I recently watched this movie for the first time and it ROCKED!!! I'm half Japanese (my dad is from Japan) and it was really cool to watch because I understood most of the parts that were in Japanese. The sword stuff was AWESOME too. I'm obsessed with swords and stuff.

I have this movie on DVD. Yeah! It was really great! I think I did a report on this and how discipline / formality is different between countries. Yep.
I really recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it.

There is ALOT of differences between Japan and America. Trust me I know. I can read Japanese (but not kanji) and understand a pretty good bit of Japanese, so I read manga in Japanese before they come out in english. It's cool 'cause my dad goes to Japan on buisness alot and he always buys me manga from the used book stores. On his last trip he got me Black Cat volumes 4-12 and vol. 29 of Naruto.

I've had the DVD for quite a while. I love this movie even though I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise and haven't been even since before he went balls out crazy. Ken Watanabe was especially excellent in The Last Samurai.

Yes! Ken Watanabe is an awesome addition in this movie! Hell, I'd have to say I liked him better then Tom Cruise's character.
I've been noticing that Ken Watanabe is appearing on alot of movies I have enjoyed. You go Ken!

O_o
Well, he's the leader of the other group. The one Tom Cruise had a relationship with. Um. (Might as well look in the back of the case of The Last Samurai. He should be there)

I liked it a lot. It was a really interesting portrayal of the differences between Japanese and Americans, and the Japanese village was set up beautifully.
I would have bought the movie solely for the parts where they show the village, even if I hadn't liked the rest of the movie.

What is Kairo about?
Oh man, that's the million dollar question. It's really complicated. Check out the imdb page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286751/ and search for some interviews with Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
I'd give you my theory on Kairo but that would take a lot of typing and thinking that I can't manage at the moment. It's definitely a film worth watching, especially if you are into Japanese culture.

NO. American man being the last samurai? No. Of course, he probably wasn't considered a samurai, but if that was the case, why didn't he bring his pistol with him. Why only bows? That's stupid. Even if it was a made up story, if they're gonna try to make it like it was a real story they should make sure their history is correct. Then there's the fact that the girl fell in love with a gaijin who killed her husband. I guess she figured they were only doing their job huh? Other parts of it were good though.

Not a real story? Well there's a history book called "The Last Samurai", which goes into great detail about the fellow who led the samurai in a revolt after the emperor got rid of them, and commited suicide on the battlefield. And so on and so forth. It's based on real events. Shame I'm too damned tired to make sense here.
Yeah. Great film.

Exactly my point. If they wanted to make it as real as possible, why the hell is an American with them? The American wants to be a samurai (of course he can't), and they accept him as a sort of honory member. That's just stupid. The samurai, who are against westernization accept a westerner? Not only that, he wasn't a samurai, yet won't use western weaponry (guns)? That part is just stupid. Since they base it on real events, it's stupid to ask us for to act like something so absurd can happen. Like I said though, the other parts were good.

First off- I did like this movie
Second- Only an American would write a story in which the last samurai was American.
Third- this movie was very loosely based on historical fact (sorta a folk-lore kinda thing)
for a much better samurai movie watch "Seven Samurai"
