How do I get soft hair like the Japanese?
I have hair that is horribly coarse like most Korean guys do.
Conditioners do not seem to help that much.
Do any of you guys have any suggestions?

I never thought Japanese had particularly soft hair... (fiance's hair is coarse.)

you must be thinking of thin hair?
i have really thick hair too. i think you can get a hair cut that makes it seem like you have thinner hair, though ... i'm not sure about making it permanently thin...

My brother's hair is soft-ish (We're thai) But he also takes unusually good care of his hair for a guy... Shampoo, condition, blowdry, goop-stuff and hair spray is his daily routine. And he uses hair treatment once every 2 weeks.

Interesting idea. I'll try it when I go back home...
Or maybe I was missing the blow dry thing.
What's hair treatment?

I used to have dry coarse korean hair(gopsu mori). but two ways I got around it were thermal reconditioning(aka "magic perm", and go to your korean salon cos it's cheaper) which turned out to be too expensive, so then I switched to a ridiculously overpriced French shampoo/conditioner, and a pomade from Japan. But it's not really being Japanese that's gives the soft hair. It's DNA. There are plenty of Koreans blessed with the soft hair as well.

I used to get thermal reconditioning for years. I LOVE it but you have to know a: you probably won't be able to dye your hair after using it, and b: it will mess up your current hair color, and c: it SEVERELY damages your hair and you need to deep condition it all the time.

I should really ask magic perm but I was too embarassed... I thought that stuff was just for chicks.
But every Japanese I've met seems to have nice, soft hair. And really shiny hair. But then again, they've all been really nicely dressed too, so maybe they just pay more attention to their appearance.

I lived in Japan for 2 years, and while there are some people with great hair, there are still people with over-permed, over-dyed, super-frizzy hair, or with really coarse hair. This is my experience though.
In fact, I have really curly hair, and my friend and I went to get our hair cut, and I was listening to the hairdressers chat amongst themselves, and they were like: "I love the texture of white-people's hair, it's so much better feeling and finer than Japanese hair," and I thought

oh be careful! If it's the scissors that has a comb edge used for thinning, that's actually BAD for your hair. I used to get that also, and actually it causes split ends and makes your hair frizzier.
Unless you get blade carving, which while it works for some types of hair, can be disastrous for others. I can only be cut with very sharp scissors.

Yes, forgot to mention that. You can't dye your hair because the process seals up the pores in your hair, so dye can't attach to it. It also becomes a bit more difficult to style since it just wants to stay straight. The chemicals and heat used will warp and alter your hair color if you have any dyes. It really shouldn't have damaged your hair tho. Since it seals up your hair pores, it actually keeps your hair from drying out. HOWEVER, this must be done in a reputable salon or else you can have a hair disaster. Meaning the hair dresser has to know what they are doing, and they can NOT use inferior chemicals on your hair. Since the process was developed in Asia, it is cheaper and better to get this done in an Asian salon. I recommend either Korean or Japanese since they seem to do the best jobs.

My friend has really smooth, soft, silky hair. It's really shiny, straight and always falls into place...so I had to ask...
She gets a "Japanese Hair Straightening". It lasts 6 months she said. It's pretty expensive, but her hair looks like those Pantene commercials! Seriously! She dyes her hair different colors (the kind you have to bleach your hair first and then put the colors in), but it's so nice and soft :)
I want to get it done, but I spend too much money and can't seem to save enough to get it done :(
BTW, her hair is naturally straight. The straightening just makes it soft, shiny and not frizzy in her case. If you have curly hair it'll straighten it.

Totally worth it, honestly. My hair looked SO great when I had this done. I am just waiting until after my wedding in July to do it again (I want my hair to be more versatile and stylable for the wedding, and I don't want to have to deal with color issues, etc.) I have never met anyone who's had it that it didn't work for. My impression, speaking to the hairdresser who did mine numerous times, is that the only hair it doesn't work on is African hair.

Does that mean that "Thermal Reconditioning" thing you mentioned earlier and the "Japanese Hair Straightening" thing my friend mentioned is the same thing? Or are they different things?
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding :)

And yes, Japanese Straight Perm is the same thing as Thermal Reconditioning. Japanese also call it Repair sometimes.

Is that the same as getting your hair permenatly straightened(it lasts 6 months but is called permenant) 'cause my friend got that done once except it was here in the US and not (i dont think) in an Asian salon.
Congrats on the wedding! Get a nice diamond?;)

Thanks for answering my Q :) From my friend's hair, I was under the assumption that it didn't damage your hair because hers felt so nice! I'll have to rethink this.
Deep Conditioning or eternally frizzy hair? Ugh. I'm so lazy the latter seems easier to deal with :P

Congrats on your wedding-
I use this product everyday and it makes your hair soo soft and shiny. I have really think hair but its not corse so I don't know how it would work on your hair. Its by BioSilk in a clearish white bottle with black writing on it, I can get the name for you tomarrow if you're intrested. You can put it on wet hair or dry, and it smells really good (a smell for both women and men) I know you can buy it a targets now for the small bottle its like 12 dollars. But otherwize its a salon product.
Hope that helps. :)

Woo, tanzinite is SO pretty, I like just saying the word, it sounds so snobbish. lol.
This is just a curiousity questions. But after you get your hair relaxed so many times will it sorta train itself to be straighter over time?

Not at ALL, unfortunately. I straightened mine for 5-6 years. Stopped, and my hair is as curly as ever now.

