View Full Version : Tokyo Pop Made a Boo Boo? Chibi Vampire Vol. 1

I don't exactly know the process for puting together the books but I am pritty sure that someone made a mistake on the Covers for Chibi Vampire Vol. 1.
The store I work at hasn't put them out on the shelf yet but the copies of Vol. 1 they have in the back had the covers on as if the book was reading left to right (American/Korean Style), but the pages inside read left to right(Japanese Style). I thought the book was Korean untill I opend it up to take a look. :confused: All my other Japanese manga I own have the covers going in the same direction as the stuff on the inside.
Don't know why I had to point this out. It just kinda bugged me since I was going to buy the book, but now I want to wait and see if they fix it, assuming there is something to be fixed and Tokyopop isn't just trying to be creative :p

If this happened to a marvel or DC comic, all the people who bought it would rejoice and have dance parties because they would be elated that in twenty years, the comic would be worth a hundred dollars instead of only 95 (in twenty years, comics will cost $80 an issue, due to inflation). You know they would.

Actually... Considering that most manga fans can flip from left-to-right and then right-to-left at a moment's notice (those who read the english SJ do it ALL THE TIME for the articles), it probably won't be too hard to get used to. Great fun, though!
As for DC... Their comics should be worth $0.001 in the future... Mostly because the characters are boring! *Face-faults*

People don't understand how true a statement this is... As a collector of many eccentric items such as books, comics, shoes, toys, cars, manga, movies, etc. I bought my copy of Chibi Vampire because one day like Sailor Moon it is going to be worth more money than it originally cost!!! I own a misprint book. A book that isn't that popular mind you. I was able to sell it for 9 times more than I paid for it. I didn't even pay the original price. Manga is no different from a comic book, book or a baseball card. As lovers of manga, it is our job to make manga cool... Then, I can sell my complete collection of an unwrapped Sailor Moon for a couple of grand...

No decision has been made (some important people are out of town)... My personal recommendation (not an official company statement) is to just buy the misprint book but KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. You may need it later...

I went ahead and took the mod's advice. I am just keeping my recipt in case it bothers me after they fix it... ya actually i just really wanted to read it... i couldn't hold out... shame... ;)

XP I bought a copy for Rednal's Response and my own pleasure, and I'm going to keep it even if they DO 'fix' it. :D I can still read it just fine, and it's kind of fun having a misprinted book.
*Shifty eyes* Hopefully it won't happen again, but once is cool.

For those who bought their copy, are about 20 to 30 pages printed twice? In my copy a fair number of pages were replaced by duplicate ones.

That's a printer error. Books are printed in signatures (sets of pages,) and once in a while, one gets a duplicate signature bound in.

My guess is that there was a misnumber in page copying and the stacks were inserted wrong when published o_o *has seen the publishing process before...it's CRAAAZY with all those machines O_O*
I wonder which is worse, having to buy a dvd that had an error in it and then getting the fixed version of it or a misprinted manga...i don't think dvds are that hard to remake, so i'd asume the manga but the manga is cheaper whereas the dvd may or may not have a discount o.o....
whee~~ I've seen the anime of this (Karin..not..Chibi...Vampire...*TWITCH*) and I thought it was *quite* interesting xDDD
I thought the title was changed back to Karin? o.O Least that's what I thought the site said...

If you got a copy like that you should be able to exchange it at the store for a good one. A binding error like that will generally happen only with a small number of copies.

I picked up a copy of it, and it really isn't bothersome, for me anyhow. Even if it's OEL just by habit I usually open it backwards and then realize oh.. so for me it's all good. ^^ Even if they do correct the cover I'll probably hold on to the one I have *10 dollars is really not worth me keeping the receipt that long* and buy the correction as well. Cause...I'm like that.

I went back and I had purchased the only one they had, so I ended up exchanging it for something else. I hope to find another copy at another store.

Can you get a new Chibi Vampire with the cover placed as it should be or not, the shop I got it from says that they havn't heard anything so now I ask here.
What is going to happen, nothing or something??

