Being a Scottish person let me enlighten you and other people who do not know what a kilt is.

A kilt is a men's garment that consists primarily of a length of cloth wrapped around the waist and secured by means of buckles and straps; it is usually worn with a pouch for money (and other items) called a sporran. The historical great kilt was long enough to drape up over the shoulder, or use as foul weather gear, but is rarely seen in modern times. The kilt is associated with traditional Scottish Highland dress and, as such, is almost always made of wool with a woven pattern called tartan (sometimes called plaid). (Traditionally, women do not wear kilts, but often wear tartan skirts.)

Today most Scotsmen see kilts as formal dress or ceremonial dress. They are often worn at weddings or other formal occasions, while there are still a few people who wear them daily. Kilts are also used for parades by groups like the Scouts, and in many places kilts are seen in force at highland games and pipe band championships as well as being used for Scottish country dances and ceilidhs. The British Army and armies of other Commonwealth nations still continue to have kilts as part of a dress uniform, though they have not been used in combat since World War I.

Oh, I already know, but thanks for the enlightenment :D . I always wanted to try drawing a guy in a really, really short one, but I'm not quite sure how it'll come out.

Ooh! I know: A Kittyboy with a ultra-short kilt!! *dances around the room with joy then orders some for her kittyboys**

Mmmm, men in kilts = yummy. But only if they have nice manly legs, if they have scrawny legs it doesn't quite look right.

perhaps men in kilts if the men in question are in anime or manga look good, but in real life? nooooo.. >_< it's just wrong! (well unless they're really in scotland with bagpipes and everything).

Some men can look delicious in kilts. (not really the example above XD) But what is funny in the UK is that when a guy hires out a kilt for a formal do (usually people do that as a kilt is only worn on special occasions, you don't own one unless you have a lot of money or save up for one normally)... all sorts of random crap gets left in the sporrans!

What I think is really cool about the outfit though, are the little daggers (dirks) strapped to your calves *loves*

Aratos

I used to wear a kilt for when I danced.

Actually, this year my cousin is getting married and there are quite a few people are coming from Scotland, so all the people from Scotland are going to wear them for that day. My dad and brother were supposed to but they chickened out =/

I see no problem with it. If my family was scotish, I would wear one. Its like a family tadition. your father and brother should be honored to wear them. I kinda find it as a disgrace to the family. Yet; I'm not in your family, so; I'll just stay out of it. Have fun at the wedding. And I hope the wedding goes well for you and the family.

Its also the fact that we'd have to rent it for the day, and so much money on rental kilts is rediculous x.x; I'm in the wedding party so we've already forked over enough money xD;;; (especially since I've had to change my whole apearance x.x; ) I don't like weddings to begin with, but kilts are for formal things like that =3

Hey, as long as you look good in a bathing suit, you can get a chick Rednal. I see you're on the kilt thread Kyo-sama. :) Well, my high school has kilts/plaid skirts as part of the uniform. Here's a death-from-humiliation worthy moment that happened to my best friend. Her dad had to come in to for her younger sister's presentation, and they have some (not very much!) Scottish blood in them. So he was in all Socottish garb, like kilt, bagpipes, everything! Then he came to the classrom (ours) dressed like that! We still tease her about it! And some of my guy friends dressed so insanely weird for Halloween. Mitch was the Tooth fairy, with leotards and tutu, dress, Corey was a woman in hot pink dress and heels, and i forget what paul was...and mind you we're in Gr.8. Corey and Mitch looked hilarious!

Well, yeah, of course they'd be cheap if they were ex-rental! XD I think quite a few other people on this thread have confirmed how expensive they are to buy/rent for special occasions. Maybe outside of scotland, further south, it's more expensive. When I was at uni (Warwick), whenever there was a formal do, all my scottish bloke friends would start complaining about the cost in renting them.

Dude, I live in Scotland and the only time I ever see someone in a kilt is if:

1: The Rugby is on
2: The football is on
3: Weddings
4: An old guy who lives in this town likes to ride his bike wearing one. And he happens to be as English as an afternoon cream tea.

Therefore, having seen this man flapping about in his grubby man-skirt for most of my life, I can no longer find them sexy... Shame... (that and my uncle mooned me when he was wearing one. Wrong >_<).

Oh, and let's not forget Sean Connery, the Scottish Milkman-cum-Double Agent who loves Scotland so much he doesn't even LIVE here XD

I feel for you. i hate it when people moon you. >.< that's just wrong. Especially when the guys in your class try to do it.I've...been...blinded...Well, that's what my reaction would be if they actually succeeded. last year 2guys got up on the desks and tried to strip, but they chickened and only got their shirts off and their buttons undone before they hopped off the desks and the teacher came back in. It wasn't a pretty sight. and one of the guys that did that shoved a really geeky guy's head through the screen in a window. :p that window's been so you can climb out of it ever since, and it was really funny to watch. :)

WOW I founda whole bunch of stuff off of Google. Lot's of shops and such. Also neat to see some modern variations of kilts.

