Greetings all… I’m one of those crazy kids who’s always making art. I love getting feedback on my stuff, because it’s the only way I can grow. That’s the goal right..
So I figured I would start a thread where I can post my work.
I draw everyday so I’m always making updates…
I’ve been doing animation in Hollywood for 6-7 years now. I’ve been doing American comic books as long as I could hold a pencil. Manga is my newest love…
So I’m trying to mix all three into something I can call my own.
Please feel free to comment on my work. ( you love it, you hate it )
Thanks for this opportunity.

It's not a style that really appeals to me, but it is very well done. You're a very experienced artist and obviously know what you're doing, at least in americanized comics.
As a suggestion, I'd go a little less on the tones or get more creative with them. Try to make the tones less bold. I noticed that a lot of the shading you do is done the same way so it really gives off an american-comic feel. These are only suggestions for if you're trying for a more authentic manga look. I'm not an expert, I'm just noting the differences I would notice while reading a japanese manga versus a western manga.
Either way, your art is stunning! (I especially love Ichigo! ~^_^~) The first story you put up with the faceless samurai seems very interesting and contains more manga elements than your other works. I can't wait to read more.

i'm 28, i've been working on it hard for 13 years now..
when i was 15 i picked up a copy of Rob Liefelds X-Force #1

it's a hard road, but worth it....i hope...
thanks again, it helps me believe all this time has been worth the effort.

03-16-2006, 08:18 AM
You're good! But it's not American Manga. XD It's like... comics. Tone it down a bit on the comic feel. Maybe you should try copying someone's manga style, like draw a few fan arts, and then go back to drawing your own, just so you can get in the right feel. Or, ignore me, and just do what you think is best. =D
Anasatcia
03-16-2006, 08:20 AM
You're kinda right about that. For Amarican style, he has it pretty down. But manga....keep trying hard.
UrbanRevolution
03-16-2006, 08:33 AM
ya i'm walking a fine line.... but if you draw an american style you can get jobs doing american comics...Rob Liefeld is publishing my first work this summer.... if you can draw a Manga style maybe TP will give you a job..
if you can make something new but not to different maybe you can change the world...
i'm working on all of the above

Which did you start drawing first? Comics style or manga/anime style?
Fore you stated on the comic styled ones, I was telling my son here, it looks very American styled.
I liked the comic style best myself!! Looked like something out of one of my favorite old titles, The Darkness.
Nice!

Thank you very much! I’m starting to get the hang of it....
I’ve never used comicworks.....but I did my toning with Photoshop.
I only use Manga studio to do FX right now...
I only have the dabut version.
I use a lot of hot keys, and the dabut version is very limited.
But I’m still learning.

04-07-2006, 12:47 AM
Oooooooh....O___O I love the eyes one. I think it's my favorite piece I've seen of yours so far. It's so hauntingly beautiful. The contrast between the yellow eyes and the purple skin is wonderful, and I love the use of empty space. Um...your inks are decent, but you need to use a bit more contour in some of the lines. You seem to know what you're doing, then somehow you backtrack. Like, pieces of the image work on their own, but when you zoom out, they clash and fall apart.
On the sequential art...I'd say you need to slow down juuuuuust a little. The pacing is too...how do I say this...even. Like, when the boy in that first one is waking up and then when he realizes he's late--you use almost the same pacing, the same panel size. It speeds up the eyes over where he's waking up and slows them down when you need to hurry. You should vary your panel sizes just a little more. ^__^ Hopefully that helps! I love your toning jobs, though, you have a knack for it (unlike me...stamp n00b on my forehead, please). And ze muscles, zey are zo big! O_O...lol, definitely an American influence. ^^; Nothin' wrong with that, though!
You also say you're dark...it's odd, because you sound like you don't believe it. My art is really cutesy, IMO, but I consider myself a very dark person. This is gonna be a problem...^^;

Thanks for looking at my work and commenting. Sometime’s I’m so close to it I can’t see it.
I feel like I’ve been caught… the Glove pages you commented on as far as layout, makes perfect since.. Each panel was originally from a set of story boards for an animated pilot I did. So they were all the same size. I reformatted them to fit into the Manga pages, so I had less control over the layout. Good eye.
All of the color work is for an upcoming book for Arcade comics. I feel it’s my best work to date…
I’m working on my Inks every day… it’s a long process.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

04-07-2006, 07:47 PM
Greetings all… so I’m here at stage one, and I thought I would share my process with you. Here are my layouts for a six page intro (submission/Rsom)
I really don’t know what I’m doing ,but maybe it’ll help both of us figure out what I’m doing right and what I can improve on..
Stage one: Plot… I have my treatment done. (Full story and outline of my character actions) So it’s up to me to choose a good section of a chapter to give a good example of what I can do, set up my character's, and my story. I’m going for the Action adventure story so I want to showcase my skill set in that area. Taking into consideration Manga/Comic stories are about people and their journeys in life, I also want to display the human side of my characters. Don't forget, good art is only half of what makes a great comic great. You need good writing too!
Stage two: Layout my pages…. This involves panel/character placement, emotions, flow, and pacing. As I layout my pages I fill in my script or dialogue. I do a quick first pass to get an idea of what they’re saying and how they feel about what’s going on in the world around them. This is always subject to change but most of the time I go with my gut. If I over think things I tend to kill the raw emotion. At this point I don’t care how clean my pages look, this is just to give my minds eye a feeling of how things are going to work out in the end.