Yeah, congrats on your wedding! those sound like really cool rings! I have naturally straight hair, so much that people ask if i use a straightener in the morning! o.O It's dirty blonde so everyone asks if i dyed it! o.O And it's so soft that my dude cousin and my friends and random people off the street pet it! o.O i have insane hair, i'm so lucky for my DNA besides one thing: this comes from my dad so curse whoever gave him these genes and passed them onto me! My hair has major uberoily problem, with dandruff at the same time! oh the humiliation! it's so weird! lots of people envy my figure too, it's really creepy. -_-

That's the main thing I hear people with STRAIGHT hair say: that they have dandruff or more commonly, oily problem.
You should try that Neutrogena oily scalp shampoo. I hear it works REALLY well.

Yeah, I got some stuff. Most of the time I use oily hair shamppo and conditioner, but if my dandruff comes I use dandruff shampoo. Of course, it's really insane because my dad's Native Canadian. I hate how people in Canada are called "Native Americans" because of that. I'm not American! I got blonde hair from my European side, my Mom's. My aunt has blonde hair, and we have no idea where it comes from because my Papa's Canadian and my Grandma's Hungarian. Relax, they're only like 51, and seperated.

Same here. People enjoy touching my hair and giving me pats on the head because I'm at a convienent height to do so. *is shorter than the average person*
I don't do anything either, because I'm too lazy. I shampoo, rinse, squeeze whatever water I can out of my hair, and sleep. I don't blowdry my hair or use any goopy stuff in the mornings or something. Heh, I don't even comb my hair some days. *watches everyone back away* ...Yeah, but somehow it still sorts itself out to where I can run my fingers through it and they'll only hit a few snags. I'm getting a dandruff problem from all the thick hair I have though, and the oil on my hair is bad, because I get oil streaks on my glasses from my hair hitting my glasses during the day. I might have to find another shampoo too...
*jumps on the late bandwagon* Congrats on getting married linlinchan!! Hope it was fun, or is fun, or will be fun, or whatever ^^

I'm Vietnamese, but people keep touching my hair(which I absolutely HATE!) saying "Your hair...I LOVE IT! *tug tug*" Maybe it is just the kind of shampoo/conditioner you are using. Blow drying your hair and straightening it isn't good for your hair, I usually towel dry my hair a little bit and then let the rest dry on its own. On special occasions I use a blow dryer or a straightener..Or in the winter when I don't want to get sick(even though I try to so I can skip school).

not really sure different chemicals affect differnt hair types. my hair is soft like a new born baby, so i only have trouble putting it in differnt styles due to its curleyness. but be careful what use...get something too strong and your hair will probably fall out.
p.s. long jet black hair with big loose curls is the best:D .........that's what i have.

^-^'' I do similar stuff too, as far as not always brushing.........
Mostly, I go through the same basic routine everytime I shower since I have fine, but damaged hair (from dying it every 4-5 wks for 6 years), that is also wavy.
Since my hair's damaged (even though I've not dyed it in 6 months), my system is rather complex..... Here goes~!!
1st, Condition hair (opitional!)
2nd, shampoo with Tea Tree Oil shampoo (for cleanliness)
3rd, condition lightly with a repairing conditioner
4th, shampoo lightly again
5th, deep condition with an intense moisturizing conditioner for, rinse out
6th, ring out hair, not towel dry (towel drying adds frizz!!)
7th, put in a leave-in conditioner (like Infusium 23 for instance)
8th, add gels (opitional, but useful)
9th, blowdry part way (I use an Ionic one for added shine)
10th, brush out knots gently
11th, finish blowdrying
12th, put whatever finishing touches for style!
............
Yeh~~~~ I warned you, "complex!" ._.''
But, my hair is very touchable! ^o~
My friends have this thing about braiding my hair...... o_o''' And then, calling me "Kitty" or "kitty hair"......... *scared/worried/flattered*
Also, I only wash my hair every 2 days since it's damaged.
The stylists I've seen at salons have said it's better for spreading the natural oils so the hair doesn't get too dry with frequent washing. ^-^
Additionally, Congrats on your marriage next month, Linlinchan!! ^o^

I have a similar system of complex showering :p
my hair is naturally thick, but its an odd kind of thick >.< the underneath layers are frizzy curly and the upper layers are frizzy straight, so its not a good combination >.< i'm forced to blowdry it every time i wash it and straighten it, i know it damages the hair but from what i heard not so much as people think it would (says my hairstylist) now since i've been dying it red and got it layered its much nicer and silky, and its easier to maintain ^^ and i also wash my hair every two days ^^ i shower every night mind you though. My stylist says also says to maintain the every two day hair wash to keep my hair from being destroyed, then agian the bleaching i have planned out probiably wont help much. I'm dying it a mixture of lime green, purple, and corinthian blue. The lime green will be a underlayer (my hairs going to remain red :p ) with a big chunk of purple off to the side (like Meguru from Panic channel) and a streak of the blue in the front ^^ i like what i have planned out hehe ^^ I love color and i've been wanting to get vivid colors in my hair for a long time so i'm really excited about it!

Boy, I'll say that's complex, alright. How long would that take to do?
I just shampoo, rinse, towel dry, and sometimes blow dry if I feel like it. Then again, taking care of my hair in 12 not so easy steps would probably take me longer than the average person, considering my hair goes down past my waist.

I agree with you if yo hate it when people touch your hair. It so annoying. Anyway, I can't really tell want kind of shampoo should be use cause each person have different kind of hair and their hair react to it differently. Like mine, it get fuffy everytime I wash it, but wait one day, wash it again with just plain water, and it not puffy anymore, and it soften. I guess try and try to see what fit you, I guess.Try Sunsilk none the less. :p