Here are some interesting images I found:

I do too, actually. I think it's interesting that people are experimenting with variations, but you can't beat traditional tartans.

One of my most manly guy friends wears a kilt. He also wears sarongs that he picked up in Hawaii. Former football player, Highland Games athlete, 'n' everything.

Not much is hotter than a guy comfortable in a skirt. :3 (Unless it's a guy in glasses. But probably not paired with a skirt.)

damn, i came in too late again. my soapy has taken another odd twist in the plot.
next episode:
in an odd twist of fate will the fan favorite tsuzuki make a tear jerking apperance? will tsuzuki run in the middle of the battle in a despreate attempt to end the fight. what is the strange secret she is hiding from everyone? will the kitty boy kyo-sama convince the state alchamist he means no harm, in his man skirt...i...uh...i...i mean kilt, yes, kilt. will we ever see this pic of kyo in a kilt? All these questions and more to be answered next time on soapy forums (working title). stay tuned. (all soay forums and similar threads produced and distrubited care of tokyopop messageboards.)

Kurapica

I didn't mean for it to become a battle. I think I've become Kyo's drug dealer. Somehow this part reminds me of when Sakura tried to stop Naruto and Sasuke from fighting on the roof of a building. I know Kyo means no harm, I was just trying to get away from him... But it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. I seriously shouldn't have given him catnip.

Well, I'm glad you find it entertaining. :)

nikitia
05-20-2006, 07:51 PM
ya know cat nip has funny side affects, it'll either turn a cat crazy or sleepy. both effects are also apart of a high. but hey live and learn right?

Kurapica
05-20-2006, 07:58 PM
Catnip always makes my cat high, so I just assumed Kyo would get high (for fun). :D

I didn't expect him to like.... get attached to me.
*following and rubbing in leg*i love you haha
See? I didn't mean for it to turn out this way. You're gonna have to get a replacement for me for the next episode. How about Lt. Havoc or Lt. Armstrong? :)

nikitia
05-20-2006, 08:09 PM
an understudy really? well if we must.

oh and that leg thing. my advice is to say the same thing i say to those who get to "attached" to me.

ahem "I know you want me... but get off my leg!" a little conceited yes, but the dropped jaws, and laughs from neighbouring people make it worth it.

Wait.... How could Kyo not mean any harm? He tried to attack me with stone missiles!!!

nikitia
05-20-2006, 08:27 PM
its all in the timing my friend. i had to learn that the hard way, my family may as well all be aspiring comedians, on my mums side. my advice the unexpected is always the funniest, so long as it doesn't seemed strained and rehersed. example kyo and his kilt wearing days would be a prime laugh for myself if he would post the picture. me on the other hand, if i wear a skirt i'll get a laugh cus i havn't worn one since my grad i think. prime laugh from my sibs right there. quick wit just adds to the prize.

kyo-sama post the pic already!

Kilt jokes are more than welcome!!

*shudders* One of my friends after swimming once wrapped a towel around himself and it looked like a skirt from the back. So me and another friend yelled at him "NICE SKIRT!" and then he turned around to face us, whipped of the towel and yelled "It's not a skirt, it's a KILT!". Thank god he was wearing smething underneath XD

Me? Not look good in a kilt? Insult!

Ok, so i've not worn one for a few years, and if I tried wearing mine now it'd probably be too short and look stupid, but that's not the point. I look great in a kilt.

Well, no, not as such. Statistically there's probably a much lower chance. And what about funerals?

I happen to love the idea of kilts for my characters, and they form part of their clothes designs.
I placed a couple of pictures in the art blog here:

Those aren't real kilts. Those are modern heresies. Traditionally, kilts are tartan. Always have been, and them modern attempts to make non-tartan kilts are by idiots who just don't get it. Personally I'd consider it a great dishonour if I wore one of them things.

clicky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilt#General_definition_of_a_kilt)- no kilts on wiki that aren't tartan, see?

Aratos

What? yes. Maybe. Probably. Define "hot".

More importantly, I have a question for you folks: traditional kilts. Y'know, those things that have a bit that goes voer the shoulder and all that? Why does no-one ever stick those in comics???

Drunken_butterfly

I am Scottish, so my love for Kilts is in my blood. I love bagpipes and kilts and golf ^_^
Good old Scotland
my middle name is actually Scott. it used to be our last name when my family *great grandfather, great great grandfather) lived in Scotland, but when we traveled to America, our last name was changed so people thought we were American (better chance of getting a job). So now, to keep our heritage alive, every first born son's middle name is Scott ^_^

Hmmm, my school's marching band uniform is a full-blown kilt and...well, I dunno because I'm not in band. But they've got the hats, jackets, knee-high socks, kilts...
Yeah. Our mascot is a Scottish highlander, so hey.
We also have a good number of people who play the bagpipes for the band, and they play them for most of the songs they do.
So I never really thought it was strange. Outside of my school, though, I could understand the lack of...kilt-exposure.
