i've read and i like it very much. It's a tough nut to crack in the beginning but the way the story unfolds is done masterly. I've not yet read the complete series though.

i read it and enjoyed it. can't really remember much about it cuz it was years ago. my mom says he becomes a worm in the later books, is it true?

The bit where the worms become sacred and unridable after the god emperor leaves a sliver of his conciousness in each of them you mean?

woo~! Dune is such a fabulous book! The rest of the series is good too, but It's kind of downhill from the first one, especially after the 3rd (God Emperor I think, but that might be the 2nd) after the 3rd you just don't get the same vibe I think...
The first one is a masterpiece though x3 The depth of the wolrd Herbert creates is amazing. Everything from ecosystems to economies are totally believable. It's also a fabulous SF/Fantasy blend. It's set in the far future (Galactic Empires, hyperspace, and such), but on Dune there's a strong fantasy feel to it, with near-mythical beasts and seiges.

Paul's son,Leto, became the Worm in order to have gain a very long lifespan. Leto needed the time in order to complete his breeding project for the Atreides line. God of Emperor is sorta very philosophical kinda like Starship Troopers. There more discussion of life then action in the first novel.

yeah, I was thinking of the first four too. Heretics and Chapterhouse were both kinda different from the first four, they seemed to veer off the original storylines...

Muad 'dib!
Ah! My friend recommended Dune to me two years ago and I loved it! The whole universe is so dense and expansive. The last part of the original series I read was God Emperor of Dune. Not exactly my favorite one.
I enjoyed the prequel trilogy a great deal and recommend it. I believe you can pick up The Butlerian Jihad for less than $10 on clearance at a Barnes and Noble Bookseller.

ah the newer ones buy his son, Kevin Herbert i think it is, are not as good, and yes the last two are a little different, Frank Herbert's wife died while he wrote those two and so he was kinda going crazy before he died, but overall its an AWESOME-TASTIC SERIES!

the newer ones were written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Books 7 and 8 written from Frank's notes will be out in September I believe ;)
