View Full Version : Lamenting Asian Music

Does anyone else find Asian music to be very sad?
It's disgusting how Asian pop artists keep stealing beats from America and then mix it up, trying to disguise their lack of imagination.
First of all, American music has been hijacked by their own American corporations, so why would the Asians steal a broken product?
Second of all, there's plenty of traditional roots the Asian artists could use to draw upon for inspiration. It's sad to see Western hegemony make Asian heritage a forgotten, dusty relic.

I'm sorry. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. You're accusing America of making Asian musicians into dirty thieves?
Not that I support either of these views, but it's interesting that you managed to put the blame on both groups at once.

There are many western artists who take music from asian artists too. Then again in this age, it's hard to find anything very original.

I hate it when a friend says "wow, they really sound like such and such (and list an american band)." Because then I have to tell them that the JP band they are listening to was actually formed 5 years before the first member of the US band was even born...Sad, really.

This is happening with greater frequency now. There are bands such as 'Rin who have added traditional Japanese instrumentation to rock/pop music, Hajime Chitose, who has drawn upon traditional Okinawan singing techniques and mainland Asian music to inspire her. There are shamisen virtuosos like the Yoshida Brothers and Agatsuma who use elements of Tsugaru-jamisen, an art they both have formal training in, to play something more pop-audience friendly.
Not to mention that the 12 Girls Band, a group of girls playing traditional instruments in an exciting way have been breaking through to both Japanese (and Western) audiences.

What's wrong with people having international music?
Not all American music is "bad" and the same goes for Asian music.

Because it's not "international", it's American.
It's like America planting democracies all over the world but disapproving when one of their democratic colonies make a choice they don't like.
Certainly not all American music is "bad", but the good comes out at much lesser frequencies than before the corporate tentacles latched on. Not to mention, the CEOs choose which songs will be advertised, and thus popular, so Michael Buble remains still relatively unknown.

Are not, it's a good example of American pollution in Asian music.

Aaack. That brings back far too many Anime Expo memories. And the Miggedy-miggedy-miggedy Mack Daddy and the Diggidy-diggidy-diggidy Daddy Mack.
Sometimes running a song to a smilar beat as another can work damn well, other times...you get Vanilla Ice.
