cosplaying as Chrono and he's about 30ish something. O_O

Miako

Hee I couldn't consider 30 something old.

I've seen older people cosplaying (they sure are interesting). If you look good and enjoy cosplaying, great, enjoy. But I think in general, you should cosplay that's appropriate for you age group (there is a time when the school girl uniform has to go away, unless you really look that young or good in it...) But I think there really is no age limit.

Little kids can be cute. I saw many kids at Sakura-Con this year; many were very cute. I definitely think they should have age appropriate costumes.

The poblem is, "age limit" suggests that there is something immature about cos-play, and so you should grow out of it by the itime you reach a certain age. Personally the older you get the more likely you'd be able to spend more money on outfits etc. As long as the peerson is enjoying what they are doing and doesn't go around on public transport outside of Halloween (hey it's potentially embarassing) then anyone should be able to cosplay.

Hmmm, well, Obsidian. I explain what I meant by Age Limit in my first post if you read that at all???

By age limit I meant do you think there is a certain age when you should cover up a bit more. Not a certain age when you should STOP all together. So if it wasn't explanatory enough what I meant was "Is there an age limit where you should STOP cosplaying certain things?" Better? Kay. I think everyone else pretty much got that tho. I apologize for not being clearer. ^^

I think that just for decencys sake that people should cosplay responsibly, If you're gonna cosplay, dont wear things that you wouldnt normally deem appropriate to wear, and for the love of all that is good in this world, do not use cosplay as an excuse to dress inapropriatley, Just because you dress as a 18 year old girl, does not magically transform you into that 18 year old girl, and the greater the age difference, outside of five years, the greater the mental trauma inflicted on all those around.

definatly there should be an age when you no longer wear Sailor Moon outfits. But the age depends on how you look for your age. Some of those actors on shows like 7th Heaven and One Tree Hill are 20 something but still make good teens so......it depends. But PLEASE do not get plastic sugery to cosplay. i for one would be creeped out.

I saw a cute grandma dressed as Sophie from Howl :) I thought it was so cute. She was with her grandchildren (real little ones) at a con. Wish I had a grandma like that!

ya umm it seems like a good idea like if you're sixty and still cosplaying i can respect that but if you're wearing something skimpy then i'll probably be scared for life and if you're a two yr old then you probably shouldn't be cosplayin' some big breasted babe just an opinion tho

okay last halloween some guy (his beer belly, and all) showed up at my house dressed as sailor moon. i swear i opened the door, took one look and closed the door again, then fell down crying i didn't need to see that, and wishing that my eyes were gouged out if the image wasn't imprinted in my head. *ahhh**shudder* eww

^^ I love you! I think the best advice is when you are between 18-25 cosplay really slutty and in short stuff if you have the body for it... :D But err.. watch out for stalkers. Cons do come with stalkers... people who follow you around all night are CREEPY. Bring mace. :p What? I didn't say that...

Obsidian_Faerie

cosplay also comes with yaoi. I remember a dude with a sign at a con, will yaoi for money lol

Or bring along a really big intimidating friend, like Miako at AN 07, tends to scare away all but the most forward of stalkers, and then if they still follow you around, violence will ensue.

I think it depends on how your body looks like. I'd bother more about overweigh people cospllaing e.g. sailor Moon or Envy from FMA. I mean my mom is Ukhm a, bit over 50 and she'd lok great in sailor fuku, whatever you say XD. On the other hand you see that 16 year old girl with her costume revealing that quantities of fat >< *shudders*

Just cosplay as something that is around your age? Something that would make someone else say "Wow! That looks like an actual real life version of _________!!" I also think that you should also be careful about the gender of someone you cosplay as. If a guy wants to cosplay as...well..uhh..(Most manga artists draw female characters with little coverage)..some female character with a lot of coverage, then that's okay. But if a guy were to dress up as Ren(DearS), then that would be a tad disturbing. That was a little off topic, but I just wanted to type it up anyways.

Okay, I'll play the target here. I'm over 50. No Sakura or Sailor Moon for me. You'll see me volunteering at the registration desks at cons. I write. A lot. However, I would also like to participate in cosplay. I just don't know which character would be appropriate to a petite lady my age. To make it worse, I have a buzz cut on my grey hair, because after chemo, it simply never grew back right. There's a challenge for you. Who can I cosplay? This is a serious request, because I have been unable to come up with one on my own.