Stage 3-4 finished pages.
It’s been a long weekend I managed to get 6 pages done in 2 days. My record I think.
I’ve chosen not to bore you with my penciled pages and move on to the inks.
All in all they’re close enough to the same thing.
I inked on the original 11/17 paper giving me more control. I’ve realized that inking is a huge skill and your tools are only as good as you are. I also changed the last page to give a demonstration of how graphic I want my story to get.
Most of my speed lines are done in Manga Studio.
I’ve been retooling my script to the point of satisfaction. But it’s still subject to change.

Whew! your stuff's great! Don't take to heart what people say about your art. There is no one-set style for manga. It's all different. That's what makes manga so great! I mean, nobody draws exactly like somebody else(unless they want to..^.^;;) look at the different styles out there...from Dragon Ball Z to Sailor Moon to Fushigi Yugi to Paradise Kiss To Peach Girl to Angel Sanctuary...they are all great. Your art is !wow! lol, and can be considered manga. But in order for it to be considered 'manga' you don't have to use less tones or adjust your inking style unless you want to. They do have some good advice though. Luv the big boobs, lol! now im babbling..I do have a kind of 'request' ..if you have time...try a pencil drawing of a person with like, flowing hair. your hair reminds me of dragon ball z being pointy and all XD

Hey nice work.....
Your american style work is awesome especially the coloured stuff. I grew up on marvel and image comics so thats a style i'm very comfortableb with. I also create manga now though (even though i have only ever read 1 book - shame) and find that it is a bit tricky to break away from the american style. With every page i do and then every manga pic i see afterwards i find something in my work that can be improved. Personally i feel that manga is more raw and gritty than americanised books, sort of a natural flow and less polished. Mind you although i think my work is pretty good it could well be quiet crap lol.
I would be grateful if you checked out my work on my website www.lab5comics.com and let me know what you think (Look at DARKclouds Phase 2 though a s DC1 is no good anymore).
And check this pic http://www.tokyopop.com/LABrown/art/107047.html
Thnx and great work :D

God man i read up top there about being engaged making a living not having time to do manga etc.......
AND I'M WITH YOU MAN!!! i try so hard and push so hard but its a hard industry to conquer!!! I'm in australia where there basically is no industry for local artists......
and i'm getting engaged lol. If only we could all give up our day job and live simply by our art and our passions.
Goodluck and thank you. :D

Hey man hows things,
Hows the work going. Its a hard slog but i'm still at it.... reaching the 90page mark.
I would like to think i'm doing ok but i'm not getting much feedback to justify the amount of time i'm putting into this book. Though as any comic champion would do i will endure this hardship and find the perseverance to see it through. post some new stuff up, show us what u've been working on.

hey hey..... hows things. I've started a myspace to replace my old website. Sort of not really doing comics at the moment, got a tattoo request from a stranger who found my work online so i'm back into my tattoo art :D Its a full leg hellraiser piece and its turning out crazy as hell. Done a bit of photo manip as well for shits and giggles.
My myspace address www.myspace.com/lab5studios its sort of like my art-friends-music promo place. Supporting our local aussie bands as well as some unsigned US ones.
Anyways, every time i go back to my comic work its evolved so taking a break is good.

I agree wit TheBohemian, she got some BACK on her lol! Very Bootylicious man. Good job. I think I know what you were doing for her, you were trying a sketchytype finish on her. I've even colored my sketches instead of inking them and coloring them. I do color underneath sketchlines sometimes though. Everyonce in awhile, I like the look of it. But alot of times nowadays I ink them. Very nice job man.

thanks,
this drawaing was not ment to be finished.... just a sketch with a PS textured bg.
ya her ass is huge / not my best work...but i'm happy you like it.
when i do ink... i use a brush pen and microns / copic pens. (as on page 7)
i never use markers because they fade over time.
if anything i spot blacks with a brush or do my fills with PS to save ink.
have fun

And that's why I love it, because it's not a perfect rendition of Bleach. I personally find it interesting to see manga done in a western style, and a western style done in a manga format. A current example would be the Batman: Gotham Knight animated video that just came out.
Once again, that's just my taste.
