Wondering that myself. I like rock, but only when it's in english so then I can sing along. Plus I like it when it actually rocks, not that light j-rock stuff.
Do you people only listen to it because it's Japanese or from Asia or what?

Not because it's Japanese or comes from Asian culture; just because it's GOOD. Simple. And if it's in another language, I'll go out of my way to find lyrics so that I can sing along to it.
I listen to anything my ears can handle. Foreign or not, if it's good, I'll most likely add it to my iPod. Same with if it's just instrumental or if there are lyrics to it or even if its a ccapella. LOL.
I'm all about being eclectic with my music. :D

Good? That's all opinion.
What I'm saying is it bothers me that fans of anime will listen to music that has "J" in front of it because it has it. Like if Gazette wasn't classified as "J-rock" half the people in America that currently listen to it probibly wouldn't listen to it. They only listen to it because it's from Japan.
Why even have that "J" in front of it? I mean, Greman rock isn't called G-rock, Swedish rock isn't called S-rock, so what makes Japan so special that it has to have "J" in front of it?

My listening habits are incredibly diverse. I listen to music in English Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi and French. I just really like language. I speak both English and French and I'm trying to improve on Japanese so I do understand more of it. But I don't think you have to understand the lyrics neccesarily to appreciate any given song. Music is an international language as far as I'm concerned. Infact, there are a lot of artist from other countries that have had big English hits in America and vice versa.

i still listen to my own country's music, and some Japanese. i mostly listen to Rap, or R&B. like D4L, 50 cent, and Snoop dog are some of my favorites. i have been known to listen to some oldies from the 50's to early 70's.

Oh, so it's not a matter of personal taste after all? As long as it has a J in front of it, eh.

Note that China and Korea have letters in front of their rock and pop to distinguish it from other countries music as well. It's not exclusive to Japan, though it is uncommon outside of Asia. Which, by the way, a lot of Japanese music-related sites have separate pages from foreign music for what they themselves call "Jpop". Yahoo Japan has separate categories for rock (meaning American and other countries rock) and Japanese rock. It's not a term used purely by non-Japanese.

Songs/artists I like:
Miscellaneous BBoy mixes, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Immortal Technique, Michael Buble, Andre Bocelli (sometimes), No Such Thing by John Mayer, KISS, some X Japan stuff, Smile Again by KCM, only once in a while MC Mong, Flametal (awesome Flamenco/Metal band), Frank Sinatra, Black Eyed Peas, BB King, Chrono Trigger music and remixes, a few select Elton John songs, Queen, KISS (for a while but then I got sick of them), Jay-Z, Papoose, John Legend (awesome man), FF VII: AC songs, Red Hot Chili Peppers (but then they got old, like KISS), Johnny Cash, Pachobel, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, a few Mariah Carey songs, and perhaps Miyavi, who's on trial. There's a lot.
But yes, I agree that a lot of people listen to Japanese bands just because they're Japanese.

If you look at my post I said "...fans of anime will listen to music that has "J" in front of it just because it has it...". Sense you just said your not a fan anime, then you aren't the kind of fan I'm talking about.
But thanks for the info on the K-rock/pop C-rock/pop stuff. You learn something everyday!

Nope. I listen to it because I just like what I hear. I don't have to understand something to like it. When it comes down to it, I'll listen to most kinds of rock, regardless of language. Besides English-speaking music I like to lend an ear to German and Japanese stuff and a bit of some Finnish music my penpal sent me.

I listen to whatever catches my attention. Whether it be rap, rock, blue grass, trance, jazz, blues. Also you don't have to understand a song to like it. Some songs i like because of the rythem or the way it is played not because i can or can't understand them.