Well, any character that is not too naked ^^ Anyway you probably will have to have a wig... (I'd have to have too if I wanted to cosplay short-haired character...)
Hey, 50's not bad :)

like i shouldn't play jet black from cowboy bebop, maybe not even spike, but maybe i could play kuwabara, or someone from yu yu hakusho.

i remember last year i was on the bus and someone was dressed as spike from cowboy bebop, the frightning thing was he really looked like spike, it was perfect. of course i had forgotten about anime north until i asked him where he was headed, i was dumbfounded, i couldn't help myself from praising his outfit.

06-16-2006, 04:10 PM
Haha. Anime North...XD I was there. I think(and two of my cosplaying friends agree with me) that the two things that can ruin cosplays the most is fat and noticible acne. Not like minor pimples around the nose or neck, I'm talking major acne here. Or whatever you wanna call it, I don't get acne much so I don't know much about it. ^^;

I agree that age / size /gender are aLL valid points as to what costume to use, as is cost and ablilty to make the costume.

But as to an abolute upper age for cosplay it all depends on the person, please remember that there are LOTS of non Anime CosPlayers (they just dont call them selfs that) e.g. Civil War Re-inactors, Cowboy Actoion Shooters (VERY Expensive props ;), Ball Room Dance.

I my self only just got into Cos and only ligthly at that but it is a blast to be a character that I like and to be recognized as that person not as my self a few days of the year.

Just in case you are wondering I was 39 the first time I went to a con in Costume (I am now 40) Went as Jet Black (tan suit & Fedora ep. Honky tonk woman & Brain Scratch) to A-kon and Ushi-Con GO! very minialist costume but I had fun.

Please Rember it is to have fun, NOT to scare off people I.E. the infamuous "Man faye" but that is a diffrent story

YamPuff
07-15-2006, 01:41 PM
I think the person should consider his age, height weight etc. If they're having fun, go for it, but they should have some thought into it, or they're just making fools of themselves.

Like...if a 300 pound 30 year old women dresses as Chi from Chobits...><

I think the point of coslaying (in an artistic point of view) is trying to capture the character as closely as possible. If I were to dress up as a Sailor, I wouldn't my favorite, Sailor Saturn. but Sailor Jupiter cuz I look more like her. t makes more sense to do it that way. Just me humble onion.

ZeKarmiSama
07-15-2006, 02:15 PM
I think it depends on your body more than your age...

Because I don't really care what age you are if you're fat (like incredibly fat) and trying to cosplay Tifa... it's disturbing!!

Then at Anime Expo there was the cutest little kid as a heartless... squeee!

Then I saw someone's parent dressed as Luxord. I don't think a young person can pull off a Luxord cosplay since luxord happens to have facial hair.

Though bishonen make life easier. I really resent dressing as female characters because most of them are skimpy and I'm a totally prude about my body (and have nothing in terms of endowment on my chest). Though after getting really hot in the weather, I think I might have to start liking characters who show skin in places besides their hands and face XD And there's not enough cool people with glasses in anime and I hate using contacts because I love my green glasses...

YamPuff
07-15-2006, 02:46 PM
That's true, I was referring more to people who looked their age. If you're eighty and still look like a thirteen-year-old, go for it.

But yeah, fat people as Tifa...><

I’m into video games, and anime, obviously. Star Wars, original trilogy ONLY. Not those evil ****ing prequels or special editions. God, I hate what Star Wars has become, and the sycophantic fanboys still nursing diligently at Lucas’ teat even though the milk has long gone sour. He’s more CG than man now.
I NOW LOVE YOU MAN-FAYE!!! Very interesting interview...
So you’re going to be sporting the infamous shorts until you win?

Absolutely. And probably for a few years after, at least until the dust settles.
Ah, but will he wash them in the mean-time. ;)

I think it really depends who the child is cosplaying as. For example, I've seen eight year olds dress up as Sailor Moon for Halloween, so what's the difference if they dress up as Sailor Moon, or Yu-Gi-Oh! or Ash Ketchum at an anime con, accompanied by a parent of course.
