Ah, I don't know whether to put this here or in "Ask the Editors", but since it's RSoM specific, I'll place it here.
In reguards to one of the RSoM Contest rules:
I was wondering what counts as "gratuitous" violence? I don't want to give away my RSoM plot, but it's set in wartime, and involves a firefight between the two opposing groups. Both the protaganist and antagonist are shot, and one's killed. I'm not very good at graphic details like this, so it'll be as much implied as shown; I'm just wondering if this would count as "gratuitous", and thus affect my chances of becomeing a finalist (if that were to happen)?

Basically gore. You know intestines being ripped from the bodys and stuff. Fingers getting chopped off in good detail it is sickening. Decapitation. Uhhh... stuff like that.

^^;; Basically, don't over-do it. From what you've said, this should be more than adequate as an entry to RSoM.

Yeah, I agree with the others.
The anime movie 'Metropolis' was rated PG or soemthing because everytime someone got shot there was no blood, or you didn't see the actual shooting etc. Even Magic Knight Rayearth is rated 'youth 7+' despite having battles scenes where there is blood and cuts, but nothing really gory. Yours sounds fine.

do you think the manga Bleach is a title with Gratuitous Violence?
when some one gets cut by a sword you see a lot of blood, but no one seems to die.

The RSoM books are released as rated-T books. Anything you see in another T-rated TOKYOPOP book would probably be fine. If an entry is really excellent and we want to put it in but we determine it crosses the line in a few places, instead of disqualifying it we may ask for a couple panels to be redrawn for the book.

T is the kind of in the middle rating for manga and anime.

I think the thing is, Tokyopop doesn't want hundreds of dead people in their RSOM entries -- unless they're zombies.
I dunno ... I'd steer clear of as many OMG I'MMA CHOP YOU IN HALF AND MAKE YOU BLEED 100 LITERS OF BLOOD! scenes as humanly possible.

Zombies were rather popular in the last RSOM entries, weren't they?
I think "gratuitous violence" is violence where there doesn't need to be any. If people start chopping up villagers just do kill some time, that'd be gratuitous. If they start chopping up villiagers because said villiagers formed an angry mob and were about to sacrifice the virginal heroine to the main demon lord, that should be okay.

No! They specifically say no dismemberment! Therefore: no chopping up ANY villagers!
Also: HA! @ the chopping up people pictures. That made me laugh like so: HA!

Well, I'm writting a mystery manga. And one of the victims get's stabbed by a knife. What if I used the screen tone for blood. And the image for the person would be a small pool, would that be ok?

It should be fine, from what I've heard, so long as it isn't too graphic.

Cripes Queenie chan! I'm almost too scared to pick up volume 2 of The Dreaming now!
(Seriously, I loved volume 1. Keep up the good work. I'll definitely be picking up volume 2.)

Aww damnitt. Looks like I'm gonna have to make a whole new script for my entry (long way off anyways). I understand the need to limit excessive violence, but for people who work mostly in the Horror genre, it's pretty difficult... especially with my ideas. Oh well, no dismembered otherworldly psycho-creatures for me.
Maybe some puppies... or an evil demon bunnie with fluffy weapons and a gun that goes "Moop!".