I listen to a lot of j-pop, c-pop, and some k-pop, but I also listen to music from the USA, Denmark, Germany, and etc.
To me, music is good no matter where it comes from.
And even if I can't understand it I can still enjoy it.
Lately I've been primarily listening to Japanese, as it helps me with my listening and comprehension skills in the Japanese class I'm taking at college. I've found that singing along with lyrics and listening to songs has really improved my pronuncation and understanding of the language.
So for me it's not only fun, it's educational.

i listen to pretty much** everything*.
*and by everything, i do not mean "ohh i listen mostly to rock and theres this one jazz artist i like, but i hate country and rap." i mean i am a hip-hop head, an indie rock elitist, a hardcore jazz enthusiast, an angry metalhead, a gutter punk wishing it was still 1970, techno nerd who both rejects & accepts the label IDM and believer in the fact that alt-country is the most solid genre ever.
**one qualifier ["pretty much" everything]: i dislike pop-punk and classic rock.
sorry to ramble, but I AM AN AUDIOPHILE and do not want to be misrepresented. some of my favorite bands/artists are tom waits, nick cave, keiji haino, mr. bungle, the blood brothers/neon blonde, the mc5, danzig, the wu-tang clan, the old 97s, blind guardian, coltrane, the parkas, einsturzende neubauten, gwar, neko case, mastodon, cannibal ox, venetian snares, marc ribot, biggie smalls, be your own PET, frank zappa, the joy division, black flag, mike ladd, and many more...so on into infinity.

It really doesen't matter where the music came from or is it in english, japanese, finnish or spanish... What does matter is if the music is good.
Yes, most of the music I listen is from some other country than my own, for example, I like Gackt, but that is because I like his music, not because it came from Japan.
I listen all kinds of music, but metal is what I try to avoid..
I like: HIM, Gackt, L'Arc~en~ciel, The Rasmus, Whitney Houston (yes, for real), 3 Doors Down and so on...

they aren't that great theyre alright id give'em a one and a half out of five
I agree with that. From what I've heard, I think they're more obnoxious than anything; the vocals just tend to grate on my nerves a little bit. *shrugs* Go figure.
And yeah, I listen to Japanese music-- anime sdtks, no less. But it's not because I'm a Japanophile or anything, I just like the sound of the music, the rythm of it. The same way I'd pick up a sdtk from an American film, be it rock, instrumental, whatever.
Other than that, I have a pretty eclectic taste: jazz, blues, a little metal, classical, SOME rap--though I tend to be annoyed with the most recent hits-- folk, soul, emo... Just about anything but country!!

I listen mostly to J-Urban music (J-R&B, J-Rap, etc.), but I enjoy pretty much all foreign music.
I used to listen to american music, but now I can't stand it. What keeps me away from it is that I feel the american music industry is flooded with so much fakes and wanna-be's that it's hard to find a good artist, much less a song anymore. Everything is so generic...

Don't worry about it. 90% of what I listen to isn't Asian either.
As for me, I listen mostly to David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Cocteau Twins, various New Wave artists, stuff like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Rob Zombie and any number of other things, but mostly western music from the 80's or earlier.

i'll listen to just about anything, other then that country crap, shania twain ruined that for me. i listen to classical, opera, the odd bit of pop now and then (i was a product of the moffatt fandum when i was younger) rock, rap if the mood takes me, dance, even some jpop. i don't even care if i don't understand a word that's being said, so long as the artist/band/group sounds like they have talent, and/or the song sounds intelligent, or just sounds good in general, i'll probably listen to it, (so long as brittney spears, backstreet boys, nsync, or the *****cat dolls didn't have anything to do with it).

Right now i'm listening to PATD, FOB, Yellowcard, PCD, The Gorillaz, Shakira, DaddyYankee, Fort Minor, and Kelly Clarkson So yes i do have a lot of favorite american bands. However i find that I'm listening to a lot more J-rock and j-pop bands like Asian Kung-fu Generation, Bikyorn, Mayya Sakemoto and I listen to a lot of anime sdtks . To me, it doesn't matter if the song is in english or not as long as it makes me feel something.

