Director? Hard to say. So many differnt ones made so many differnt good anime movies. Hayao Miyazaki as made many good movies. He's the only one who comes to mind.

Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata (well I've only seen Grave of the Fireflies but it was really good), and Kunihiko Ikuhara (okay so I've only seen Sailormoon of his too but I did really like R, and S... and SuperS wasn't that bad, it was cute!).

I personally like Hayao Miyazaki the best, as he's made great films and has also worked on a few series like Lupin the 3rd.

Koji Morimoto. One of the lead creators of studio 4C. He directed a short called Beyond (it was in the animatrix). His first major role as an animation director was in Akira. He was in his mid twenties when he did that though. There are many many other animated features that he is a director for but I can't list them/don't want to. All in all I think he is the best artist/director. I love his style of direction and the angles he chooses.

Miyazaki did the script for a Lupin movie (something with a tower).

I have a few. Satoshi Kon: I just watched Perfect Blue again last night, and it made a lot more sense to me than the first time I saw it. Between that, Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress and his Paranoia Agent series, I think he has a perfect record.
Makoto Shinkai: Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are beautifully animated and also make me cry with their stories.
Shinichiro Watanabe: Cowboy Bebop is the epitome of cool.
I also like the directing styles of Akitaroh Daichi and Kunihiko Ikuhara. I really can't narrow it down to one.

Miyazaki - his attention to getting the results that he wants to get is amazing. If you watched the behind-the-scenes/making-of of Spirited Away, and you see how he crossed a dog and a lizard and a kite to get the dragon, you'll know what I mean. You see the end result first -- a homogeneous creature, but when they show you the different aspects, you see that, too.

For "cinematography", Katsuhiro Ôtomo -- the sheer scale of movies like Akira and Steamboy is like nothing I've ever seen in live action movies.

You would have to be one of the first to come "out of the closet", so to speak, for steamboy. Everyone else hated it ^___^ hohoho utini!

Satoshi Kon is one of my favourites. Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, and Paranoia Agent rocks!:D I can't wait to see what he'll come up with next. I like Hayao Miyazaki too. It was his movie Totoro that introduced me to the whole anime genre.

Is everyone "bowing" to miyazaki because he is the only director that has been widely acclaimed? I'll remind you that in japan he doesn't have the best animated movies, and sometimes he doesn't have the best stories. I think that in america many, many good ideas are overlooked in anime because a new miyazaki film is released.

Satoshi Kon. I haven't been bored with any of his works and he has a great sense of cinematography. Perfect Blue is probably his best work.

I think the reason why Miyazaki is so popular in North America is because his stories tend to appeal to younger audiences like My Neighbour Totoro, The Cat Returns, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, ect. Animation isn't as popular with adults in the U.S as it is in Japan, so of course Miyazaki is going to be more popular over in North America then lets say Hideki Takayama because the demand for family oriented animation is greater.

I can't really name one, but I can name three: Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo); Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent); and Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou). These guys just seem to know how to make the anime that entertain me.

Hayao Miyazaki, some of his films were some of my first animes that I saw, even though it was in Chinese and my mom fell asleep in the midst of translating it to me.

Yes, Hayao Miyasaki! I love the progression of his art, going from the simple art of Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind to the newer, Howl's Moving Castle. Although, sometimes the bland characters can irritate me, they get better and better each time, and the magnificent backgrounds contraction with the characters is beautiful!

Miyazaki is like universally renouned, but I like Rintaro better ^_^ He directed Metropolis and X the movie which was one hell of a beautiful nonsensical visual feast.

Also loved Ikuhara for Utena & sailormoon, who worked with Sato-san on SM who worked on Princess tutu. Much shoujo love from me.

Akitaro Daichi.

Fruiits Basket, Kodomo no Omacha, Tsukikage Ran. He's all over the place, but no matter what he's doing, he does it well.

His fight scenes, in Tsukikage Ran and the Jubei-chan shows, are imho better than Watanabe's. Besides, girls with swords > boys with guns. :P

Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Goro Miyazaki looks like he is going to follow in his father's (Hayao Miyazaki) footsteps if Gedo Senki/Tales From Earthsea gets goods reviews.