Chibi Vampire Vol. 1 has gone in for a second printing. The cover on the second printing (and all future printings) is aligned the correct way: right-to-left. However, there are still first printing copies out there, so not all stores are going to have the corrected cover...yet. If you can find one that does, they may be willing to exchange your version for one of the new ones. That's if you really want to replace it. Chibi Vampire seems to be selling pretty well, so if it continues gaining in popularity, a misprinted Volume 1 may actually be worth money some day.

That's all good and well, but the shop I got my chibi vampire manga from says that they don't know anything about a reprint of chibi vampire #1.
Is this only in the US or what??

Bookstores usually don't know anything about reprints. With most books you can't even tell what printing it is until you open the book and look at the publication info page. Toward the bottom you will see numbers like this:
10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
If it ends in 1, it's a first printing. If the 1 is gone but the 2 is there, it's a 2nd printing. Etc.
The 2nd printing of Chibi Vampire volume 1 will be easy to tell apart because its cover will have the correct orientation. However, the ISBN--the number by which a book is identified--is exactly the same as that of the original printing, so there is no way the bookstore will be able to tell which version they are ordering in if they get more copies. Sorry about that.

The shop I bought my chibi vampire manga from has run into problems with the pepole they get the manga from, they keep sending the wrong mangas so I havn't gotten the manga with the right cover because of it. This is getting on my nerves, I havn't heard anyone in here having a problem like that.
Is the delivery to scandinavia that bad??

We don't have any rights to distribute English-language manga to scandinavia, so if you're getting it there, it's a kind of grey-market thing we know nothing about. Sorry!

Some info on the title change: Chibi Vampire is a title invented by Tokyopop for their English release of this manga series. It is a decision doubtless driven by marketing potential, for such a name is far more likely to catch attention and pique a potential reader’s interest than the bland and non-descriptive original title “Karin,” which it shares with its late 2005 anime adaptation. (The anime has not been licensed for release in the States as of the time of this writing, but one can probably expect a similar renaming in the event that it is picked up.)

So yeah, marketing. And I can kind of see it too. Someone browsing in a bookstore is going to be much more intrigued by this title than by the simple "Karin." Sorry, but we are a publishing company, and actually selling the books is part of the job!

So it's said, but I'm more inclined to believe that it was renamed to avoid confusion with "Kamichama Karin", sort of the same way Viz renamed "Detective Conan" to "Case Closed" (although that, I hear, was a licensing issue).
As for the misprinted cover, I've still got my Dragonball 16 with the misprinted spine, just for the historical value. Viz replaced those free of charge and didn't even ask for the misprints back. I'll keep my misprinted Chibi Vampire as well, although I might replace it with a reprint if the misprint turns out to be that valuable later. I think I remember seeing one repeated page, but I'd have to read it again to make sure. It didn't bother me quite as much as the copy of Slayers Special book 4 that I fortunately happened to read not long after I bought it, so I could still find the receipt. That one had the last eight pages misprinted, including the inside back cover, which had the next page of the misprinted section. :eek: I traded that one in rather than buying a new one at cost.

Hiya, just wondering if the second printing of Chibi Vampire vol. 1 with correct cover orientation have been released yet. It's been a few months since it was posted about the seond printing and I've checked three other stores besides the store I regularly patronize, but they don't have it either. I get a weird feeling everytime I look at my collection with only vol. 2 & 3 and vol. 1 missing.
Any information regarding this would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

The third print edition of Chibi Vampire volume 1 was released in September, and the fourth wil be released at the end of January.

Thanks for the info, but actually the store I usually go to never received ANY of the Chibi Vampire vol 1s, not even the ones with the wrong cover...so I find that a bit strange...the stores I go to are around the chinatown/little tokyo area...

Yeah, I've done that too ever since the release of of the first volume, but the store keeps telling me that they have it on their list of mangas to get, but their distributor is not stocking up on them for some reason...

Um, you live in Los Angeles, right? Since you mentioned Little Tokyo... You can try just normal bookstores, you know...Borders, B&N, it doesn't have to be a specialty store.

Well normal book stores I've been to have a limited selection and they're a lot farther than Chinatown and Little Tokyo. Yea, but anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