Jrock has ruled my life for the past few years. Hm... I've been listening to a lot of Vidoll (hence the avatar ^_^), Daisuke Asakura (and the whole DA Family)Schwarz Stein, Hora ~god synthesis, Kaya's (from Schwarz Stein)'s solo project, Dir en grey, AnicCafe, Ayabie, +DespairsRay+, D'erlanger, alice nine, baroque, cali=gari, Guniw Tools, Karma Shenjing, Silver Ash, Penicillin, Kuroyume, Pierrot, Aikaryu...
But I do listen to other non-Japanese bands, like Rammstein, 30 Seconds to Mars (only their first album, though... I never got into their new stuff), A Static Lullaby... and I love Chris Vrenna's music ^_^

I listen to everything except rap and country. Rock is definatly
my favorite genre. I also listen to anything from jazz to classical.
I'm only really into jazz and classical because I play classical piano
and saxophone in a jazz band. Then I play bass in a rock band.

i agree. i dont listen to a whole lot of hiphop/rap. i hear it from friends, but no particular fondness to it. jpop and jrock are okay, i just dont understand what theyre saying becuse im not fluent in japanese, nor do i speak more than a few words in it. mostly i listen to nu-metal (as it is technically called) like SOAD, some others that i cant classify like: Linkin Park, AFI, Weezer, Nickelback, and plenty of singles by various bands.

i like metal right know im lisening to slipknot and AFI.i like alot of j pop too.
What the hell. I listen to what sounds appealing to me. Kinda from the Barbie Girl song to Korn and such. I listen to J-pop as well.
Don't know if anyone said this yet, but sometimes you don't always have to understand the lyrics to get the song. Sometimes it's all in the beat; rythm; the actual MUSIC. I like Techno the most though. It gives me something to move my body to. Well, that's all me anyway.

I am carefully restraining myself from making any comments on P!ATD, Linkin Park, and scores of J-whatever. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and as long as I'm not forced to listen-- blah blah blah, I THINK YOU HAVE LAME TASTE IN MUSIC. ;P
But I still love you anyways. ♥
Personally, I like a lot of glamrock. I am fairly obsessed with David Bowie (Church of Areaology, anyone?), and also love Slade, Sweet, New York Dolls, and just generally things in that vein. Ohh, Lou Reed, too. I've recently really started to like Pink Floyd a lot, I think they must have just been too mellow for me when I was younger or something.
I do like some J-pop and J-rock too, mainly things I was really fond of when I was fourteen or so. L'arc and the pillows, pretty much. And anything from the DDR soundtrack, because that stuff is like crack
And, because music posts tend to go on forever, and I can never shut up, I also love Frou Frou / Imogen Heap, and the Dresden Dolls.

I listen to some songs in English but mostly J-pop and C-pop. I'll admit, I can't understand J-pop songs since I don't know Japanese but C-pop isn't foreign to me. I have a few K-pop ones but not much. I listen to what ever sounds nice to me. :] I especially like Hacken Lee's songs and Nicholas Tse's.

I listen to mostly C-pop , t-pop, j-pop, a little korean. I actually like alot of American music rock (that does not involves "screamers"), most pop (yes I still like the Backstreet Boys), and I'd say John Mayer type stuff. But now that I have a choice I definetely choose Asian pop over American 90 percent of the time. I can't stand J-rock of what I have heard of it. Techno and dance are cool sometimes. It doesn't really bother me that I don't know what there saying. I like the beat better. I was never than into music before but now I can't get enough. I really like Ai Otsuka, Ken Harai, Ayumi Hamasaki, Jay Chou, SHE, F4, Angela Chang, Hikaru Utada, Nicky Lee, Sammie Cheng. Ireally want to try some European bands, since I like all the Asian music they might be cool to. I may be wrong, but it seems like American music is more isolated, with less outside influence, which might be why foreign music sounds so different.

I mean, Greman rock isn't called G-rock, Swedish rock isn't called S-rock, so what makes Japan so special that it has to have "J" in front of it?
every type of music rocks
