View Full Version : Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter

Yeah, I read smutty vampire novels. But Anita is a good guilty passion.
Anita Blake. Necromancer. Vampire Slayer. The Executioner to the Undead, just plain creepy to the living.
Jean-Claude. Sexy. Suave. French. He runs a strip club for his Master, or should I say Mistress?
Nikolaus. She may be cute. But she's the centuries old Master of the City of St. Louis. And she doesn't like Anita being around... (Vampire loli? OH HELL YEAH.)
Throw in some more vamps, some wit, and a schoolteacher by day/werewolf by night named Richard and you have the makings of a fun fun time. Will Anita be tempted? Oh yeah. Will she fall down? Yep. Will she come up with guns blazing? Heck yeah.
And don't even get me started about Edward. :P

I've been enjoying reading that, too. Someone mentioned in another thread that it would make a good manga, and I would have to agree.
I also like the elf stories, but that would have to be in the adult section.

I "bookcrossed" the first Merry book at a family mexican place a while back. I pity whoever picked it up. I can stomach Anita, but Merry is just... bad. :P
If she wants to write about some other characters, I wish she'd write more about Edward. :P Edward... he's my sort of psycho. :D

If she wants to write about some other characters, I wish she'd write more about Edward. :P Edward... he's my sort of psycho. :D
The Edward book, Obsidian Butterfly I think, that's the only one I could get this guy I know to read. He likes those psycho types as well.
I liked these up until recently. Now they just seem to meander. She starts off with a killing she is going to investigate, then for most of the book it's just, well if you read them you know. Anyway, I did really like them up until 6 or so. I am also a Richard hater. He bugs me. I would definitely recommend these though.
Also, Sunglasses after Dark (Sonja Blue Series) is a good vampire series. That one is about a Vampire vampire hunter (no that is not a typo, she is a vampire who happens to hate vampires). Nancy Collins, the writer stopped after 3 though, I think.
And as long as I am listing good vampire series, Sookie Stackhouse is also a very good series. Dead until Dark is her first. Sookie is a poor waitress who also can read minds. In this world Vampires came out when synthetic blood was developed. It's a funny and sexy vampire series.

Haven't read that one, I'll put it on my list. I have too many things on my list. There's a new Sookie coming out, called Definitely Dead.

The first book in the Undead Series is Undead and Unwed. They're from Betsy's POV.

Ok, it's on my list. Also, it's been a while since I read these, but PN Elrod's series of vampire books, the Vampire Files, are also pretty good. And Poppy Z Brite's Lost Souls is another good one.

Anita is what is great about it. She's a good heroine with conflicting values and a neat worldview.
I admit she turns into megaslut in the later books, but as her world crumbles and rebuilds around her, you get to see her grow and adapt and everything sort of makes sense. Well, if bedding vampires, wereleopards and werewolves ever makes sense.
I love the phrase "big puppy piles" too. God help me.

Richard is the king of emo. I can't stand him, but... I sort of find him humorously normal and a good counterpoint for all the freaks.

I think she turned into the megaslut as the writer was devorcing her husband. But I do really like the series as well, Except when the writer goes into detail about the clothes she wears. Dear gods all I can imagine are these horrible outfits, and I get distracted and go who would wear that in the first place? But thats just me, though everyone else except for richard dresses alright. Maybe it's sad I notice these things.......
But Kyaa the Catlord has it right once again!

Yeah, it was sort of linear. There is really only one or two people I could recommend the books to, and I just told them, "just read until you can't take it, then just stop". Because really, she just gets progressively more graphic with each book (violence, sex and violent sex).
Anyone read "Micah"? I just kind of get the feeling that that one is just a sex book. More like the dirtiest of the romance novels.

It's awesome!! I can't explain why, but you just have to read a really good one. Who is that one by Holly Short?
Which one? I will list these in an order that makes a little more sense, I hope
Sonja Blue Series by Nancy Collins -- The main character is a very mad female vampire. To become a vampire in those books, you have to uhhh, well you'll find out, and the main character is very pissed about it.
Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite -- I recommend this if you like BL especially. I'm not into BL, but it was good anyway. It's about teen vampires, and they are bad and wicked.
Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris -- Sookie is very funny, and the things she "hears" other people say, just hilarious. Plus Eric, totally hot viking(he is actually from the viking era) vampire. Gotta read it.
The Vampire Files series by PN Elrod -- it's been a long time since I read these, and I think they only came out in paperback, but they are pretty darned good from what I recall.
And if you are asking about Obsidian Butterfly, that is Anita Blake, but a really Edward centric Anita Blake. Yes Guilty Pleasures was good for Edward too.

I tried, he gave up.
Well, I can't stand him enough to even think logically about him, Richard I mean. But Jean Claude...he makes my stomach tickle, (giggles like a school girl) :o

Either that, or she is just way too into clothing. Perhaps she was a pauper as a child, and only had a potato sack to wear.
I didn't mind Anita becoming slutty, I minded all the, Oh, but I can't do that, I'm such a good girl stuff. And every time she was about to do something really slutty, she had to have this big inner philosophical argument about it. It really did her no good, she still did the slutty thing.

I liked the turmoil. Yes, it did her no good. But it made her feel more.... human.
Of course, she's not quite human, is she?
And I love Sookie Stackhouse. I just can never remember who she is. Those books come out too slow. :D

Man, you are such a glutton for punishment.
Sookie comes out way too slow. But Harris has written that way for her other series as well.
Which reminds me of another series I read, where the author is just taking way too long. The Sam Jones Novels, they call them Tart Noir, they are mysteries, with spice! The first one is Black Rubber Dress. Sam Jones is an English artist who makes these huge crazy sculptures, and she is in the wrong place at the wrong time. She's also not a very good girl. ;)

I'm actually glad you told me those were like Gossip Girls. I showed them to someone who had run out of Gossip Girls to read. She said they looked good to her, but I now feel like I did the right thing. I think I will try one, trashy stuff makes for good fluffy reading. In fact, the girl who was reading Gossip Girls said the same thing, that they were trashy. I wonder if anyone has any respect for these things, or if everyone thinks they are trashy, but they read them anyway...hmmmm...Trashy goodness...

For anyone who wants to know, the first volume of Anita Blake (Guilty Pleasures i think) is being adapted into a 12 issue mini series by Marvel comics. I think its on its 2nd issue as of this month (December).
The art is by the always amazing Brett Booth:

Can we all say ROMANCE NOVELS and just be done with it. If you like vampire hunting novels try John Steakley's "Vampire$". Yes, I know that John Carpenter tried to make a movie based on the novel, and yes I know the movie was a horrible piece of drek, but the novel actually rates in my top 10. Just to throw my two-cents in here, this series has turned into trash. The first several were fun, bubble-gum reads but fun none the less. Now they are nothing more then a porno with a reputable publishing company. Anyone looking into this series skip it, it will just tick you off.
