I'm not sure where to ask this, but here goes~

I'm wondering what events Tokyopop plans to organize for 2006?
I heard from an ex-Tokyo the turnover rate for Marketing is quite high.
Can fans expect for more meet and greets this year?

Ok! I guess this is as good a place as any for my question too!!!!!

How come TokyoPop doesn't come to the South for conventions? *Or I haven't seen you at any, feel free to correct me!* :( I mean as far as I can see there is something for everyone... East Coast, West Coast, Whatever IL falls into. ^^ But what about the south? GA or FL... even TX would be within driving distance. :( Why tokyopop? WHY???

Hi,

I'm the guy at TOKYOPOP that will be taking care of our conventions and events . Although, turnover in marketing has been high... we will continue to be reaching out to fans as much as possible. I'll try to post the events that we will be hosting or attending here in this section of the forum soe check back every once and a will for the latest updates.

What good conventions are in the South? If you know any we'd definately look into attending. If you know any of the convention organizers I'd be willing to come out anwer your questions, do a presentation on our latest and greatest titles and pass out some give-aways. :D

How does TP benefit from passing out freebies? TP really does give out a lot of free goods =O

It generally instills a sense of "positive" with the company. If you think good things about the company, you're more likely to buy from them. Basic marketing. :3

Yeah and freebies usually promote a particular title to be released. They try to increase sales of new "unknown" titles, ya know.

And dear JChen, I'm happy to figure out who takes care of convention-planning. ^^ I'd like to inform you that there is going to be an anime convention held in Montréal, Québec, Canada, June 10th and 11th. I was wondering if it'd be possible for Tokyopop to attend? Not the full kiosk you bring to Anime-Expo and Otakon, just a humble stand with some manga for sale, and a spokeperson to answer questions and allow fans to sign up for the free magazine would already be great.

This is the first real anime convention in Montréal, but it'll be pretty big, considering we'll have a whole University building to ourselves. Website address (http://www.otakuthon.com/)

Also, I think you need more fans here in Québec. All bookstores only carry manga from France, and I think it's sad that the only place I can find TOKYOPOP manga are at one bookstore, Indigo. We need more demand for TOKYOPOP manga so bookstores carry them!

If you think it'd be at all possible to participate to OtakuThon, I can PM you the e-mail of the person in charge of the Dealer's Room and relations with industry companies. Thank you. *bows*

Define good? I mean... our conventions are just as good as anyone elses seeing as how we obviously *the majority* can't just pick up and fly to MA, MD or CA whenever we want to go to a convention. *not that you were saying that but... define good?*

I think you guys should go to Anime Weekend Atlanta *it's a complete blast*, I'm sure they don't leave you off of their invite list.. so you could always choose to accept their invitation to come. There is also Metrocon. Lots of people go to these. I just said TX cause I could still drive there but I actually have no idea what conventions happen there. And there are a few more that take place in FL but I've never been or they aren't that big so I won't note them in my post but maybe someone else will.

Either way, I appreciate the fact that you asked for input whether you guys attend a convention in the South sometime soon or not.

I've said it a few times, though I don't know where - but it wouldn't hurt to look into Dragon*Con in Atlanta. It's the closest major Con I know of to me. XD hee. I have yet to go, though, so I'm not entirely sure if it's up to the minimum attendance rates you guys would feel worth going to.

@Veroniku

It's hard for us to determine what shows we will attend in Canada. We would probably partner up with one of the local Indigo stores if we came out. We could probably send an editor I might just come up.

Are you one of the organizers? Let me know and there's some information I might need you to PM.

Thanks

Sorry I didn't clarify. We used to have a policy that the only shows we would attend need to have 10,000 attendees. These ofcourse are the biggest shows. I'm trying to make TOKYOPOP more accessible to fans by going to smaller shows. I really like the smaller cons because we get a much greater response. Since we don't have the man power or resourced to go to ever show out there and research if it's worth us going I'm pretty much open to whatever suggestions you guys may have.

It's kind of hard to define good but basically shows that have been around for a while, that have a dedicated fan base, it would help if they would be able to invite us out because going to all these cons can get rather expensive for us and also shows where the convention may have invited out creators... whether Japanese or American. I'm sure there's more stuff that will determine if it makes sense for us to go to a show but this should suffice for now. :D

Sending an editor would be a great idea! I vote for Blu_Moon. XD

Seriously though, well I will be holding a panel in that convention, but I haven't met in real life any of the commitee people as of yet (I'm too busy and live kinda far @.@).

I will PM you the e-mail of the 'chairwoman' Amanda, so you two could figure what could be done. I think a joint booth with Indigo would be an awesome idea. I do believe they will be present at OtakuThon, but I just heard talk in the con forums, Amanda would know for sure.

Well I know last year AWA had 7,500 people. :( SO I guess they fall short. But, they invited you. :p So go, JChen. I hope you guys do decide to make TP more accessible for us, I've lived in a lot of states and like I said if you can hop in your car and drive getting to any conventions you do go to aren't that far away...until FL.
AWA has a dedicated fan base and such but... just not that 10,000 mark I suppose. Either way, they want you, we want you, and smaller places would appreciate you coming out just as much if not more compared to bigger conventions. So, I wish you luck in trying to get to smaller shows...altho ^^ 7,500 isn't so small to me. :p

Tokyopop was down here in Texas in January for UshiCon, that's how I got to meet Rivkah (she's the awsomes, by the way). I believe a tokyopop rep is also coming to A-kon in Dallas this year, so they do come down to the South.

Dragon*Con is huge they had like 60,000 atendants last year. It's supposedly the worlds largest Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention.

Edit: Sorry about the double post.

I posted a thread (http://messageboard.tokyopop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1357) in the Editors forum, as I wasn't sure where to put it- but it seems to (somehow?) fit with this one, so I thought I'd mention it in hopes of getting some sort of reply.
In short, it's basically me wondering if you still visit art schools, and if so, which?

Thanks!

That's good to know! It would be crazy if they didn't go to TX or FL I thought. :) Thx for the info.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't go to Atlanta, TokyoPop. ^_~

@Elae,

I'm don't have the full art school schedule because our editors do get invited to many schools without my knowledge but I'll double check with them to see if I can get a list of which schools they will be going to and push them to update the manga online schedule. I'll post something here too when I find out more info.

I do want to go to AWA. I'm pushing to see if we can send an editor and/or myself. I'll let you guys know first thing when we've made a decision

it'd be great if you could come to Fl for a few cons. The biggest I know here are metrocon, megacon, and j-con. there's also yasumicon but that's never been too big... not that I'm complaining

I'm currently looking foward to the TokyoPop hosted Manga Night in the Sunderland branch of Ottakar's. :) And that of course is going to be much smaller than a con, but I expect it will be fun!

I can say on Jchen's behalf that the UK has a few Tokypop sightings ahead this year!

The bristol Comic Expo (www.comicexpo.net)
and London MCM Expo (www.londonexpo.com)

will both feature the UK and Ireland rsom winners and Tokyopop will be on hand to launch the next competition!

There are also several smaller TP workshops (like the one Gracielizzy mentioned) happening around the country, so keep your eyes peeled Ire/UKers.

Any TP UK staff - feel free to edit my post if I'm off on anything. ^_~
